director of the national hurricane center michael brennan is joining me now.t is good to have you, sir. i know you have a lot to track. what is the best storm track that we know at this point? i know it is always changing up until the final moment, but what is your best estimate as to where it will hit land? >> well, it looks like idalia is headed for the big bend region of the florida peninsula as you mentioned. exactly where it crosses the coast will be difficult to determine until we get to within a few hours but that will make a big difference as to what area receives the worst storm surge and those very, very strong destructive hurricane-force winds and the i've what is expected to be a major hurricane at that time.i've what is expected to be a major hurricane at that time.expecting it to tu the north/northeast and the center will come to the coast early tomorrow morning. >> and it is expected to undergo rapid intensification as it gets closer to shore. and our understanding is that this has become more common in part because of warming waters there. does

. >>> joining us now is michael brennan, the director of the national hurricane center in miami. michael, what are you and your team looking for now? what is the status of the storm? >> we are most concerned about the rainfall flooding. that's a huge risk stretching from georgia all the way into portions of south carolina and coastal north carolina as we go through the next 24 to 36 hours. wilmington, columbia, that's where we have the highest risk of flash flooding. flash floodings kill more people in this country in the last ten years than any other hazard. that's our biggest concern and most widespread concern for life-threatening impacts as we go through the next day or so. >> those are highly populated areas along the coast. >> that's right. not just along the coast but inland as well. you can get fast flooding in urban areas. if it rains hard enough fast enough, you can get flash flooding developing very quickly. >> what about storm surge? that's related to the flooding and the level of rain. are we still seeing a big storm surge? >> yeah. we are seeing high water levels alo

joining us is michael brennan, the director of the nhc. thank you for being here with us. it has been a busy couple of days for you guys. explain to us where things stand right now, where is the storm and where is it going? >> sure, right now the center of idalia is moving into southern georgia, located about 15 miles south, southeast of valdosta, moving toward the north, northeast at 20 miles per hour. maximum sustained winds of around 90 miles per hour. we're seeing considerable impacts spreading inland. high water values along the big bend coast and the tampa bay region and the stage is set for a heavy rainfall event across interior portions of the southeast coastal plain and the piedmont and then expecting tropical storm and hurricane conditions along portions of the southeast coast and storm surge as well, three to five feet of inundation along portions of the georgia coastline and south carolina. >> talk to me about the speed of this storm. 20 miles per hour seems relatively fast for a hurricane. sometimes the slow moving storms are more deadly and dangerous. where d

but first, i want to bring in michael brennan, director of the national hurricane center. michael, start us off if you will. what you are seeing this hour, the track of hillary, and if it weakens as some reports are saying it might, how dangerous could this still be? >> yeah, yasmin, the storm is pretty much still on track. you know, not much has changed since yesterday, so we're very confident that hillary, as it moves northward, and approaches by how california, moves into southern california tomorrow and tomorrow night, it's going to bring, you know, life-threatening flooding and from a wind perspective, even as the winds we can, as we're starting to see them come down now, that has almost nothing to do with how much rainfall is going to occur and the impacts of that flooding that's going to occur in portions of southern california. we can actually see those rainfall out well in advance of the center of hillary, already falling in portions of southeastern california, southwestern arizona, and into southern nevada. so, folks, this is the day to prepare if you are southern

hurricane idalia has made landfall in florida, talk to the national hurricane center's director, michael brennan with talked to you two hours ago. now that we have seen landfall, what should people be looking out for? >> well, near the core of idalia, in these areas here, perry, and then, you know, lafayette, suwannee counties, dixie, taylor county, treat it like a tornado, get to an interior room in your moment. you don't want to be outside. a lot of debris blowing around, trees coming down, could be structural damage. near the eyewall as it moves inland will see significant wind impacts. also seeing water levels rising on the coast along the big bend region. significant life-threatening storm surge is going to continue for several more hours. elevated water levels down into the tampa bay region still with significant inundation there. we are just starting to see the impacts as idalia moves across north florida, season georgia later today and tonight and significant impacts into the carolinas during the day tomorrow. >> we have seen storms, particularly of this scale, slow down when they start

michael brennan, the director of the national hurricane center, said the rain and flooding will likely be the most dangerous part of this coming storm. so for folks in southern california , you know, the reminder is that rainfall flooding is responsible for most of the fatalities in tropical storms and hurricanes in the united states. about two thirds of them over the last ten years. so while the wind tends to get a lot of attention and there will be wind impacts with hillary, the flash flooding has the potential to kill the most, has has killed the most people in the united states in the last ten years from tropical storms and hurricanes. it will be all hands on deck in many parts of southern california. lifeguards are calling in almost all of their staff to work as they're expecting a swell. that would mean large waves for southern facing beaches. residents in southern california are being asked to tie down or bring in loose items that may have the potential to blow away. but the california office of emergency services is ensuring residents they are ready and prepared for whatever th

. >> bret: let's bring in national hurricane center director michael brennan. thank you for being here. let's go through where the storm is now and what you are looking at. >> right now it's moving inland. the center over north florida moving just south of madison, florida and we can see the very strong north west eyewall that's still moving inland. we saw wind gusts 80, 85, almost 90 miles-an-hour in perry. they're moving to madison and we're seeing the inland wind threat play out while we still have a high storm surge along the coast of the big bend. cedar key you were talking to the person from leavey county. they have 6 to 7 feet of inundation and well south of where the hurricane made landfall. storm surge will stay up for several more hours as these west winds on the back side of idalia continue to push the gulf waters against the coast there. >> bret: it was a category 4 as it came to shore but came on shore at landfall category 3. the real problem is the surge as we've been hearing down there. >> yeah, certainly that has the potential to kill the most p

i want to get to the director of the national hurricane center, michael brennan, we've been talking toals, residents on the ground. to start, as we've been watching the storm intensify throughout the course of the morning what's the latest trajectory of idalia? ? it's moving north, northeast at 17 miles an hour. you can see the eye, expecting the eye to make landfall in the dixie-taylor county region in the big bend of florida here next few hours. folks are starting to see storm surge rise and catastrophic storm surge play out next few hours as well as the destructive winds in the core of this major hurricane as it moves on shore. >> to the time in question, everybody is cautious about putting specific times on anything, but when you're talking about catastrophic storm surge, destructive winds, which you've been repeatedly, when should people in those regions that you're talking about there in those counties be expecting the worst at this point? >> well, you know, in terms of the storm surge, you know, folks in those storm surge evacuation zones hopefully they're gone because waters ar

michael brennan. dr. brennan, thanks for being with us today. what's the latest information you have on what's becoming and now is a category 4 storm, winds 130 miles an hour. >> yeah, idalia's worst effects are moving into the big bend. you can see the eye moving steadily toward the north-northeast quickly at 17 miles an hour, maximum sustained winds around 130 miles an hour and now starting to see the catastrophic storm surge start to take place across portions of dixie, taylor counties like cedar key, water levels will come up here very, very quickly in the next hour or two as the eye wall of idalia moves onshore and brings those catastrophic winds that you see in the core of a category 4 hurricane to the coast in the next couple of hours. >> landfill is expected about what time, dr. brennan? >> be sometime in the next few hours. it's hard to tell. you can tell it wiggles here but i would expect by early to midmorning hours we'll have the center moving onshore somewhere in the big bend region. >> as you look at the map, just the staying power
