joining me are ed rendell and michael eric dyson. ank you both for being here. >> thank you. >> rev, good evening. >> michael, what do you make of the governor of north carolina honoring jesse helms tonight? >> well, you know, this is a matter of the republican party in north carolina showing its true colors. helms was a southern conservative, he was a man who fostered all kinds of controversy because of his identification with the confederacy. he filibustered for some 16, you know, hours against the adoption of martin luther king jr.'s birthday as a national holiday. here was a man who was in the fundamental sense opposed to the best interest of not only african-american people but this nation in terms of its civil rights progress. as dr. king pointed out, civil rights was not only good for african-american people, it was good for the nation. it made us feel closer to the line of our commitment to democracy. as a result of that, it helped not only black people but all of america in trying to come together as e pluribus unum. so helms
