michael cohen's interviewed with the manhattan da's office at least eight times. then joined the da's investigation earlier-this year and she participated in the indictment that was announced against the trump organization and its cfo, allen weisselberg, relating to an alleged tax fraud scheme. so now, they are working together -- two attorneys from the ag's office have joined the prosecutors and that investigation is still ongoing. it's been active in recent weeks. there is a new, um, manhattan district attorney, alvin braggs, who was sworn into office on january 1st and he is now getting briefed on that investigation and it will continue on its own track, separate from the civil investigation. >> kara scannell, appreciate it. let's get some perspective from cnn legal analyst and former federal prosecutor, jeffrey toobin and preet bharara. who served as u.s. attorney in the district of new york. jeff, do you think the trumps are going to succeed in squashing these subpoenas? >> no, i don't. i think it's worth focusing on just sort of the big picture here, which i

when that did happen, when michael cohen, didn't it didn't have any consequences for donald trump. i'm not sure how worried donald trump would, be but i am sure that would be the reasonable risk. >> that is a very good reminder of michael cohen, he said it publicly, and yet donald trump is a free man. let me ask you, that's the 16 committee is a political committee. it is a committee of lawmakers, politicians, what do they need to get? what do they need to have? what do they need to say to show to the world and maybe to the justice department that this was a definite coup attempt? >> well, i think we need to have open hearings, i'm really looking forward to the hearings. they are perfectly capable of doing that. not only are the congress people who are in charge of this quite excellent, they also have a chief of staff who is a former prosecutor. you can tell by the manner in which this case is being prosecuted by them. so i feel comfortable, and proud about what they are doing. also, since the department of justice is now reviewing the electors, the elector scam, that is like the b

there has been some suspicion, since michael cohen's testimony in the house, almost two years ago.is is the investigation. michael cohen said that the trump organization would inflate the valuations of some of their assets, in order to get larger loans, but then deflate those same assets, in order to pay fewer taxes. so we are now learning is that the new york attorney generals office, is indeed investigating that as part of the civil investigation. and seeking to force the former president his son donald junior and ivanka trump to sit for a deposition. those three had already filed a motion to quash the subpoenas in court, and the attorney general is now responding to those motions in this court filing. >> it is a lot of reading. people who are interested in the sort of thing, there is a lot of detail in here, as to what they allege the misstatements were. there are a lot of them. one of the more interesting things here, we know that these allegations go back sometime. and the attorney general of new york relates to things going back to at least 2004. but what is most interesting

in mind about letitia james is, all of this work began in 2012 when -- forgive me, 2019, when michael cohen basically testified to the world that donald trump had inflated and deflated values depending on how it would make him money, whether with reducing his taxes, getting loans, getting insurance. he said this was a pattern. and the thing letitia james has on her side, defending herself against the idea that she was political, although her statements during her campaign certainly don't look very good for her, but her defense can essentially be, he was investigated before for this exact thing criminally by the manhattan d.a., and at the last minute that investigation folded at the pleading of donald trump's lawyer. ivanka and donald trump jr. are under investigation for the identical thing, overstating and understating values to make money on a hotel condo development. so it's not like this is a new thing of the trump family to be confused of. >> i think that was trump soho, correct me if i'm wrong, carol, and i think you're correct to say michael cohen is the one who brought this up, test

that came up previously with michael cohen showing financial statements to congress. we saw this brand appear out of nowhere from one year to the next of $4 billion. specifically she points to a number of these properties, and these were properties that had the involvement of donald trump's children, donald trump jr., eric trump and ivanka trump, and goes through tic by tic of where these numbers had changed. in 2012, the seven springs estate was valued at $291 million, but in 2016 it actually went to $56 million. they want to know why did that change? trump tower in manhattan, in 2016 it was valued at $327 million on the basis that it was 30,000 square feet. but in 2017 they recognized it was really only 10,000 square feet and revised that number to $116 million. now, trump's seen advisor alan weisselberg acknowledged in that testimony that it was overstated by $200 million, and also the property the wall street when they said the valuations there had changed from 730 m$730 milln 2013 when a bank that loaned them money actually valued it much less at $250 million. th
