a car has crashed into the metlife office building on research boulevard. that is in rockville. montgomery county police tell us the driver is still trapped in that vehicle. we don't know if anyone inside the building was hurt. we're going to keep an eye on this and bring you more information as soon as it becomes available. jan. >>> legs lee, escalator failures were driving metro riders crazy this morning. investigative reporter went to the station and is calling to get some answers. how much does this escalator cost? >> this has only been open since winter, really, and did came in at a cost of $12 million. so this is a very expensive system. it hasn't even been operational a year now and as they are trying to use that equipment, they are experiencing problems. one rider said it's a problem that keeps on happening and this morning as passengers were on that dupont escalator, it lurched to a spark, sparking screaming, fear, and anger. >> within about an hour of the outage, technicians had two of the three escalators at the south dupont metro station working. one was not. metro s

he sold assets, tens of billions of dollars of assets, aia for example, aleco, metlife in a buyers market. a situationket is in which you don't want to be a seller and yet he magnificently managed to wring the most value possible out of these assets. he not only stabilize the shipments of up to the government that left aig arguably in better shape than it was when hank greenberg ran it into thousand six. if you think about it, it's a smaller company. it has about half the assets it did when greenberg was running and at the peak of profitability. it is still large but it generates a better return on assets today than it did back then. that is remarkable. it is arguably a better company. >> it is remarkable and it's interesting. you mentioned the sale of the assets. he took overhat aig, there was basically talk about a fire sale of their assets and he said what was key at the time was aia and that public offering of the company. he knew that would be a benchmark as to what the assets of aig are really worth and they would not be having a fire sale. thee would not limited to vultures or shar

that group of investors that included blackrock and metlife $8.5 wl.y recently for about $650 million which looks cheap compared to the rest. and also, as part of a group settlement of $25 billion. that's not just them that's other banks, as well. they still have investigations ongoing. i mean the justice department, state attorneys general and others are still looking into whether they misled investors. >> how much more money could they have to outlay? >> obviously they're hoping this is the end of the road or close to it. they have resolved a lot of these. if you look at their filings i think they say % of the claims have been resolved. >> is it the number of claims or the potential damage? >> the dollar value. >> that's what i don't know. that's still a good question mark. i do think they resolved a lot. >> why wasn't it compelling for the doj that a lot of this happened at countrywide before they bought them? >> it wasn't compelling to the doj when you made the argument about bear stearns and womamu. that's not reducing the settlement fines. if you
