mesquite police briefed reporters about the investigation.nn was there for the briefing and joining me now, what's the latest there? >> well the police here tell us the mesquite police department telling us that the search warrant has been executed, that he are very slowly and methodically going through this house. when they initially approached this house, kate, in the early morning hours, there was concern what they might find given the amount of carnage and violence in vegas. what they did was evacuated the immediate neighbors around the house. they used a robot to gain entry. but then what they found was a very normal ordinary house. and it has simply added to the confusion by the police department. here's what we heard from the public information officer, the mesquite police department. >> what's unique for us is that the gunman, the shooter, and the person with him, we, the mesquite police department, have not had any contacts with these people in the past. we haven't had any traffic stops, any law enforcement contacts, no arrests or no

that's marilou danley who lived in mesquite, nevada. they began to look into his past. that search is still under way. his home in mesquite, nevada, they put an all-points bulletin out for the cars that were registered to him. they've found them. you heard the sheriff say they believe they have located marilou danley. we don't know if that means she is in ducustody. they're eager to talk to her. they don't know what her role in this was. several law enforcement officials told us when they got in the hotel room, they found what they describe as a cache of weapons. he had several weapons with him. we're trying to figure out what kind of weapons those are. obviously, you listen to the video, to the sound of the gunfi gunfire, those are automatic shots being fired. you hold the trigger down on the rifle and it continues to fire shots at a rapid velocity. weapons like that are illegal to possess, unless they're registered with atf. you can't go out and buy them. they're common in the military. one big question here, how did this 64-year-old man, get his hand on automatic wea

stephen paddock the shooter, 64 years old from mesquite, nevada. police are looking for his roommate, a 62-year-old woman named marilou danley. here is the picture of her now. they have not been able to locate her since. there were some reports earlier that she was seen in that hotel. we believe that was a report that came from an eyewitness after police perhaps circulated with her picture and was seen here with an older gentleman as well. we presume that older gentleman was mr. paddock. mr. paddock is dead but -- and there's a search, we should mention, going on at his residence in mesquite, nevada, right now. >> authorities are on the lookout for two cars, two vehicles that were associated with him. a hyundai and a chrysler pacifica touring vehicle. so they're looking for that. this is an active investigation and the big question looms this morning, why? why would a gunman open fire on people enjoying a concert on we'll continue our coverage here. you've been watching an nbc news special report. much more as we continue in just a moment. >> annou

he lives in mesquite, nevada, 80 miles from las vegas. his brother telling reporters this morning that this comes as a complete shock. the gunman erupted at 10:08 p.m. las vegas time. the shooter opening fire an automatic weapon who his 32nd floor hotel room at the mandalay bay resort. he targeted the crowd across the street on the final night of a three-day country music festival. witnesses say the shooting continued for five to ten minutes before police burst into his hotel room. police say the shooter died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. here's what it sounded like as it unfolded. we want to warn everyone, you may find this disturbing. police are investigating the shooter, identified as stephen craig paddock of mesquite, nevada. police believe he killed himself before police entered his room. according to the associated press, officials are saying paddock had two devices which could have converted semiautomatic weapons to fully automatic ones. he was able to unleash hundreds of rounds of gunfire from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel. he shot gun shops confirmed they sold guns to paddock. the gun shops say their sales were legal, and at least one of those stores claiming paddock passed an fbi background check. one shop owner in utah said paddock bought a shotgun from him. >> it was just a normal timing for him to come in. he was talking how he was new to the area. kind of visiting all the firearms stores in the area. found something on our shelves that he really liked, and it took him a couple of different trips, i guess you could say, before he ended up purchasing. >> the investigation continues. we learned more about the gunman's past. newly obtained security footage shows paddock sitting in a green

one of them lives in mesquite, nevada. we know that is the suspect. there was a second person with the same name and birth date who also lived in another state with the last name and town as mesquite. i can't say with confidence that we know what his work history is. >> i do want to point that out. because earlier in the broadcast i received messages of people on twitter demanding to see the shooter, to know more, saying why are you hiding this? it is so important, when you think about the work our colleagues like pete williams are doing to get all of this information correct. because the police, law enforcement, need to be protected and don't want missing information out there. but the 400 people currently being treated in hospitals. and, or, the 50 who have already died. n they servecy receive the information they know out there. do we know anything else about the shooter's past? i know it is a carry state. >> reporter: no. we don't know when he acquired the rifles. we don't know if he shot at gun ranges or what his interest in firearms, whether he

lived in mesquite, nevada, where a search is going on now of his house. this woman, marilou danley, was his roommate there and some eyewitnesses have said they saw the two of them together at the hotel. but now there's a lot of work going on. it's pretty hard to travel anywhere in america without leaving a record. you buy gas, if you use a credit card at the gas station, if you check into the hotel, if you buy something on the road with your credit card. that's going to leave a record. so one of the tasks of the federal authorities helping the police here will be to build a backwards time line to try to figure out when did he check into the hotel, did he rent the room? did she rent the room? did someone else rent the room? those are all important questions. and i say rent the room, i mean reserve the room, book the room. when did he get there, when did he buy the weapons, those are all questions to be answered. no indication of the motive. no indication of terrorism, but they simply don't know why this happened. why did this man choose to shoot anybody mu
