i'm martin simon the program director for workforce development at the mga center for best pract sis. as part of the economic human services -- i've got to bring this closer. okay. i'm going to use up all my time here just getting the mike set. i appreciate the opportunity to spend a couple minutes talking about a new project that we're just starting at the mga center that builds on the work richard described and certainly will complement the work under way in your states that governor hassan just described. we initiated a new proget driven by demand. and as part of this project we are going to be working with six states that will be looking at strategies for connecting young people 16 to 29 and connecting them with jobs, middle skill jobs in stem area. we'll have a competitive selection process participating states will receive up to a hundred thousand dollars grant to cover the extra costs of participating. we will issue the select -- selection process this fall for this project. on a parallel track we've been working with the u.s. department of labor on the american apprenticeship

mga has made great strides in recognizing the importance of strengthing the pipeline and identifying better ways to connect employers students and educator. insuring america has more skilled workers is extremely important. by starting at the high school level, it is key. we have learned and we have students who have the propensity to reach beyond our wildest dreams. and i am excited that the department of labor and the administration believes in this concept and has laurnnched the apprenticeship competition and the white house summit on america apprenticeships. class hopes to work with mga and department of labor to sport them -- support them to better prepare students for the twenty-first century careers. we want to help our nation take back its rightful place in leading the world in economic growth wealth creation and technological innovation. in some cases we may be preparing students for jobs that haven't been created yet. together bringing all parties to the table we will create a platform where policymakers secondary and post secondary school leaders practitioners and industry

had challenged the day of judge reside ruling, a temporary injunction declaring section 1020 of the mga institutional the day of the ruling they sent lawyers -- not just government attorneys but attorneys from security agencies -- into her chambers and demanded that she re-instate, lift the temporary injunction, renne state the law in the name of national security which to her credit she refused. the next week they win to the appeals court demanded the same thing and they did put it back into effect, the law back into effect and carl mayer who is here and bruce affron, the great lawyers on the case who did all the hard work. gist showed up in a coat and tie. we all wondered why, and i think our such signifies -- such signifies was they're already using the law in sights like bag baghdadram and other places. so the second circuit waited until the supreme court ruled and then the case was called hedges versus obama. he said the plaintiffs in hedges vs. obama, the plaintiffs in the supreme court chapper versus -- don't have stand organize credibility and therefore they don't have any hedge

i want to thank the mga for focusing on this. this is something we need to say focused on and continue to learn from each other because there are a lot of good things going on out here in the different states. and when we passed our legislation we pulled from a lot , of places. we did not try to reinvent the wheel. we wanted to make sure that we were trying to cover the waterfront. i cannot stress enough how it takes everybody, every stakeholder in this to make this work. it has to be a huge amount of stakeholders in this. let's give a round of applause to our presenters. of all the things that mga could have said the last year doing, i think governor h hickenlooper chose the right one. not because it is that estrogen or as someone said, it is not sexy. it is just the opposite. i have been very lucky in my career. i have actually had interesting jobs, but more, i have traveled your stay, talk to people in your organizations, and i always ask them the same question -- what is it about what you did in your career that makes you the most proud? everybody has an answer to this question. over and over, this one example has come up many times. it happened in our state, and i am sure in every other state, i know it has happened and at least two other states. you may recall the tragically many years ago, a bridge that span the mississippi river collapsed suddenly. hundreds of feet into running water. thankfully not more people were injured as a consequence, but if you went and asked our highway department about their achievement, it was that that bridge was open 13 months later. not 13 years. 13 months is an extraordinary achievement. i think delivery results
