according to michael brennan at the national hurricane center. they are expecting it to come in along the southern bahamas and come in right along the same spot but instead of going out, continuing up through the state of florida and headed in the general vicinity of orlando. that means this storm, hurricane force winds from the storm extend 15 miles in all directions. under this, most likely, not certain but most likely track for the storm, 50-mile-an-hour winds, 50 miles out from the center, hurricane force winds out from the center. that means the entire peninsula of florida could be covered with hurricane force winds, and it could still have hurricane force winds by the time it reaches central florida. this is the brand-new projection. high water, we often talk about water above sea level. he is talking about water above ground level. the area that could get water above ground level would include all of the miami beaches up through hollywood and fort lauderdale, palm beaches, and up to port st. lucie. everything in the florida keys. that mean

i'm going to michael brennan, the chief hurricane specialist. thanks for joining us this early morning. give us your latest projections. what are we looking at? >> we can see on the radar from key west the eye is within 35 to 40 miles to the southeast of key west. these oranges and yell lows you can see, that's the northern eye wall. that's where the 130 mile per hour winds are. those are going to be moving into the lower florida keys in the next hour or two. that can bring catastrophic wind damage. that will bring the storm surge to the center where it crosses the keys. you'll see 5 to 10 feet of storm surge inundation. they're not out of the woods to the west because as it goes by, it will push it into the gulf into perhaps key west and parts of the lower keys. it will be a dangerous few hours in the lower keys. >> last night when i was on the air i was talking to somebody who decided to hunker down who felt at least that she was in a pretty strong building, something that was made out of concrete nevertheless, when i asked her if she was scar

. >> i want to begin now with michael brennan, the chief hurricane specialist for the national hurricane center. michael, i know you're very busy in miami. thanks for joining us. give us the lay of the land here, what's happening with irma. >> well, right now, irma's still a catastrophic category 5 hurricane, maximum sustained winds are still 175 miles per hour. it's now been at this intensity for a remarkable amount of time. right now, our biggest concern in the very immediate future is the core of irma is about to impinge on the turks and caicos islands. they could see storm surge of 15 to 20 feet in addition to those 175-mile-per-hour winds in the core so it's going to be a very dangerous, potentially devastating few hours for those islands. then we expect irma to move generally through the southeastern bahamas and pass between the remainder of the bahamas and the north coast of cuba on friday into saturday and turn northward in the inventory of florida peninsula and move northward as we get into sunday and monday and eventually reach up into the southeastern united states. the bad ne

let's go right now to michael brennan at the national hurricane center. he is studying the maps, the models, the realities. good to have you with us. is it true that hurricane irma is no longer an if but a when in terms of contact with florida and the keys. >> it certainly looks that way, that we're pretty confident now that irma is going to move in over some portion of the florida keys or the florida peninsula and it's certainly going to bring direct hurricanes to a large part of the whole state of florida in terms of the high winds and rainfall. >> and then what? >> all right, so if that's the reality that you're going see hurricane-type conditions, whether the eye goes over or not, it doesn't have to be a direct hit to be a bad hit. what are you seeing in terms of realities now about levels of expectation as you move through this state? because we just heard governor scott saying, you know, all floridians should be ready to evacuate. that's more than we've heard before, and he says that the risk goes from south beach to jacksonville at the northern end

let's turn to michael brennan, chief hurricane specialist, live with us there.entral pressure is up, ever so slightly, the winds are down ever so slightly. is this beginning of a trend? >> we don't, unfortunately, to see irma weaken too much. impressive category 5 hurricane. right now about to move right over the turks and caicos, to bring the 1. 5-mile-an-hour winds, the core winds. devastating storm surge 165 to 20 feet to the island in the next few hours. we don't see much that will cause irma to weaken significantly before it reaches the vicinity of florida over the weekend. >> shepard: any change in the cone, michael? >> not really. you know the forecast is shifted around a little bit as the models have sort of shifted left and right from each cycle to cycle. the overall track still expects this west-northwest ward motion, northward turn in the vicinity of the florida peninsula late saturday night into sunday. motion northward into the united states. at this point it's too soon to narrow down exactly where that turn is going to occur. everybody in florida n

michael brennan, a specialist there.and now starting to move across the area with wind speeds of 80 to 100 miles per hour that will stick around for a while. >> yeah, this is a really dangerous situation that's now developing here across the miami metropolitan area. we were sort of eyeing this feeder band earlier. we can see in the radar very strong winds aloft in it and those will mix down to the surface and we could see widespread wind gusts in that 80 -100-mile per hour range that could cause a lot of power outage, the structural damage at those wind speeds, trees to fall down so everybody is going to want to stay safe in their safe location throughout the day today and well into the evening before the winds are going to calm down. the other thing this band is going to do is push even more storm surge up along the southeast coast, the tide station at virginia key is already reporting about storm surge of about three feet of normal tide levels now and coming out of low tide soon so us this next high tide we'll probably

michael brennan. weep checked with you last hour. what do you see now? >> well right now we're seeing the identify of irma has just passed over the islands of st. martin. the eye wall is just cleared part of the island of an -- sustained category 5 winds. during the next few hours we're going to see the eye move generally northwest ward. that's going to catake the core very close to the british islands and near the coast of puerto rico as we get into tonight. >> is it still too far out to be able to tell where and if it will hit florida? >> well, right now we're expecting a west, northwest ward track and then as we get into the weekend we're expecting irma to gradually turn northward. right now the forecast has a gradual turn with a track near the florida peninsula. but nod models showing track to the left, to the right. this far out, it's -- there's a lot of uncertainty in that timing of that turn, so it's too early to determine exactly where in florida those direct impacts might occur, but everybody there should certainly be monitoring irma's progress

now to michael brennan, chief hurricane specialist. >> good afternoon.national hurricane center. a update on hurricane irma. it's an extremely dangerous category 5 hurricane centered about 650 miles to the

michael brennan at the national hurricane center in miami. every storm has its dangers, sir. was the flooding, and we hear with this it may not so much be the wind, but the storm surge. so basic level here for our viewers not from florida, what is storm surge, why does it matter, what can it do? >> well, storm surge is just simply the water that's pushed up from the ocean onto normally dry land by the winds of the hurricane. so you can imagine here the winds around irma are blowing this way, and so they're pushing water from the atlantic ocean towards the east coast of florida, they're pushing water from the florida straits onto the north coast of cuba, and over time those winds are strong enough, they can pile up feet of water. and actually, storm surge kills about half of the people that die in the united states from tropical storms and hurricanes, and it has the potential to cause huge loss of life like we saw in hurricane katrina and we've seen in other hurricanes historically like ike that storm surge can cause just tremendous devastation. leland: you think about the bar

michael brennan. dr. brennan, what do you see at this hour? >> well, right now we have the eye of very dangerous hurricane irma right over saint martin. as irma continues to move off to the west-northwest, it's going to be moving very close to the u.s. and british virgin islands later today and then passing near or just north of the north coast of puerto rico as we go into tonight. after that time, we expect irma to move into the southeastern bahamas, the turks and cake cos and to the bahamas. we get to the weekend, somewhere in the vicinity of the florida peninsula. >> that's the big question at this hour. you can't tell right now whether it will hit the west coast or the east coast of florida, or is it possible one model has it missing florida altogether and making landfall in charleston, south carolina. >> a lot of potential outcomes. i prefer we couldn't see these dots that show our four and five-day points. our average error is 150, 200 miles. the storm could easily move to the left of our forecast, near our forecast or a little to the ri

i want to bring in michael brennan, senior hurricane specialist at noaa's national hurricane center.looking better or worse? when i look at some of those images in miami beach, see that people are still there, we're reminded a lot of people can't afford to leave. that was the state in ta cree that, the situation in harvey last week. what are they going to face? >> we're still very concerned about irma. it's still a very dangerous major hurricane and we're still expecting direct impacts in florida. right now it's the southeastern bahamas, maximum winds of about 150 miles per hour, we're expecting irma to gradually turn northward and make landfall in the florida keys and somewhere in the southern florida peninsula overnight saturday night into sunday morning and that will bring the core of that major hurricane over the southern florida peninsula somewhere in this hurricane warning area so everybody in south florida needs to prepare as if they'll see those core category 4 winds. very dangerous. we have the potential for life-threatening storm surge over a large part of south florida fro

morgan thank you morgan brennan in central florida for us here on set with me, michael santoli and contributore seen gdp forecasts come down for the third quarter even "journal" was floating the idea that would put off fed hikes and whether that's true or not, look what's happening in the markets. ten-years down to 2% and dollar down to 91 it's like the people think the fed will never hike again. >> not primarily an economic or financial event but definitely part of the whole mix creating this subdued tone, just like in the markets, dollar weak, really fed action being pushed off way into the future. the two-year note yield was down to about 1.25. it was down while other yields run. that basically tells you the market is thinking the ned is going to sit around the for a while. i don't think it's a whole story, but it's one of the unquantifiable things out there that's potentially going to retrain economic performance and make a lot of data noisy and will have a lot of companies coming out and saying, you know, this is one reason maybe we didn't make our numbers. >> certainly going to be noise
