i spoke with michael brennan, the acting deputy director at noaa's national hurricane center in miami just before we came on the air. michael, thank you for coming back on with us. weer with on the air just been landfall this after. at this hour, what are you seeing, what concerns you most? >> well, we're seeing the center of hurricane ian move inland. it's past port charlotte and moved. the winds are starting to come down a little bit, but we're seeing really dangerous storm surge. we're seeing the hurricane-force winds spread inland. they're going to continue to spread inland across central florida tonight, reaching places like orlando. so, going to have really dangerous conditions overnight. in addition to the heavy rain thafl's going to develop across florida tonight and thursday. >> you mentioned the storm surge. you warned of catastrophic surge, 8 to 12 feet possible in some places, even more. we've seen the images now, cars disappearing under the sea water. homes destroyed. families trapped. this was a really serious situation. it's the kind of situation you cannot survive if y

michael brennan is standing by there, the 11:00 a.m. advisory. y don't you tell us what you're see now, michael? >> we're seeing the eyewall of ian starting to move onshore, to places like sanibel and captiva. it's basically like take cover now. hopefully nobody is left in those islands. hopefully people are away from that right now. the eyewall will continue to move onshore and you're going to start to see the water levels rise as the big push of gulf water comes up. that's where we is see the 12 to 18 feet of storm surge inundation above ground level. that's three times as tall as i am. that's really an unsurvivable conditions. >> you know, we keep saying this is the most powerful storm to make landfall in recorded history on the west side of florida. you talked about the storm surge. when do you expect the worst, and how long will it linger at that height? >> well, the water levels will come up, as the eyewall of ian moves onshore, so you're going to have a huge push of the 150-mile-per-hour winds especially on the right side of that circulatio

. >> joining us is michael brennan, acting deputy director for noaa. thank you so much for being with us on this morning as we're watching ian approach here. give us a sense of where you are watching and when you're expecting landfall. >> well, you can see ian right now is located about 90 miles southwest of grnd kay men with intense activity developing near the center. we have seen this intensify rapidly. if we look at the forecast now, we're expecting ian to turn from its northwestern motion and move towards couba overnight tonight and into tuesday morning. then we're expect ing a major hurricane to approach the wst coast of florida during the day wednesday and thursday. for that reason, nwe're high lielgting this area from inglewood including tampa bay is now in a hurricane watch. we also have a storm surge watch in effect for the entire west coast of the florida peninsula. so we're very concerned about those hazards developing as we go into wednesday and thursday of this revon. >> talk to us about the potential damage here, how strong this is expec

i want to bring in michael brennan, acting deputy brechter of the noaa. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration. michael, thanks, again, for joining us today as well. so tell us, obviously tampa low-liaring. what is the greatest threat? >> along much of the west central florida coast from tampa down to the fort myers area. since yesterday seen the track shift farther to the south or to the east. expecting the center of the end to cross the coast of west central florida near the south of the region increases risk of storm surge in places like fort myers, charlotte harbor, can see storm surge inundation up to seven to eight feet above ground level in these areas. this whole area is under a storm surge warning essentially from afte anclo river and zoom in here. an area most concerned for danger of life-threatening inundation from storm surge beginning later tonight and in through the day tomorrow. >> that shift eat to be better news for tampa but bad news for the fort myer area? >> any small wiggle or wobble of the track of ian, even approaching t

joining us is michael brennan at the national hurricane center in miami.re is the storm right now? what are you seeing in terms of wind and rain? >> there's a lot of rain affecting portions of east central and northeast florida. the center has moved off the coast. you can see the radar. all the wind and rain are happening north and west of the center. the winds pull this moisture into places like palm coast, into the jacksonville area, down to daytona beach. we have seen 90 mile per hour wind gusts. we have a tropical storm warning in effect for these areas. we see storm surge happening in st. augustine, into jacksonville. we could see inundation of four to six feet above ground level. the combination of that storm surge pushed in and the heavy rainfall that's falling is resulting in a lot of flooding now. >> could ian regain hurricane status before slamming back into land in georgia and the carolinas? >> it's not far. we are 70 miles an hour now. we forecast it to go to 75 tonight. remain a hurricane as it reaches the coast friday. we have the hurricane w

joining us now is michael brennan, acting deputy director at noaa's national hurricane center in miami again. the coast of south carolina is in ian's direct path. what should people along the coast be expecting. >> right now, this is hunker down time. we have the center of ian, very close to making landfall between charleston and georgetown, south carolina. we saw a wind gust over 90 miles per hour in charleston harbor. we have seen water levels rise four feet aboveground level. we're seeing that storm surge move on the coast now. we're seeing hurricane force winds move on shore as well. this is the most dangerous time here in the next few hours for folks along the coast. >> and michael, talk to me about this threat of the national hurricane center warped of life-threatening waters and winds. how do people prepare for that? >> hopefully, folks in the flood-prone areas have sought higher ground and are out of these areas where we could see inundation of 4 to 7 feet of storm surge. so that's life-threatening storm surge. we don't want anybody to be outside in the hurricane force winds. s

joining us now is acting deputy director at noaa michael brennan. thank you for joining us.rm is now, where it's headed and what is the potential for it regaining strength? >> right now, the center of the storm is just east of cape canaveral, but all of the hazardous weather is north of the center. you can see this huge shield of rain that's affecting areas from daytona beach to jacksonville, all of northeast florida. we have flash flood emergencies in effect for daytona beach. this is areas that are getting sustained winds of 60 to 70 miles per hour this morning. we're seeing that storm surge happening along the coast as well. the coast of northeast florida now with water into places like downtown st. augustine and pushing up to jacksonville beach. the forecast for ian is for the center to move out over the atlantic ask then turn northward, expected to make another landfall tomorrow in south carolina. we do expect ian to restrengthen and expected to be at or near hurricane intensity as it reaches the coast. when you have the hurricane watch in effect from northeast florida

even the hurricane hunters have never seen, acting deputy director of national hurricane center, michael brennan. this storm, it wasn't a category five, at least it hasn't been categorized as that now but it seems like it was behaving in an equally destructive way. >> sure, yes, a strong category four, category five hurricane, there is hardly any difference there. our ability to tell how strong the storm is only good 10% anyway, so we'll certainly go back and look at it again after the fact, when we get all of the data there, but you know, high end category four hurricane in the southwest florida area will cause catastrophic damage and that's unfortunately what we saw yesterday. >> what enabled it to get so big and powerful? >> well, you know, it moved over the warmest water in the atlantic basin there in the northwestern caribbean and the southeast gulf of mexico, some of the warmest water anywhere in the whole atlantic, and it found those ripe conditions, ripe upper level winds, the right amount of moisture in the atmosphere and warm ocean water allowed it to explosively intensify. >> these st

michael brennan, thank you for your help. >> thanks. >> brianna? >> i want to go live to carlos suarez who is on the ground in tampa with more. the danger continues. we're seeing that behind you there, carlos. tell us what you're experiencing. >> yeah, brianna. the damage really depends on the neighborhood that you live in the city of tampa. this might be the biggest tree that we found that fell overnight as hurricane ian moved just just to the sought of us here. you company see the size of the tree, just how big it is. it covers this entire street. it fell atop this white truck and is blocking this road. a few minutes ago a police officer said he was going street by street and writing down the addresses of where there are damaged homes as well debris. he also writing down places that might be out of power. 291,000 people across the city of tampa are without electricity at this hour. power crews are expected to do that work in the next couple of days. we walk to this side so you can see where the tree was standing, where it snapped in half and wher

i believe we have michael brennan at the national hurricane center to give us a sense of the very latest. sir, if you can hear me, where is ian, where is it going? >> it's located about 55 miles west of naples, we're expecting catastrophic impacts along the southwest border coast later today. the storm surge could be as high as 16 feet above ground level in the area near port charlotte, from inglewood down to the beach. >> can you walk me through the timeline from now over the next 24 hours? >> sure. yeah, we expect ian's center to reach the coast later today and will move slowly eastward bringing widespread hurricane force winds, perhaps as far inland as the orlando, metro yau area and move toward the northeast coast of florida. so we're going to have a very prolonged, heavy rainfall event. we could see widespread totals and somewhere in there is probably going to get close to two feet of rain. we're going to have widespread catastrophic flooding impacts across parts of northern central and northern florida from this storm as well. >> that's fresh water flooding from the rainfall, even

i'm joined by michael brennan there.atest update puts the center 20 miles west of fort myers and moving northeast at 9 miles per hour. we should expect landfall to happen here in the next few minutes. >> reporter: now, we've seen pictures from naples where the storm surge has inundated that city, fort myers beach, just devastating. for how long could they be experiencing it? >> well, we're expecting to see storm surge inundation as much as 18 feet aboveground level, especially up in these harbors and canals, charlotte harbor, and you know, even after ian's center moves inland, the onshore flow is going to keep water levels elevated in portions of southwest florida well into the day and through the day tomorrow and because we're going to be having very heavy rainfall that's also going to be trying to run off into those same canals and creeks and into the gulf of mexico, there's going to be water there for quite some time. >> reporter: yeah, we're experiencing some of that heavy rainfall up here in tam ppa, ani know we'll
