this is michael cohen.ou know, a guy whose legal skills have been cast in some considerable doesn't recently. why would somebody be paying him anybody, an american company, somebody from russia. they're paying him for access to the president. they're paying him for information that will help them influence the united states policy on things like sanctions, iran, and other things in which they have a big, big state. i don't think there is any doubt about that. i'm not here saying that any of this is illegal at this moment. it is very confusing. but as confused as many of us may be, you can be sure that robert mueller and his team are not so confused. and i think that, you know, you're going to see an awful lot of people if this is legal calling for reform or the foreign agents registration act provisions that allow things like this to happen. >> you're leading me to my next question, then. because, again, there is no indication at this point that there is anything illegal about this. if the -- is it unusual

all of the information that michael avenatti first made public about michael cohen's bank accounts comes from one of three suspicious activity reports that banks filed on michael cohen. that suspicious activity report refers to two previous suspicious activity reports that the official who leaked the report says are now missing. the two previous reports do not appear on the treasury department's financial crimes enforcement network. the official told ronan farrow, i have never seen something pulled off the system when something's not there, that should be -- that should be, i immediately became concerned. that's why i came forward. this is a permanent record. they should be there. and there is nothing there. the suspicious activity report that has been released shows bank compliance officers repeatedly trying to figure out what michael cohen was up to, morgan stanley smith barnny filed a report saying that the transactions in michael cohen's account there showed signs of, quote, bribery or gratuity. previous reports have indicated that the fbi raid on michael cohen's home and office and

michael's case is no big deal compared to an impeachment offense that rises to that level. >> michael ava naty, can i get you to weigh in here, as we reset, because we have of course been talking so much about what giuliani has had to say about payments to your client and what unfolds next. based on new information from this report, what's your next move in that case? >> well, there's been a lot of information to come down the pike in the last 18 hours. >> just a little bit. >> and we're going to be incredibly -- yes, the pace of this is rather staggering. we're not going to be reactionary. we're going to be thoughtful and methodical and smart about the way we approach this. i think we've done this over last two months. i will say this, i think our case has gotten exponentially better over last 24 hours. i think that mr. giuliani's statements clearly are at odds with a number of things that have been said in the past. it's clear to us that the american people were lied to by the president on air force one and there's been a number of other statements that are inconsistent with those.

i've seen michael cohen at the office. of the press secretaries said, michael cohen was still the president's attorney. of course, rudy giuliani, his latest attorney said on sunday that he is no longer representing him. but it does raise a whole round of questions about whether or not what the president knew and what michael cohen was doing. >> let's not forget, you know, phil mudd, viktor vekselberg, this billionaire, this russian oligarch, who transferred funds into michael cohen's account there, he's now on the trump administration's sanctioned list. he's been sanctioned by the u.s. government. >> and you've got to ask a question, you know, when mr. cohen was talking about potential clients, i realize these are legal clients, but these names never came up. when you look at the judicial authorization to go into michael cohen's hotel room, office, and home, presumably some of that was because people had suspicions about these contacts. a judge is not going to authorize those searches. nor is a judge going to authorize you

so the agreement between michael cohen and at&t was made public this week by stormy daniels' lawyer michael avenatti who joins me now. good evening to you, sir. so the at&t spokesman confirmed to cnn, and i want to make sure i get all this legally correct here, that they hired michael cohen for consulting on the time warner merger, fcc regulations and tax reform. and today we saw the reporting of the $600,000 not $200,000. you said you knew they had more. why did you -- were you just hanging onto that and what do you think of these new developments? >> we knew that at&t paid 600, we disclosed 200, because we wanted to see what was going to happen. and the same thing with novartis. we wanted to see what happened. we wanted to see what michael cohen did, his company did and his counsel did. we're in this for the long game. we're playing strategic chess, not tic-tac-toe. and look, don, here's the bottom line and this is really what it comes down to at that point somebody's lying. there's no question about that. i'm going to call it like i see it. somebody's lying. either the president is lying

so, that was michael's point of view. michael is okay. he's more worried about his family than anything else. we forget when somebody is going through this they're a person and they have children and their children are affected. he told me his daughter was graduating college looking for a job. that's what he's concerned about. whatever happens with this, he's more concerned about his kids and his wife and that's where people are looking out. he's waiting to tell the story. >> i know you're not his spokesperson. let me push back on a couple of those points. one, avenatti's report wasn't taken at face value. that's why i asked jim route enberg. they went out and corroborated it. half a dozen news organizations including yours corroborated. there were records that prove -- >> we will let michael answer that. >> and the other -- is he preparing for the worst? is he prepared to do a deal with prosecutors? >> look, i will answer it this way. i think you have to put yourself in his shoes. and i think it looks like there is a storm coming to him.

michael cohen was his fixer. and he probably behaved in a lot of ways that donald trump would want him to. recording other people, to hold it as evidence against them if they don't do what they want. this could be devastating. we'll have to wait and see exactly what is on the tapes, but any time you have tapes, it's not a good thing. >> how do you view michael avenatti's role in all of this? >> i thought it was interesting that he withdrew a couple hours after being in court saying he wanted to be a part of the process saying i want to withdraw now. i think he's probably seeing his value, his best value being in the provocateur. someone going out there and really going right at trump in a way that many people don't. and you have to give him a lot of credit for that. he's kept this story alive. he's made some relevant observations, i think, that have made people take a second look at what exactly michael cohen could do if he decided to cooperate against the president if it ever came to that. and i think he's chose

michael is exactly right. rudy giuliani is improperly and incorrectly focused on whether or not the campaign paid the funds. that's not what the violation is. it's whether or not anybody paid funds to cover this up in advance of the election and related to the election. and either exceeded the limit that they are allowed to give, which is michael cohen, or failed to disclose the contribution to the campaign which would be donald trump. so it's not even a function of whether or not the campaign paid the money. nobody said the campaign paid out the money. so it is a legal sleight of hand. >> the campaign violation question comes in if there was some sort of accounting maneuver where the consideration was political, campaign related, the data with the election producing, did it constitute an in-kind contribution, something along those lines? >> i think what's really going on here is that i suspect that donald trump is saying two things. one is, if i repay the money, if i didn't know about the payment before elect
