this holiday, police patrols and closed streets around lake merritt this 4th of july. yes, we want safety, but it doesn't have to be clamped down and closed. the extra security presence comes as opd expects large crowds to visit the lake over the holiday. it's also in response to the mass shooting that took place by the lake on june 19th. that shooting happened near don buckner's paid parking lot on grand avenue. he's in favor of the security measures, but feels the city should have partnered with businesses to create a safe event. i understand the purpose. safety. that's the most important thing, but also business. i have to make sure business still flows because we're still have to pay bills. opd hopes the street closures will limit sideshow activity, illegal fireworks and help keep everyone safe. but with no planned events at the lake, some question if people will come to the area at all to enjoy the holiday. i definitely think sometimes, like with the cars, it can be dangerous just because of the amount of people that are on the lake. but at the same time, i would

over in oakland police preemptively shut down portions of the road around lake merritt, preparing for what is expected to be a large crowd thursday night. >> i just chill, hang out, just enjoying the breeze of lake merritt. >> reporter: one woman we spoke with told us she came up here from san jose to escape the heat. her family plans to just watch the fireworks show from their rooftop, but she's still concerned about others being reckless. >> it's scary and i grew up in oroville where there's a thomas fire. my brother still lives up there. i've been trying to get ahold of the senior center where he lives and nobody's answering, so i'm a little concerned because every time it seems like they get hit a lot. >> reporter: the city of oakland says it's working with other cities and the county to crack down on illegal fireworks so everyone can have a fun but safe holiday. as i said, guys, this isn't the first year they've closed off these roads up here on grizzly peak. they've done this the last few years and say it has really helped. they haven't seen any issues up here during the fourth

but we did have service restored at fruitvale and lake merritt just before ten this morning, and then at 19th street and 12th street stations, right about 1030 this morning. so we do have trains running through all of our stations now. all lines are back up and running except the red line, which runs from richmond to millbrae. we think just out of an abundance of caution, it's better to not have that service while we continue to recover from our service disruption. we weren't sure we were going to make it. nancy lombardo and her group said they were impacted by the station closures this morning, while trying to get into san francisco for a5k race. they told us that the power was out in oakland and we could catch a free shuttle to the station, but there were so many people trying to get on that we just called lyft and there was no traffic on the freeway. we made it into the city with like zero minutes to spare. riders heard announcements overhead in stations today that the red line remains out of service. no word yet on when it will reopen in san francisco. christie smith, nbc bay area

police were called to sixth avenue near east 15th street that's not far from lake merritt.fficers say they saw a group of people near a car. then immediately left once they saw the police arrive. police investigated that area and that is where they found more than 500 pounds of illegal fireworks, all in plain view. officers towed and impounded the vehicle for the unlawful possession of dangerous fireworks. the confiscated fireworks have been turned over to the oakland fire department for proper disposal. well, san jose officials are reminding people about the dangers of fireworks, telling them to leave it to the professionals. san jose mayor matt mehan and the san jose fire chief were at lake cunningham park, where one of two fireworks shows will take place on the fourth. the other will be at almaden lake park, which is the site of the ninth annual 4th of july fireworks festival. the mayor says the fireworks displays will be a good alternative to dangerous, illegal fireworks. >> just between june and july last year, our fire department had to respond to 86 fireworks related

over here in the oakland area, police preemptively shut down portions of the road around lake merritt because they are preparing for what is expected to be a huge crowd down there tonight. one woman told us she came here from san jose to try and escape the heat. her family plans to just watch the fireworks show from their rooftop, but she is still concerned about others being reckless. >> it's scary and i grew up in oroville where there's the thomas fire. my brother still lives up there. i've been trying to get ahold of the senior center where he lives and nobody's answering, so i'm a little concerned, yeah, because every time there's fire it seems like they get hit a lot. >> reporter: the city of oakland is working with the city of berkeley here as well as the county and several other surrounding cities to try and make sure everyone has fun this holiday, but also stays safe. if you are in this area trying to get up to grizzly peak, it's not going to happen tonight. this road is going to be closed all night into tomorrow morning. if you just have to get around, you aren't trying to co

the area is no stranger to these types of incidents, with a menorah being vandalized at nearby lake merrittk in december. it just shows that anti-semitism became somewhat the norm. people feel like they can get away with this. in january of this year, the anti-defamation league reported a 360% increase in anti-semitic incidents in the three months following the october 7th attacks on israel. local jewish community leaders say the incidents in oakland represent the safety concerns the jewish community faces on a daily basis. i think the fact that this is a repeat attack on a synagogue, i think shows pretty clearly that there is a religiously motivated hate component here. the synagogue is asking for donations to help with the window damages, which could cost around $10,000. lebkowsky says. in this moment of darkness, he's trying to spread the light. he's keeping the chunks of concrete thrown at the synagogue windows, and we'll use them in a positive way, and we're going to use them in the future construction project to build with it. so we're going to try to transform that darkness into ligh

henry now, one of the victims in the june 10th mass shooting at oakland's lake merritt is now accusedmen. that night, 23 year old jordan kelly faces four counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. police say he was one of four people who took part in a shootout with another group on the north side of the lake. kelly was shot multiple times and was listed in critical condition at the hospital. there is no update on his condition tonight. in all, 14 people were shot on juneteenth. these are the first charges to be filed in the investigation. oakland police are looking for a driver who fled after a fiery crash last week. that security footage shared with ktvu by a neighbor, it shows the car flying into the intersection at 41st avenue and carrington street, just after midnight on june 28th. the driver hit a street median and went airborne. then the car caught fire. as you can see, pretty dramatic. oakland police say when they arrived, the driver was gone. several parked cars were damaged. anyone with information or video is asked to contact opd. now. you think it's hot here? well, th
