so western miami-dade county just west of downtown miami. probably 15 miles due west. the sprawling campus there in the city. we don't know how many people have died. the florida highway patrol confirms multiple people are dead. there's records now including from miami's new times newspaper, which is a newspaper that has been around for quite some time a local paper that does good long form journalism there, and it is reporting now two of the biggest firms that build the florida international bridge have been accused of unsafe practices. one of those case, another bridge project collapsed and fell on the workers. it's munilla construction management, a south florida firm that won a competitive bid to build the new bridge, which is part of a $14.2 million project funded by the u.s. department of transportation. they beat out other finalists. this group partnered with fig bridge group that has worked on iconic projects like the sunshine sky way. if you have ever seen a picture from tampa, you've seen this passive bridge that is beautiful to look at and an iconic landmark

this is miami today and this is miami with 7 feet of sealevel rise. you can see one of the things that really disturbs me and that i really highlight whenever i talk about this book is it's obvious that miami beach would be at risk by the surprising because the water comes in from the other side. basically coming in from the everglades. when i talked in the beginning the risk of sealevel rise are much more complex than we know. i read about this a month look at but there are a lot of people who live in hialeah and sweetwater who have no idea. these are all basically working-class neighborhoods do they have their own houses have no idea that their houses are at risk. that is something that if there's one message i'm trying to get out its bat. that's the good charleston. charleston, bye-bye. water pushing through all the low areas. there's a delta like area. how about boston? the airport, m.i.t. harbor. this is 7 feet. this is within the envelope of what scientists say could happen by the time my daughter is old. some of this could be mitigated by build

one of the note left here, as you look at the massive response from miami county and miami-dade firerescue, there's an urban search and rescue team down there that deals with exactly this type of an emergency, people who are trapped in rubble, and so you can imagine they are calling all those resources into position now. >> and to your point, we understand that it was not to be opened to pedestrians until next year, so this was brand new, but, obviously, the concern is not the bridge itself, at this point, but what's beneath it. we saw when the chopper moved in a little bit, we could see what appeared to be a mini van or suv, the tail of it there, and another vehicle, half is beneath the wreckage, but five to six vehicles in all were directly beneath there, you can imagine other cars stopping short or speeding by. there were injuries and people taken to hospitals for treatment, but way we know right now, the highway patrol confirming several fatalities in the collapse of this pedestrian bridge over an eight-lane highway in miami. we'll continue to follow developments. we'll come back

you know, miami-dade county has an urban rescue team. these are people who train for building collapses. i don't know whether those individuals are part of that ta team, but that's how they go into a scene. they are trying to get in as quickly as they can to save lives, to protect the people who are trapped under there. are you seeing more activity there now? >> reporter: -- mover somehow around the vehicles that are here at the scene right now. it's really not clear if they're going to bring us closer to the bridge or move it around to open it up for more fire and ambulances to arrive. but it does look like they're actively trying to clear the way and get closer to the bridge. right now they're moving us further and further away from the scene right now. i am at least one block away, 109th avenue and southwest 7th, and they keep expanding the perimeter, pushing the yellow tape past several blocks around the area. they are trying to help the people that are possibly trapped there right now. >> we can tell you that we are getting informat
