mexican navy choppers helped transport the men back to the tonight of san felipe. survivors like the police chief of contra costa county community college say they were asleep when the storm struck the ship sank quickly a coast guard helicopter is on the way from san diego as american officials have been asked to help with rescue and recovery. >> sending our helicopter down there, we have four sets of eyes in the sky, hopefully locate some of these missing people. >> mother nature is helping winds have calmed and waves have slunk. water -- shrunk water temperature is warm if some of the missing are still alive they have a chance. >> a lot of different factors go into survivability, age of the person, male or female, whether or not they have life jackets on, if they have access to any other survival gear and if they are able to float on anything in the water or get themselves up out of the water. >> all right so the mexican government is now calling this a recovery mission, as opposed to a rescue mission because they say they were not able to spot any more people in

the mexican navy and u.s. coast guard are now expanding their search because of strong southerly currents in the sea of cortez and 115 ft. boat sank right here near the islands, you can see the little islands right there that is where the boat capsized on sunday about 2 mi. from the coast. some survivors were able to swim to the islands, but others had been rescued south of here and also the search is now expanded to the east because they think that some people may have drifted that way. five teams will head down to the bottom of the sea about 200 ft. down by the end of this week but that will be a recovery mission not a rescue mission. for now, mexican officials say that the boat is down there but they are not worried about that. they have all their resources trying to find the seven missing men alive. live in the studio tonight i am grant lotus with kron4 news. >> the family of donna lee, the missing fishermen from san ramon the ec and the pictor said that they just got word that they have been successful in

the mexican navy's policy is to stop looking for survivors after 96 hours., we spoke with two bay area wives supporting each other and pushing for more resources. nbc bay area kris sanchez has new details. >> reporter: family and friends who should be gathering around the dinner table for fresh fish and tall tales are searching the internet to keep the search for missing relatives ally. >> today is a critical day for us. it's been 70 hours. the mexican navy has indicated to us they will conduct searches up to 96 hours. >> reporter: but in the last hour, the mexican navy confirmed they will continue the search for the time being. this is video of the trip the year before as lee's party prepared to leave on small boats to fish. when it capsized sunday morning, many survivors were rescued by local fishermen. now the families want the navy to reach out to the local fishermen again. >> think it's really important if they haven't done this yet, to really interview, work with, solicit information from the locals, coordinate it with them, look in areas that they may

the mexican navy is coordinating the search-and- rescue effort. it did ask for the coast guard to send this help. the c-130 has searched hundreds of square miles over the last few days. the mexican navy helped rescue dozens of survivors after the fishing boat named erik a single off baja california sunday morning. some of the survivors are back home in the bay area. they helped pressure mexican official to extend the search effort beyond the normal 96 hours. >> i was in the water for 16 hours. and i was okay. so given that it's maybe the third day, you know, there is still some hope. >> my staff and i have contacted the mexican consulate, and today they assured me that they will do everything that they can to continue the search for survivors. >> seven fishermen are still missing in the sea of cortez this morning. one has been confirmed dead. >>> a key firefighting tool may be grounded for good just in time for the fire season. you probably have seen those huge dc-10s on the news. cal fire cancelled it contract with the nation's largest air tanker

the mexican navy says there was no mayday call, for more than 12 hours no one was aware they were inrouble. the rescue operation began when a local fisherman spotted three survivors at sea. michael was one of two dozen americans on board. he and several companions managed to swim to safety clinging to a cooler. >> they had life jackets on and did have time to put on life jackets, so that's a good thing. he's a strong swimmer. i'm really glad. >> reporter: also among the rescued, american lee ikegami, on a fishing trip with his buddies. we reached his wife by telephone. >> somewhere around ten-ish my husband called and said that his boat was capsized, that he's fine. i was in shock. >> reporter: 27 americans were on board the 100-foot boat called the erik. mexican officials say at least one american is dead and at least six are among the missing. the boat left san felipe on saturday for a seven-day fishing trip but early sunday morning, about 60 miles south of san felipe, it hit what is called a freakish storm off the baja, california, peninsula. according to the navy two giant waves

four days after the ship sank, off of the coast the mexican navy promises not to give up on the search for bay area fishermen who are still missing. joseph's shows us videos just -- joe vazquez shows us videos just moments after a rescue at sea. >> reporter: as the search goes on in mexico's sea of cortez, many of the survivors have decided to stay in mexico to help, including michael ng of belmont, whose uncle don lee is still missing. >> i'm still hopeful, the rest of the people here. i was in the water for 16 hours. and i was okay. so given it's maybe the third day, there's still some hope. >> reporter: we are now getting our first look at video shot by the mexican navy showing the survivors moments after they were rescued. they were so exhausted, military members had to carry some of them to the helicopter to be evacuated. after a surprise storm sank their ship early sunday morning, they swam for miles in shark-infested waters to reach land. some were plucked from the water by nearby boaters. one mexican crew member now reports a group of men that stayed together was saved by 12 bo

coast guard and mexican navy searched for those survivors for more than 36 hours. >> there's a lot of different factors that go into survivability. the age of the person, male or female, whether or not they have life jackets on. >> reporter: those survivors they found are reported to be in good condition but some are certainly sunburned and dehydrated after having to spend 15-plus hours in the water before rescue. one of the survivors is rich sibatari from novato. and he had joined the trip at a last-minute addition and called his wife to tell her that he is safe. >> then he mentioned that he got awakened at about 2:30 and they all just had to jump off the boat and take what they -- life jackets on, and he indicated they had been in the water for about 15 hours. >> michael ng of belmont is another bay area survivor on the boat. he was one of the gentlemen who clung to an ice chest in the water and floated until he was rescued. and lee ikizami also survived. he was flipped right into the water as soon as the boat capsized. the mexican government has turned this into a recovery mission.

today the mexican navy and u.s. coast guard will continue to search. tara moriarty joins us from the newsroom to talk about what investigators are cig this morning. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, pam. we are learning more about the man confirmed dead in this boating tragedy. the coast guard says the fisherman's chances of survival are good given that the water temperature is warm but hope is fading. passengers that made it out tonight are not sure if people from the upper decks were able to grab life jackets. 35 crew members and passengers survived by swimming 16 hours to shore or being rescued by mexican fishermen or navy boats. u.s. coast guard left yesterday searching for the tourists. the boat capsized before dawn on sunday when it was hit by a sudden storm. one man as we mentioned has been found dead. we recently spoke to may lee the missing fisherman donald lee is clinging to hope that her husband will be found alive. >> just thinking about not being with him it's horrible. i have to hold on to that. i have to hold on that there i
