"the new york times" reports that they talked about the possibility of john hickenlooper dropping out of the presidential race and running for senate in colorado. the democrats need to win just three senate seats to gain control of the united states senate. and john hickenlooper right now is polling 13 points ahead of republican incumbent senator cory gardner. so john hickenlooper is one of the presidential candidates who, if he chooses to drop out and run for senate, has the power to possibly knock mitch mcconnell out of the majority leader's office and so that conversation in the ride around the lake yesterday was, like, wicked important and we are lucky to be joined tonight by one-half of that conversation riding around the lake, senator michael bennet will join us at the end of this hour to discuss the presidential campaign and the democrats' campaign to retake the united states senate and how john hickenlooper might play a major role in winning back the united states senate. we w

>> let's talk about michael bennet.le thought he had a breakout performance last night. the big question is, will it matter at this point? >> that's exactly right, joe. he had a great performance last night. i thought he had some really outstanding sound bites and moments on that debate stage. the next debate, candidates have to in two ways, achieve 2% in four national polls or early state polls and raise $130,000 donations from unique donors, which means 130,000 people across the country have to give them a donation. it could be $1, $5, it could be $2700. but the qualifications for the third debate have significantly increased. so, can michael bennet achieve that? i don't know. a lot of people in america want to see a few more moderates, you know, go forward on this debate stage. amy klobuchar has already announced she's made the third debate i with like to see michael bennet move forward. he has made great points and i think joe biden appreciated him being on the stage because he supported obamacare and made rational

obviously michael bennet is not the only one. he likely won't make this upcoming debate stage? september. but there is also a little bit of descension in the role of a climate change debate. we know that jay inslee was one of the candidates who was popularizing that idea. but climate change activists are on the ground here in san francisco. and they have been pushing this idea as well. we know where the dnc stands on single-issue debate. but that doesn't mean that these activists aren't still pushing. and one of the things i am looking out is a rule that was passed in the rules committee that basically redefines or could redefine what constitutes a forum and what constitutes a debate. because if that rule changes, then it seems like some of these climate forums, i know you are involved with one of them, but it seems like some of these climate forums then could become a little bit different in terms of the role that they play and how the candidates participate in them. so without getting too much in the weeds, that's something that is going to be decided on say. that's one of th

and i will say, michael bennet first of all isone of my favorite candidates. but the truth is you cannot have whichhe republicans do, say chaotic series of debates d ich then went on to dominate somebody who enup as president, but is probably the worst president in the united statese history. we h have a reasonably orderly process now michael has e other shot as do so the other people who didn't get to the criteria this time. the same criteria applies to next month's debate. but at some point if y't get the grass roots together, and raise the money and be in 20 states and raise your profile, then you can be on the debate stage. there are 600 people, roughly, that run for president all the time. and most of them never get on the debate stage. there has to be some order to this. >> woodruff: you are saying at some point there has to be some order, but ashe campaign of senator bennet isou pointint, we are still five months away from the first voters voting and they are asking why is the dnc in a rush to squeeze, to winnow this field? >> well, they don't necessari
