and of course michael avenatti, who is an enemy of mr. trump is now seems to be befriending michael cohen to a degree under the theory that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. so we'll have to see how this goes. >> stormy daniels' lawyer, michael avenatti. it's interesting giuliani himself says on the recording, then the president-elect told michael cohen, write a check, it was $150,000 that karen mcdougal received, not cash. the words not cash suggests maybe there have been other deals where they used cash. >> well, you could read that into it. nothing was paid apparently according to giuliani. so we don't know, but according to rudy giuliani what this means is that the president wanted an accounting of it so that it would not be hidden. obviously cash hides things, so it could be your interpretation, it could be rudy giuliani's more benign interpretation. he's doing his job, he's trying to defend the president. and now lanny davis has spoken out because he's trying to defend michael cohen. >> a lot of different versions of this right now

so michael avenatti weighing in. this is not of course his case, this is another case involving patricia mcdougal, one of the other instances that is so fraught with some embarrassment. danny cevallos, as you look at all of this, and the michael cohen tapes and the way those raids went down, do you think that he was signaling in his off-camera interview with abc that he was angling for some kind of a pardon, and of course a pardon could only cover a federal crime, potential federal crime, or sending a warning to the white house that he was about to cooperate with the prosecutors in the southern district of new york? what do you think his game is? >> for people in situations like michael cohen or other individuals like paul manafort, the question of will i or will i not receive a pardon has been a real gamble for any of these folks, because on one level, if president trump he ever plans--n ever plans on pardoning them, these people may cooperate with the federal government and then the cat is out of the bag. on the ot

michael avenatti joins me now. so michael, only one of these 12 tapes include a conversation between president trump and michael cohen that we know about. you said yesterday that you know there are more tapes of president trump that michael cohen recorded, that there are in fact multiple tapes of the president. are you absolutely 100% sure on that? how do you know that? >> well, i don't know which 12 tapes have now been turned over. i believe that there are recordings beyond 12, anderson, and i know for a fact that there is more than one recording between michael cohen and donald trump. as i sit here right now, i don't know which specific 12 we're talking about or the press is reporting on. so i can't comment as to whether within those 12 there is more than one with the president's voice on it. >> do you know are there ones -- you said you know there are other ones with the president. it was reported there were ones of hangups or voicemail saying, hey, call me back. do you know that -- do you know for a fact there

michael avenatti, an attorney for stephanie clifford, stormy daniels, saying michael cohen should handr these tapes, the tape should be made available. your reaction to that, what michael avenatti is suggesting happen here. >> i think that has a lot of public appeal. but i think this exposes a little bit of michael avenatti's inexperience, having not been a prosecutor and not doing much criminal defense work. because i can assure you that the prosecutors in the southern district of new york who are investigating this case and where i worked for ten years would be very upset if michael cohen released all those tapes and then decided to cooperate. you do not want your evidence in a criminal investigation to be made public prior to charging. because what happens is, when you are talking to all sorts of different witnesses, they now know a lot of what the evidence is related to other people, and they may change or tailor their testimony to what they hear in the tapes. and you don't want that to happen before you charge someone. so while michael avenatti is right, there is an appeal to just

so does michael avenatti who represents stormy daniels. so the reality is there may be more to come that's embarrassing, or the other wild card is to what extent does michael cohen cooperate with robert mueller, the prosecutor in the russian investigation? does he have anything to add there. we don't know the answer to that but this will certainly poke at donald trump. >> you heard the way michael avenatti talks. he opens the conversation with "our friend david." that's like a ripoff of "godfather ii," to be sure. then avenatti goes on to michael cohen to talk about all the stuff, indicating there is more here. and david brings up the possibility that maybe michael cohen has more. if you're making a public case, either a pr case or a legal case, don't you lead with your best, biggest stuff first? wouldn't you imagine this is the best biggest stuff that cohen has and he's trying to embarrass the president? >> potentially. it depends on what cohen's angle is. cohen may be trying to get a pardon here. don't forget, if he's really trying to coo

michael avenatti, save us. you're a lawyer. weigh in. >> well, evidently the first choice for web designer had a headache. >> oh, god, you guys, thank god it's friday. >> look, here's what i'll say. with each passing day and each passing subpoena -- and i will tell you there is a host of subpoenas that have not been reported on and i'll just leave it at that. this situation becomes worse and worse for roger stone, worse and worse for michael cohen, and far worse for the president. the problem is, and i've been saying this for a while, the president trusted his innermost secrets to a fixer in michael cohen who wasn't smart enough and tough enough to serve in that role. you know, sooner or later, things like this come back and bite you and i think that that's what you're seeing. and it is remarkable to me, nicolle, and i think john touched on this earlier. what is most remarkable to me is this. if you know that you've got a guy that has your innermost secrets and is this dangerous, he's probably one of the first people you give a

documents and e-mails and text messages, that's a very, very bad thing to the president. >> michael avenatti characterization of michael cohen there as an evidence hoarder. how concern should that make team trump? >> very concerned. >> it makes the people around trump deeply concerned, officials in the white house have absolutely no idea what sort of records were seized by the fbi from cohen's office. president trump's personal lawyer trying to navigate this mueller probe have no idea what was seized by cohen's office. as we know just from the reporting about michael cohen and his priactices as an attorney, he did keep a lot of record and he did a lot of work as donald trump's fixer. that's more than being a personal lawyer, that's fixing a lot of sticky and difficult situation. if there is a record or audio trail in the form of e-mails or other electronic records that could be very problematic for president trump. >> hugh, i am goung ing to poses to you as well. why would a personal attorney be recording conversations of a man who's running for the president of the united states? >> i will
