that's causing long lines at various mgm properties.eople are also getting paid their winnings at the slot machines by hand, which is kind of old school. mgm and caesar's confirm being hit this week by cyberattacks. the fbi is on the case. it's likely both companies were hit by the same cyber criminal. so what do the hackers get a hold of, and what do they want? th case of caesar's, the data includes social security and driver's license numbers for customers who signed up for caesar's loyalty program. that's what the hackers got. we also know that caesar's had to pay out those hackers $15 million in ransom. so there's no guarantee also on top of this that the compromised data will not end up in the wrong hands. let's bring in our consumer investigator chris chmura. chris, this is interesting because a lot of people are impacted here just going to vegas for a quick weekend. >> it's not necessarily vegas because these casino operators operate casinos in other states. and the loyalty programs aren't separated by state. the group involved h

that's what the nine day outage at mgm is telling so many visitors. effects of a cyber attack that nearly paralyzed and took down its si systems. >>> you can still book a hotel room behind me and the other mgm properties but you literally have to call and it takes 20 plus minutes to get somebody on the phone or you have to use a third party site or app. the same with the spa and the same with other hotel and casino services. so in short, it's annoying. mgm has not paid the hackers the ransom that they are demanding and as a result, their systems are down and jeffrey's analysts estimate them not paying could cost them between 4.2 and $8.4 million per day. so in sum, this setback is costing them much more than the $15 million ransom that caesars paid their hackers to restore their systems. in the meantime, other hotels and casinos on the boardwalk are saying their lines are busy and a people are saying hey, can we still do business as usual if we stay with us. and the answer is yes. so the likes of bali's and resorts casinos are seeing a bump-up in busi

mgm said an investigation is ongoing.n as the company became aware of the attack, it, quote: took prompt action to protect our systems and data, including shutting down certain systems. now, some customers reported that they could not get into their hotel rooms with their digital keys. and there are reports that many of the high tech slot machines on casino floors were shut down as well as atm machines not working. now, the apparent cyberattack follows a string of similar hacks,including one against various u.s. government agencies in june that targeted the department of energy, among others. exploiting a software vulnerability. and an august attack on a healthcare company that operates 16 hospitals and 165 clinics in three states. including here in california. meantime, the property right now for mgm is getting control of its systems. once they have done that, they will be you are gently working to fix whatever vulnerability the attackers exploited, and to begin working out how much damage has been done, not just to the

mgm chose not to. mgm suffering more significant consequences as a result.mpanies and where does the government stand in terms of what it wants to see what happens when ransom is asked for? >> in the old days the fbi would advise you, don't pay a ransom. all you do is make a market for this and encourage guys to do it again and you give then cash they can use to buy better servers and equipment and conduct more cyberattacks. but they kind of backpedaled off of that over the past couple of years. the fbi sort of a little quieter on whether or not you should pay ransom. a lot of companies, it is material to their quarterly results. it is material to their operations. they are in a real bind. and law enforcement gets that, understands the pain they're in. and so now it's a little bit of a soft dance. they don't want companies to pay these ransoms, but they understand why they do, when they do. and that's the challenge here. i asked clorox about this if they paid any ransom or had any indication of who the hackers are, they said the investigation is ongoing and

talk about the nature of these hacks between caesars entertainment and mgm resorts.focuses on customers and the other on resort operations. at the end of the day, does it all come down to money? what's the objective of these hacks? >> for sure there's information on how they're responding. black hat is a ransomware group targeting casinos. we've seen them target other organizations in the past. in this case, they've been successful gaining access, and we've seen casinos hacked and filing. >> tell us how they're gaining access. i was reading about social engineering, basically hackers posing as an i.t. support employee? that's a little bit concerning. >> it is concerning. we do seism t. engineering as a very active path for access to a route especially this one. many of us have experienced this where you get a text, a phone call claiming to be part of an organization and asking you to divulge sensitive information. in this case, they only needed one particular victim within the organization and then began to expand their access. when you use cloud access, access becom
