how about this two-notch downgrade of cummins from buy to sell from bank of america merrill? here's the different story. remember cummins is a big international oriented industrial with a stock that's being killed for the last year and a half. 18 months! yet this analyst at bank of america and merrill had a buy rating on the stock since this past january when it was trading at 142. let me see, where'd this one go out? oh, yeah, 85. that's bad. and then nearly 11 months later he downgrades to underperform. the stock but i have to wonder what the heck took them so long? maybe it's a case of, what, better late than never? i can't disagree with the substance of this downgrade as this is a very difficult time to own a fantastic american manufacturer like cummins. sooner than anticipated -- >> continues to make it difficult for them to compete with foreign engine makers and a country with devalued currencies, which have virtually every other country in the globe right now, though particularly they're worried about china. plus cummins makes equipment that goes into the minerals and

bank of america merrill lynch out with its 2016 forecast. it sees the u.s. growing 2.5%, monetary policy taking center stage. joining us now is head of u.s. economics at banc of america merrill lynch. joe: thank you for joining us. what is your take? we've seen a few strong job reports in a row, can we continue that? >> in terms of job growth, it might be hard to see a pace of 200,000 continued, because we are running against labor constraints. the pretense of remains at lower levels. the participation rates remains at a low level. were looking at about 150,000-160,000 on average. growth, a mid-2% economy. joe: one of the most crucial questions is the pace of wage growth. that -- the blue line is the small business survey, a percentage of companies planning to raise wages, surging to the highest level since the financial crisis. the green line is the employment index, pulled back a little bit, one survey nicely leads the eci. higher wages, do you buy it? >> i do buy the argument that conditions are being met for wages to pick up if you look at the low level

brian: merrill lynch was different. they had a tremendous capability. $20issue was the came with billion in less cap and it caused delusion. from a shareholders basis, we had fewer shares. we are still working through that. charlie rose: you still believe in the idea of the universal bank? brian: absolutely, because that is what the customers demand of us. if you go to a middle-market client in charlotte or san francisco or new york, the business is globalized. they have factories around the world. they are buying resources around the world. if you think about that client, they have to have a bank that can help them figure that out. our business of corporate investment banking or middle-market banking is a absolutely global business. it involves trading capabilities to help them hedge and ultimately global capabilities. that models what they want. billions of dollars of extra revenue for us to have these after pieces together. that does not mean it will be the biggest trading company in the world. we try to keep that in
