. >> can can is a research meterologist at the scrips institute of oceanographer at,uc san diego and researcher at is tusds and serve at the climate research division director. his work is understanding climate variability and changes particularly as they apply to the pacific ocean and north america. his specific work concerns impacts of climate changes on water resources and other sectors in west europe north america and he also worked on large scale exchange of heat and water between the ocean and the atmosphere. dan is also a director of the california climate change center a center that works to improve and forecast for decision makers in the california region and i'm sure it's information we can take throughout the united states. dan recieved a bachelor of science in meterologist and oceanographer and received in 1971 from university that makes us about the same age dan, but i'm just a broken down lawyer and economists. he received a, ph.d., in ee in san diego. his speech today will focus on climate change and it's challenge to our water supply. please welcome doctor dan cohan.

meterologist lawrence karnow tells us when things will start to warm up, we hope might see a little sunshine. lawrence? >> i think folks will be looking forward to that after all the rain. boy, this is some kind of storm right now. earlier this morning we were talking about the wall of green. now it's yellow and orange showing up around much of the bay area as some heavier amounts of rainfall falling from vacaville, fairfield, concord t danville. a strong line in petaluma and towards santa rosa. now, we have seen thunderstorms embedded in some of these cells so you can bet we're see heavy downpours, probably hail showing up in sports. also heavy rain in walnut creek, danville, pleasanton. some strong weather around the bay area and strong gusty winds continuing even toward the peninsula. another radar shows what's happening in the south bay. they are also being pounded by some heavy amounts of rainfall. check that system out. just south of half moon bay, this is part of a squall line that was pushing through. this is part of a system that produced some of the like strikes outside so we're wa

we have meterologist lawrence karnow who joins us. lawrence, we have been seeing all morning and now into the afternoon, we have only seen damage along certain parts of the california coast. >> yeah. >> an interesting pattern. >> yeah, that's true. as a matter of fact, it's marched to believe that this earthquake originated so far away in japan last night. and then just soared across the pacific going about 500 to 600 miles per hour, if you can believe that. and the focal point ended up being right in the santa cruz area. that's what we have seen so far at least in the bay area and the warnings continuing outside. we are not done just yet. remember, there are a lot of aftershocks, some of those aftershocks 7.0 and yeah, they are big-time quakes. so yeah, they generated some big-time swells out there. check out this whirlpool that we had earlier on when we had a surge coming onshore. it brought with it a lot of that water two to three feet in height moving onshore but this is not your typical wave. this is not just a wave lapping at th
