in 19 8, around this time, michael dukakis was leading george h.w. bush by 16 points.t continued all the way through the summer. 17 points post the convention. and obviously, there were a couple specific events but he ended up losing. can trump really come in this modern era from behind 13 points, that's just one poll, and win? >> yes, he can. and one of the things that's important to note about that 1980 -- 1988 campaign is that my late friend, lee atwater, running that campaign, dukakis campaign was expected to be hit on economics and all of these sort of issues. lee atwater sent george h.w. bush to a flag factory somewhere in america to see how flags were made, because flag-burning was -- they made flag-burning an issue. they took george bush -- dukakis was campaigning as the environmental candidate. they put george bush on a boat and sailed him out into boston harbor which was filthy. so in other words, asymmetric. >> he does -- whatever words -- >> let me agree with jeffrey here. i think he's right. you can very much close a poll. >> so you think he can. >> sure.

look at michael dukakis. he was ahead 17 points after his convention and he lost. right? so these can change. this is really early. i think the economy number is important to look at because what they're talking about inside the clinton campaign is an economic plan that they have to produce that will show and they want to highlight the fact that donald trump's economic plan would encourage tax cuts for the wealthy. and so this is something they're going to be talking about. they'll get their economic plan together. point out to have trump's economic plan helps the rich and by the way, they're then going to do what obama did to mitt romney on bain capital. go after trump on his business background to prove that it's not what it's cracked up to be. >> both have high negatives. both have very high negatives and try to destroy each. i think we're in for something that's unpleasant in the course of this general election. to each drive up the negatives. it may not be so much about can trump get the voters alluding him and prevent the voters to turn out in large numbers because

>> it could shift. 1988, michael dukakis held a large lead and george herbert walker bush walked all in the fall. but donald trump has strong unfavorable ratings, north of 50%, well higher than anybody ever had. if you look at that and people already have a strong opinion of him. you can't look at that map and say anything but donald trump is anything but a heavy underdog heading into the fall. >> i know you've made a case about how democrats could shape the election, you talk specifically about the voter base and who is coming over to the democratic side. democrats bringing in more people while this traditional republican voting base of white men is sort of, you know, not there where it used to be. but how do you factor in the trump voters, for example. all of these people who have come out now. some people we're hearing haven't voted ever or in a number of election cycles. how do you factor them in? >> a lot of republicans point to the case of the missing white voter. they think that a lot of white conservatives did not show up in 2012. you know, it's true in some of the less compe
