we're back with attorney michael avenatti. in player in what we learned today from michael cohen and what it means going forward. he stood in open court today and said, yes, i committed crimes. two of them, felonies. campaign finance. i did them at the direction of a candidate for federal office, also known as donald trump. what did you think when you heard that? >> well, i thought that we made a giant leap forward relating to our civil case in multiple ways. first of all, there's little doubt now that we're going to get a deposition of michael cohen in connection with our case. you know, on september 10th, we have a hearing where the judge is going to make a determination as to whether to lift the stay or the pause in the case that michael cohen had demanded while this criminal investigation played out. well, now it's basically been resolved. so we would expect the judge on the 10th of september to lift that pause, allow the case to proceed. and we have a pending motion to depose michael cohen and donald trump. i think there's

you know, and so that takes us to the next point that michael avenatti races which is is this a backward looking for forward-looking immunity. >> right. >> in other words, is it something that was specific to the michael cohen investigation? obviously now he's pled guilty so that kind of ends the process. or is this something where he'll be able to provide information going forward? it kwo appear to me, ways talking to some former prosecutors about this, that if this was forward, more corroboration going forward from here, that this might be memorialized a little bit of a different way. it may be a nonprosecution agreement, may be some sort of a cooperation agreement in lieu of charges. it may be a little bit more than just an immunity that he was granted. so we're going to have to just follow this over the next couple of days. >> right. >> take a little bit a closer look at the court documents and see where this goes. but at that point we don't have an indication as far as whether or not this is something that has ended. weisselberg did what his job was. >> or that they want more stuff.

all of the different investigation, all of the michael avenatti stuff, giving them plenty of material to say, they got one thing after another that could be connected to the president and the cohen stuff is the worst of it. >> bret: we don't know and what we've seen today if cohen will cooperate with mueller on other fronts whether it comes to money or russia or other things. >> that's right, but cohen is out there. he'll take a deal if it's good enough, he's made that clear. he can still have mueller come to him and say you're looking at six years. he says it's a major deliverable. the fact is, he ultimately gave a mueller what he needs today, he already went on the record to say president trump ordered him to make this payment. he is locked in as a witness. the question is does he have something more? are there some of the tapes relevant, is mueller now going to look at him and say i'm willing to do a side agreement with you, give you a partial deal and to ask the court to reduce your sentence? >> bret: does mueller have more power today? >> yes, he's in a much stronger position. >>
