we're joined now by michael eric dyson, professor of georgetown university and proud one at that.me of the year, we have these great speeches encouraging young people to go and reach for the stars or the planets or whatever, to achieve their dreams. but shouldn't we also be talking about the immense debt that they're carrying? that burden that they take with them into the world as they leave college? >> you're so right, martin. because the reality is that debt could really hamstring them so they couldn't even take off. forget aiming for the new planets that are emerging or the stars, they can't even get to the next elevator rung up or next ladder rung up. the student debt as you cited is greater than the credit card debt. we talk about investing in education in this country and yet we're saddling these students with enormous debt that cripples them. they're out of their parents' homes but not out of their parents' pockets. many of these students who graduate will literally live in the basements of the homes in which they grew up. this may be the first generation to deescalate, not

for more now, i'm joined by msnbc political analyst professor michael eric dyson with us from washingtons if the president didn't have enough to worry about, this new boston report and a stabbing attack linked to terror in london today only highlight the incredibly high stakes battle that's being waged against terrorism every single day. how does the president go about reminding americans of that fact and also answering his most vociferous critics? >> it's a great point, martin. because there's a balance between civil liberties and the right to know on one hand, and the security that the president thinks he is responsible for and, indeed, is of the american people on the other. people are quite antsy, however, about the targeting of american citizens. we know that attorney general eric holder just indicated that four americans since 2009 have been targeted and killed by drone attacks. and we know that at northwestern university last year, attorney general holder indicated that there were three criteria by which we were to judge whether or not drones against american citizens would be use

. >> katty kay, and georgetown university professor and analyst michael eric dyson. katty, there was a hue and cry about leaks, and everyone was fanatical about being more aggressive. you may disagree how they pursued the leaks, but it seems into hypocrite cal saying this is outrageous. >> the the job of journalists to find out as much information as they can, and it is the job of the administration and people on the senate intelligence committee to try to protect national security. there will be times when those two jobs come into conflict. this is a tendency in administrations, and true in the bush administration as well, to cite national security concerns when they were prosecutes leaks. the a.p. says the white house was about to release this story, cooperating with the white house on not releasing this story earlier, and they didn't feel national security interests where are valid in this particular case. we don't know all the details of how this will pan out, but we are journalists, therefore journalists are bound to say they are outraged by this, and there is a
