feinstein's wrong-headed approach. >> joining me, carolyn, who is pushing a similar bill in the house, and also philadelphia mayor michaelutter. welcome to you both. when i heard dianne feinstein today, very personal, very emotional, reliving one of the horrific things she went through, as indeed you did. here's what i don't get. i don't get why within minutes, really, of this assault weapons ban being proposed, already we start to hear, it may be impossible to get it through the senate, through the house. and the main reason may be democrats. democrats who are too worried about their own spins and their own backyards and their own political careers to do what they probably believe would be the right thing for their country. what do you do to change their minds and therefore the chances of success of this attempt to change the law? >> well, piers, what you have to understand, after these horrific shootings we go through, what the nra does is stop all the negative stuff, and the members, to be honest with you, get nervous about it. what we're tying to do is reach out to the american people because i have to say the respon

. >> eric: feinstein had to know they were allowing bigelow and the screen writer michael ball is thatame? >> andrea: yes. >> eric: bolts. whatever. mark bohl. they had to know they were getting access to the c.i.a., right? >> andrea: to her credit, dianne feinstein was one of the few people that stood up and voiced concern about this. she was the one who said wait a minute, and the "new york times" article, there is a lot of detail of how they get the details, i'm concerned. in this case, it seems like the more you read about it, the more you get the sense that the senate wants to punish the c.i.a. somehow. again, the biggest point, this is a hollywood movie. it's not supposed to be a docudrama, it's not supposed to be accurate. if you talk to a c.i.a. article, one has editorial on the daily caller. he talks how enhanced interrogation did lead to capture of bin laden. he didn't say waterboarding, bob. but there is a chain where enhanced interrogation led to tipping off of the courier, that there was a courier which allowed them to follow the clues to get the courier. >> eric: the obam

michael morel helped the filmmakers. now the senate intelligence committee led by senator dianne feinstein of california and backed by johnain of arizona wants to know if there was inappropriate access to classified information. the committee also wants to know if cia personnel are responsible for the film's portrayal of torture. it's not every day a film sparks a senate investigation. joining me tonight to talk about it all is david edelstein, chief film critic for the "new york" magazine. great to have you with us. >> thank you so much, ed. >> i want to talk about lincoln first because i went to it twice. because i love history. but i knew i had missed a lot. every word, every sentence is so meaningful. i was so impacted by the second time i saw it. does controversy affect whether films are recognized politically -- political controversy, social change -- >> absolutely. it's more satisfying to talk about the oscars in terms of their politics and the politics of the voters than it is to talk about them artistically because often it's not a measure of artistry. sometimes it is. it's a measure of what will represent the ac

michael? >> sure. with john mccain and dianne feinstein and you know, other people agreeing and you know, they actuallylittle uncomfortable. like they're not movie critics. i'm actually sympathetic. i haven't seen it. but i'm a public -- i'm a pundit. i'm a little skeptical of it. i've read things like jane mayor has written about it. i'm probably sympathetic to the idea that bigelow is so immersed in that world that she's maybe lost a little bit of objectivity. but i'm not comfortable with senators sounding off on these things. >> bill: michael, you have written a lot recently about the republican party's need to reform and to kind of look at who the party is and where is the party coming from. does lincoln give the republican party an opportunity to do that? >> no! it should but it's not an opportunity they're going to take. this is another interesting hollywood/washington conversation. the lessons washington has taken away from "lincoln." david brooks wrote the column, it shows the need for compromise. well no, lincoln didn't compromise. he didn't compromise at all on his goals. ef steadfast on his
