fulcroft borough presented 16-year-old michael brodzinsky with its hero ship award tonight tonight. last monday the umpire collapsed after brodzinsky hit a double during a community baseball game. he then rushed to his side. he's a young firefighter who certified in cpr with the darby borough and sharon hill fire companies. >> i think a lot of people should know cpr. they should really practice it and everyone should learn it. i want to make career out of it either in philadelphia or a big city. >> hero writ there. umpire is now recovering. he's a student at academy park high school. >> local high school senior exceeds expectations despite going through difficult times growing up. >> david spunt has his story about overcoming obstacles and a big decision that he announced tonight. >> reporter: it's graduation night for the class of 2015. now proud alums of parkway center city high school. the crowd of excited seniors 18-year-old malik rivers sat issue patiently for his diploma m it's all about beating the neck challenge he was cemented to 20 colleges. >> it's a big number. >> it is.

this 16-year-old literally saved a life when really nobody else could. 16-year-old michael brodzinskyunior member of the darby fire company. we told you what went down last week. michael just reached second base during baseball game when he turned and spotted the umpire collapsing. so he ran over and he started cp cpr. nobody else knew what to do. that teen helped save that umpire's live tonight borough of fulcroft honored him with its hero ship award. >> it's been overwhelming but i mean i like it. it's pretty cool to be honored by everybody. it feels good. i feel like it's kind of my job. i feel like i should -- i know the training i feel like i should do it. >> humble guy. michael says he's hoping to make career of saving lives. in philadelphia or maybe another big city. >> a couple has little too much to drink out at the club why handing the keys to a sober driver landed the pair in jail. >> attacked by a shark. one teen lost his arm. why he says he only has two options now to live his life. >> plus kentucky fried rat? >> what? >> one guy says pulled this out of his meal tom night

michael brodzinski is on second base. the 16-year-old happens to be a volunteer with darby fire company number one. he had no idea his training would come into play on the baseball diamond in folcroft monday night when the umpire dropped to the ground. brodzinski and others at the game rushed in to find the ump without a pulse. >> i said we should start cpr and i said -- they said we don't know cpr. i said i know cpr so i hopped in, took the padding off his chest and started compressions and breaths. >> the fact he acted so fast i can't say it enough it's unbelievable. he's young and immediately remembered what to do and jumped into action. >> it worked out. >> police and paramedics responded but brodzinski continued with compressions. when the umpire left for the hospital, he was breathing on his own and had a pulse. >> adrenaline kicked in. i did what i was taught to do. >> reporter: he may be the rookie at the fire house with only two years' experience under his belt but this small squad of brothers couldn't be prouder
