michael flynn is former director of the defense intelligence agency and joins me now. great to have you here. welcome. >> martha, how are you? thanks for having any. >> good to have you here to talk tonight. you listened to mike tobin's report, listened to the evidence of abdeslam, in custody, not asked any questions at all for 24 hours despite the fact he had bomb-making material and bombs that were set to go in his apartment. how could that be? >> yeah, martha, one of the things i think is coming out of this is the real need for a much stronger intelligence sharing particularly inside of belgium. the other though, i will tell you because i do consider myself an expert on interrogation and debriefing of captured personnel or detained personnel, and it's going to take more than a couple hours to get the kind of information that you need out of these individuals who are suspect. so i think as we go forward, and we're going to all have to do this, i know our fbi does an extremely professional job here in this country, i know our military does an extremely professional jo

then the director of defense and intelligence agency, michael flynn commented that qaddafi was a thug in a dangerous neighborhood, but he was keeping order. how has the ks in chaos in libya, specifically the weapons from qaddafi's stockpiles in the infiltration of isis and al qaeda affiliates led to the destabilization of the middle east and threaten our security interest? >> thank you senator, the first affects of that destabilization was in molly when many of the fighters and arms ammunition explosives had that way which created challenges north africa and mali. the militias who have grown up in and around and used many of the animation stocks for their power and influence, not only only internal to libya, but external to its neighbors, and then the challenges have continued to grow because of isis and its brand of terrorism to threaten places like tunisia and then of course destabilize and total chaos in the area there has contributed to the problem. >> thank you. in a long report last week from the new york times, it was made clear that then secretary of state clinton in the white

but michael flynn, former head of the defense intelligence agency, told the intercept we don't capture people anymore, unquote. slides provided by the drone papers source cite a 2013 study by the pentagon's intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance task force that said kill operations significantly reduce the intelligence available from detainees and captured material. so the task portion recommended capture and interrogation rather than killing in drone strikes. the american public is largely unaware of the high number of civilian casualties from drone strikes. a study conducted by american university professor jeff bachman concluded that the number of civilians killed have been underestimated, and ignored the importance of international law. gregory mcneal, an expert on national security and drones at pepperdine, wrote that in afghanistan and iraq when collateral damage -- that is, civilian casualties -- did occur, 70% of the time it was attributed to failed, that is mistaken, identifications. anyone caught in the vicinity is guilty by association, the drone papers source notes.

. >> he's a friend of yours, michael flynn? >> yes. >> why don't we bring him in. he's the former defense -- director of defense intelligence agency under president obama and he's now on the phone. general, i know you have several thoughts and we have the admiral here also. as we look at what's happening in brussels, was this avoidable? >> yeah. first of all, i think jim is right as many of your guests have been this morning. i think the first thing that we have to do is we have to stop apologizing for what we're seeing here and i think some have said it. you know, i firmly believe this and i do write about this in the book that i'm coming out with, this is a political ideology that's wrapped in this false cloak of radical islamism. let's face it, the tragedy that we have is not working. right now, we're losing -- i'm talking about a big war that's beyond syria and iraq and afghanistan, others you had talked about libya. talking about yemen. now, you know, europe multiple times. we have seen attacks in our country. and i think that jim is right about the social med
