michael boyd, chairman of the boyd group, joins us now with more on that. michael, what do you think? is this going to solve the problem or at least put a dent in the problem? >> no, it's a political error. even before we had fees, we had full overhead bins. what we have today, if there's any delays, it's at the gate, not security. so this won't fix a thing. it sounds good. i just wish they were as concerned about the quality of screening as they are the speed of the screening. >> it seems to me, michael, that obviously the theory there is that if you don't charge people to check luggage, they'll check more, which means there's less luggage going through the gate screening. it seems to me as i travel around that there are no more tsa people, no more numerous places to go through than there were five or six years ago and air travel has risen since then. we've got more people going through the same portals. >> it's risen very slightly. this year it's going to be up about 3%. so it's not like a huge jump. the tsa claims that their staffing was cut. that scedoes

joining us on the phone is michael boyd for his insight into the disappearance of egypt air flight ms804an aviation security analyst. thanks for joining us. >> my pleasure. >> what do you feel at this point? i know this is new, but 37,000 feet, short trip. what is your combut? >> my gut is probably mechanical issues. it doesn't make sense an airplane of that altitude would have any kind of a problem, or a security problem. who was on the airplane? of the 59 or 69 who was on the airplane? was there any people of interest on that aircraft? so you can rule in or out sabotage. an a320 is not usually a target, if you will, unless the prime minister of egypt is on the airplane, you can probably rule out terrorism. >> this is simply because it won't have a huge impact because of the smaller-capacity airline? >> well, terrorists go after something that is going to make a big splash. an airplane with 59 people and nobody of note, it doesn't look like they'd waste their time and energy to do that. the real issue is who is on the airplane? if we can rule out important cargo, then, we're looking at

aviation analyst michael boyd. what do you think, mike? >> a classic case of mismanagement. no, traffic is not up that much. the tsa said it's up 13% since 2013. that's a lie. it's up about 6. this summer will be up -- neil: well, then what are they basing it on? >> i don't know what they're basing it on. it's not honest numbers, i'll tell you that. we know this, that traffic this summer will be up about 3% over last summer. so where's this big surge? this is mismanagement, that's the only way of saying it, and they're trying to make it look like, oh, they're just being inundated with passengers. no, it's with incompetency. neil: you know, i'm wondering if the airlines are partly to blame with the hike in baggage fees and the like that you're just going to have more bags going through carry on and the like and that this is the way, we've got to get used to that, or the airlines could help out if they didn't keep nickel and diming us. what do you think? >> well -- no, that's not accurate at all. we had the same fees last summer, and we didn't have this mess. that's one of tho
