wmata is not just the metro that serves the washington area. it is truly america's metro system. it's the second largest system in the nation, behind only new york city, it's 117 miles long, it has 91 stations and includes more than 12,000 employees. it's critical to the function og they have federal government because it moves more than 40% of the federal work force every day. to and from work. and also during the day for various missions that people go on during the normal work day. it is essential to national security. if we didn't have the metro system what is already one of the most traffic plagued and congested regions in the country would be absolutely paralyzed. it's also the mechanism that moves millions of americans who come from all over the united states. all of our constituent here's in congress, to visit us. and that's how people get to the white house and the capitol and to go to the pentagon and to go see n.i.h. and to visit the museums and the battlefields and so on. so the metro is critical, not just for the people who hi and work here every day and make the fed

metro is officially open now with the new service hour, 8:00 a.m.ns we started to see shuttle busses arrive here at grovesner to take passengers to friendship heights. starting this week and next three, metro will shutdown a five mile stretch of the red line in both directions affecting four stations and replacing train service with bus service. so no trains are going to be running in between grovesnor and friendship heights. you'll see signs posted to let passengers know they take the free shuttle bus service instead. so the only way to get to the stops bethesda and mel center is to take the shuttle bus the next three weekends. this is test a new waterproofing technique inside the underground tunnels. this will hopefully reduce the amount water that seeps in and affects service sometimes, crews will be drilling holes in the tunnels to test a new kind of grout and they say it can only be done when trains are not running. metro is warning riders these changes may cause delays over the next few weekends and they're asking passengers to allow at least
