joining us now with the latest on hurricane milton is the director of the national hurricane center michael brennan. michael, thank you so much for joining us. once again. we got your update yesterday. what is the latest what would you say is most significant for people to know about where the change in track intensity, any of it that people need to know today well, really things are pretty much on track. >> unfortunately for milton to be a significantly impactful hurricane with multiple life threatening hazards for the florida west coast. still, a powerful category four hurricane this morning. track forecast is really not changed very much. we're still expecting a powerful major hurricane to reach the west coast of the florida peninsula tomorrow evening or overnight tomorrow night into the early morning hours on thursday. we have storm surge warnings in effect, with the potential for 10 to 15ft of inundation above ground level for much of the tampa bay region, down to sarasota. so that's where those evacuations are ongoing. there we've just expanded hurricane warnings across the peninsula now all

joining us now, national hurricane center director michael brennan. thank you for being with us.s is the strongest storm of the season. it's historic in terms of tampa bay. they are talking about a 100-year storm. >> yeah, that's right. tampa bay has not seen a threat from a hurricane of this magnitude that has the potential to produce that kind of storm surge in the region in anyone's living memory at this point this time. we are expecting milton to be a dangerous, large, powerful hurricane when it reaches the west coast of florida tomorrow night. it will bring multiple life-threatening hazards. storm surge, flooding rainfall as much as 18 inches. >> do we expect it might be upgraded to a cat 5? >> it's possible it could strengthen today. we are seeing signs that was right now. it's looking better organized. we aren't expecting a category 5 hurricane when it gets up towards the florida coast. it could be a powerful 3 or 4 hurricane. the main message is the storm will get bigger. it will double in size between now and tomorrow night. that's going to expand those wind and storm su

let's hear the latest about what we can expect from this storm and bring in michael brennan, the directorthe national hurricane center. we have seen conditions deteriorate as milton bears down on florida. what is the expectation for tonight and tomorrow morning? michael: it will be a very dangerous night and much of thursday across the florida peninsula. we are expecting the center of milton to make landfall along the west central coast from the tampa bay area down to near the sarasota area and then move quickly across the peninsula. we have already got very heavy rainfall, tropical storm force winds moving onshore now. storm surge is starting to occur , numerous tornadoes across portions of the central and southern portion of the peninsula. all those hazards are going to get worse through the overnight hours tonight. geoff: tell us more about the destructive tornado outbreak across parts of the state. are we expecting to see more? michael: yeah. you know, what we are looking at here, everywhere you see this sort of bright pink color is under a tornado watch which means conditions are fav

preparations with just a few hours to go joining us now with the latest on this major storm is michael brennan. he's the director of the national hurricane center. michael. good morning to you. what are you most concerned about and what is the latest from your end of this? >> well yeah milton remains extremely powerful, very dangerous hurricane this morning, category five, and it's going to be reaching the west coast of florida now within the next 24 hours, late tonight, the early morning hours of thursday. so folks along the west central coast of florida, particularly in these storm surge evacuation zones from north of tampa. all the way down to naples. you've got your last few hours to get out before water start to rise. tropical storm force winds begin your evacuation routes can be cut off. and again, you don't have to drive hundreds of miles to get to a safe place, maybe just tens of miles to get to a shelter outside of that surge zone? >> what does this hurricane compare to others that you've seen? because the language many officials are using is quite frankly borders on apocalyptic well

joining us now, michael brennan, director of the national hurricane center.ou for being with us this morning. so give us the latest on milton right now. >> yeah, fortunately, jose, milton is on track to bring multiple life threatening hazards to florida. that's starting now. we're seeing tornadoes pop up in south florida, heavy rainfall move on shore, we're going to see the winds increase, that life threatening storm surge play out along portions of the florida west coast this evening and into the overnight hours. right now milton still a powerful category 4 hurricane, maximum winds 145 miles per hour, you can see the eye here on radar imagery, currently about 190 miles southwest of tampa, moving northeast at 17 miles per hour. >> so, michael, let's talk about the issue of where it may hit as far as direct hit, because that would affect the storm surge that different communities could be seeing. >> really does. it makes all the difference in the world, just 10 or 20 miles as to whether this biggest storm surge is going to happen in tampa bay or in sarasota or

let's get right to the director of the national hurricane center, michael brennan. we just had the 8:00 a.m. advice. michael, if you can hear us, give us the very latest on the forecast and the track yeah, at this point, unfortunately, milton remains on track to make landfall along the west coast of the florida peninsula late this evening or overnight tonight as a powerful large hurricane. right now, it's about 250 miles southwest of tampa, moving to the northeast faster now, at 16 miles per hour and you can see on the radar imagery we're already seeing heavy rainfall moving up along the west coast of florida into the tampa bay region across central florida, even in the north florida. so we're going to see the rainfall continue. the threat for tornadoes develop, and then we're going to see those tropical storm and eventually hurricane force winds move on shore later today and into tonight. and then we're going to see that catastrophic storm surge play out near and just to the right of wherever the center of milton crosses the coast of west central florida. overnight

michael brennan is director of the national hurricane center. michael, we've heard the milton has left at least four people dead. that number is expected to grow still fema. and governor desantis both say florida dodged a quote, worst case scenario. what do you think about the level of destruction so far? >> now, we're just starting to see the impacts this morning as light comes up and we start to get a handle on what happened is certainly saw multiple destructive impacts from the storm surge and the tornadoes to the wins, to the flooding. so it'll take some time to figure out the full picture of milton's impacts. but i think certainly we did avoid the worst-case scenario for getting storm surge up in the tampa bay because we had the system come in and make landfall a little farther south. so we saw that worst surge basically from the south part of the tampa bay region down to charlotte harbor and fort myers. some significant surge impacts they're just starting to assess what happened in that region. but we did see that very heavy rainfall, those

michael brennan, he's the director of the national hurricane center. michael, what is your biggest takeaway is the storm moves in? >> that they're going to be multiple life-threatening hazards of to start playing out across much of florida tomorrow, jake, first we're going to start with that life-threatening storm surge inundation everywhere you see in this dark purple here, much of the west coast of florida from south of fort myers, naples, cape coral, up through charlotte harbor, tampa, up to near cedar key under a storm surge warning, meaning the life-threatening inundation is coming associated with milton as its center approaches the coast of florida tomorrow night in the early morning hours on thursday and were especially concerned about this area here from just north of tampa, say the pinellas county, hillsborough and manatee sarasota, this purple area here, someone in here is going to i see ten to 15 feet of inundation of ground-level, likely near and just to the right of wherever the center of milton crosses the coast. but milton's wind field is

joining us right now is michael brennan, director of the national hurricane center. chael, good afternoon. it is going to be quite a storm and the newest data tells us, what? >> well, that milton has reintensified back to a category 5 hurricane this afternoon. we have got data from the hurricane aircraft in there in the last few minutes suggesting that peak winds are are up to 165 miles per hour. very powerful hurricane moving off to the east, northeast at 9 miles per hour. now less than 500 miles away from the west coast of florida. but, overall, the picture for florida is still quite dire. especially along the west central coast and it has not changed very much. we are still expecting milton to make landfall as a powerful major hurricane along the west central coast of florida late tomorrow night or in into the early morning hours on thursday. it is a large hurricane. we are expecting the wind field of milton to double in size from what it is now to when it gets to florida. that's going to lead to multiple life-threatening hazards, the potential for destructive stor

in fact, michael brennan owed to the director of national hurricane center and joins us now. thank you for joining us. okay, understandably you have been -- do we have the guest? understandably, you have been busy but what update do you have this hour? >> with the latest update, and fortunately, a little more intensification. so it is starting to intensify a little bit. but we expect these fluctuations to occur up and down. don't get hung up on the ups and downs. what is important in the take-home message, we expect a powerful hurricane to slice across the florida peninsula late wednesday and early thursday bringing with it a large swath of destructive winds with these wins, you are talking widespread power outages along densely populated portion of the florida peninsula or joe that is just the land. if we switched to the storm surge, somebody in this purple area but not everybody but somebody in the purple area potential to get 10- feet of storm surge. for some of these areas that could be roughly double what they experienced during helene. speed to just be clay or jamie roo

geoff: michael brennan, director of the national hurricane center in miami.hank you for joining us. amna: let's turn to st. petersburg, florida. another major city in the path of the storm. mayor ken welsch joins us now. mr. mayor, thank you for being with us. so you are there in st. petersburg now. i understand you are at your cities tour emergency operation center. tell us where you are right now and what is ahead. >> we are tracking the storm as it comes toward us. we have, you know, knocked down the city, evacuated folks. we have thousands of folks in our emergency shelters and many more have left the city or the county which is exactly what we asked them to be to move out of the threat of the storm surge so now, we are waiting to see which way the storm actually tracks. a storm this size, you know, 20 or 30 miles difference can make all the difference in the world in terms of the impact of the storm surge but we know we are going to be impacted by the broad winfield from this hurricane and we are bracing for that and ready to get into recovery tomorrow.
