was mark meadows supposed to get in touch with michael flynn and what did they discuss. >> so you talk. establishing whether this helps the committee establish a drink link between the white house and the rioters and the violence and add to the mix here what denver riggleman told over the weekend, that there was a call between someone in the white house and a rioter in the middle of all of it. how does it factor potentially into those question marks? >> well it is no surprise that that line on the phone records caught former representative riggleman's eye. it is a nine-second phone call from a white house phone number, out to one of the rioter who has been convicted of going into the capitol. there is a lot we don't know. who was on the white house end of that call. why was it placed, was it intentionally and what was discussed if anything during those nine seconds. but yes, the very fact that a phone call was placed from the white house switchboard to a rioter, to a person in the process of committing a federal crime, that is really important and something that the committee i'm sure

i'm told we should look out for at best some stuff about roger stone, some stuff about michael flynng. they made some more breakthroughs surrounding those political operatives involvement in january 6. i think that is significant. previouslition we learned that trump ordered his then white house staff mark meadows to place calls to both roger stone and michael flynn and be watching to see if they can make any more head way, any more breakthroughs on the calls in particular. >> the first batch of hearings is powerful. we've seen they held donald trump's poll numbers down a little bit over the summer. even before the fbi search at mar-a-lago. we heard from liz cheney who, of course, the committee's vice chair, speaking over the weekend about the upcoming hearing. take a look. >> jamie raskin was here yesterday with bob costa. >> i heard. the he mock other things said this hearing may be the last hearing that the committee has. can you confirm that? >> no. that's not right. >> okay. so this hearing will not be the last hearing that we will see? >> we don't anticipate it will be the last

a former army colonel, a friend of michael flynn, an ally of michael flynn. he assembled this 38-slide powerpoint presentation outlining a plan to overturn the election, sent that powerpoint to mark meadows. and to republican lawmakers. and helped draft this executive order directing the department of justice to seize voting machines, working with rudy giuliani to gain access to voting machines. this guy was very much involved in the coup plot. he's also texting meadows. phil waldron texts meadows on december 23rd, well before the insurrection. then arizona judge had dismissed a lawsuit filed by friendly gop lamakers. he characterized arizona as our lead domino we were counting on to start the cascade, referring to similar states such as georgia, and meadows response, pathetic. this makes me think this guy is somebody they need to hear from live. what do you make of all the connections that appear to lead right back to mark meadows? >> well, joy, i have said for a long time that mark meadows' testimony and what he knows is absolutely critical if there ever is

december, 2020, phil waldren, a retired army colonel and conspiracy theorist with connections to michael flynns to gain access to voting systems in battleground states. cnn justice correspondent jessica schneider joins me. what do the texts say? >> reporter: they really underscore how trump's chief of staff was really participating in conversations with someone who former white house officials have described as a fringe outsider pushing these crazy ideas really. our team has learned from court filings actually that these communications are now of interest to state and federal prosecutors looking into those efforts to overturn the 2020 election. so as to the texts themselves, our zac cohen has obtained these texts from phil waldren, a proponent of the early conspiracy theories, trying to get access to voting machines. he sent them to mark meadows, and one was on december 23rd. and this text message was to tell meadows that an arizona judge had dismissed a lawsuit from gop lawmakers who were trying to get state election officials to hands over voting machines. and he told meadows there that even

michael cohen, roger stone, michael flynn? as u.s. attorney at sdny, geoff berman says he was told by trump appointees to bring a prosecution against president obama's white house counsel, despite the fact that that man had committed no crime. trump's attorney general also told berman's office to stop investigating anybody else who was involved in the campaign finance felonies that put the president's lawyer in prison. campaign finance felonies that directly involved the president himself and were committed for his benefit. they also tried to undo michael cohen's guilty plea. they did not suck see in that, but they did delay by months any further investigation into other people involved in cohen's crimes. and that's not it. look at this from berman's new book. trump's justice department tells sdny not only that they want to evaluate the basis of cohen's plea and they want sdny to stop investigating anybody else who might have been involved in those crimes committed by the trump campaign to try to cover up evidence of alleged affairs.

we know michael flynn and sidney powell are coming into his office giving really bad advice. but there's a bit of mixed comments there from trump about what he's planning to do, but it's clear from this reporting that he was going to try everything possible to stay in office despite losing the election. >> it's important that in this reporting initially he has accepted the loss. almost with some embarrassment. and that shifts eventually. are there legal implications here? >> we know that there are something like five investigations going into donald trump right now. and going into different aspects of what happened on january 6th. and one of the things that i think will be key is what donald trump was -- his mindset and what he was intending to happen. so if we know that donald trump at some point, perhaps believed that he had actually lost but now was refusing to concede, i do think that will weigh on the minds of pros cecutors when they're determining whether to move forward with this case or that case. >> fascinating details from maggie haberman. so many questions it raise

we saw with michael flynn, with roger stone, this is another example of creating a rule that comes out and says it, which is that he is getting something that every single person, who is under investigation in the united states would love to get, which is in joining a criminal investigation. >> this is an important point. it is not just that she ordered a special master. sometimes those happen. we have situations where, for instance, a lawyer's searched, and you have to make sure that some of those documents are protected, the privilege claims to not get mixed in. she was a step further to the point like, i did not even know a judge could do this. >> that's one of the reasons that people are reacting to this. every single defendant is gonna look at this and say, give me what he has. who wants to have a criminal investigation of himself or herself? you are going to asked to have the same thing. what she did here is that she said there is a tiny kernels of maybe attorney-client information. it's not even clear that the party has agreed that there is some sort of dispute. she took that co

in 2017 and after the calls leaked with trump and foreign leaders and the stories about michael flynn talking to the russian am bassadorambassador, trump fired up at the time and when he talked about that classified information, he did an interview with "time magazine" saying you go to prison when you release stuff like that talking about classified material there. there were other instances where trump baseless recalled for former fbi director james comey to be prosecuted and said comey leaked classified information saying specifically, you know, in a couple tweets he should be prosecuted for that. there was an investigation by the fbi, which found absolutely no evidence that comey leaked classified information. outside of comey, too, he also very, very aggressively went after his former national security advisor john bolton, bolton released that book a memoir of his time in the trump administration. he didn't leave over the best terms. he was a little critical of the former president and trump basically aggressively not just on twitter in interviews and comments, basically said or c

and there was also everyone remembers we started off the administration with the whole deal with michael flynn, his calls were leaked. he eventually resigned, and speaking with "time" magazine at the time, trump was pretty angry about this, speaking specifically on the classified nature of those calls, saying you go to prison when you release material like that. he also was very, very aggressive about john bolton in 2020 after bolton left the administration. they left on sort of bad terms, and bolton wrote this memoir that came out, and trump was very -- was very angry about it as well. he then went after james comey. he said that comey should be imprisoned saying that comey, you know, leaked classified information for basically which, you know, there was no evidence of that at all, and in the instance of bolton, he was very, very aggressive on this. we can take a listen here to just one of those interviews that he gave, and there were a number of them in which he called out bolton very aggressively calling for his prosecution. >> john bolton is incompetent, okay? but here's what he did. he re

we know that michael flynn proposed using the military to seize voting machines.that failed, they tried to do it in a one-off manner. we know some of this information in arizona, at least to this group called the cyber ninjas, even that alone was problematic. if you could find this was coordinated at a high level, that someone like sidney powell or someone else close to trump was coordinating all of this activity, that most certainly could be part of a larger investigation into conspiracy to defraud the united states. that is suggesting that the election was stolen when in fact it was not. >> and what about sidney powell here? she potentially exposed legally? >> yeah, i guess we don't know exactly what her role is in all of this. she's at the heart of the storm in many of these things. in michigan here, when she was filing a lawsuit that was baseless, she was sanctioned by the judge for filing a frivolous lawsuit that had no basis, in fact. she was on a tour doing this in a number of different states. and so to the extent she genuinely believed there was fraud in

you know, when the pillow guy comes in and says here's what i think we can do, when michael flynn andney powell are proposing rerunning the election, when he is, you know, literally getting all of the texts you just read, all of this scandalous material where leading republican advisers to donald trump are begging the chief of staff to get the president to do something, he's there and replying, at least in one instance, to the white house counsel, i'm sorry, pat, he doesn't want to do anything. he's eyes and ears for so much of what the government is trying to understand. was donald trump as president knowingly, intentionally defrauding the government, conspiring to obstruct a government proceeding. he put the target on the back of vice president pence. that's visibly known based on literally his own tweets. but what does mark meadows -- what can he tell the government about what donald trump was acknowledging one-to-one, man-to-man when these ideas were being fleeted. at least in one instance, nicole, which you and i have talked about, which i would like to harp on a bit, at least in

house, peopler with not there and that vacuum was filled by rudy giuliani and sidney powell and michael flynnrt of thing that's happening again. those are the characters, the only characters left around the former president. >> how do you evaluate the criminal exposure of these sort of dead enders? >> so, you know, one of the things you do when you're a criminal prosecutor, you look for people as you are going up the chain, you know, this is when we were doing paul manafort, we saw, wait, there's rick gates, you look for people who are around the person and you think, would they be -- do they have criminal exposure, can you build a case on them and then you can flip them? obviously mark meadows is, you know -- >> flashing red light, right? >> there's so much that -- and he has to decide, as we used to say, which side of the v he's going to be on, which is, in the united states versus, is he going to be on the united states side,cooperator, or on the defendant's side? and the one other thing important to note is, and it's hard not to read this in light of what's going on is, merrick garland ga

a group backed by maga allies, like former national security adviser michael flynn, and -- patrick byrneity of more than 37,000 voters in a key democratic county. let's talk about all of this. joining me now is executive director of -- and the host of the roland martin unfiltered digital daily show. he always has so much to say. -- i do want to kick it off with you. -- how big of an impact do you think this is going to have on georgia voters, with this constant effort to suppress the vote there? >> we are going to see it all. vote by mail, early, vote we're gonna see it on election day. it's already hard getting people to the polls and reminding them that yes, you need to vote in a few weeks. that alone all of these new voter suppression tactics. we were just in atlanta just a few weeks ago. i promise you all, the enthusiasm level is there. republicans are showing greater levels of enthusiasm. but these voter suppression tactics, they are so extreme in a state like georgia. i want to remind everyone, the burden here is going to fall on these county election boards. to go through all of t

involved in partisan politics, because you may recall at that time there were rumors coming from michael flynnhe insurrection act could be invoked. so that the then president could take over the voting machines and alter the election. ten former secretaries of defense at that time were in a letter writing campaign. because just about a year ago, almost 100 national security officials, military and civilian, again, wrote an open letter that the january 6th insurrection constituted an undermining of democracy throughout the world. that we were being undermined ourselves, doing it to ourselves, where other countries could look and say, i guess democracy is not a role model we want to follow. a week or so ago, judge william webster, former cia director, fbi director, former appeal let judge contacted me and said can we write an op-ed to talk about what is happening to this country. that the president of the united states is putting a target on the backs of our fbi agents? we need to speak out against that. and now finally comes this month's recent letter that was initiated by general martin dempse

we were with him when he launched stop the steal on january 5th when he was communicating with michael flynnle on the campaign. >> let's talk about stone there. it's remarkably -- he's remarkably candid. he's saying this is what we'll do. stone is a flamboyant character. he's been in trump's life for a long time. did you have any sense at all while he was talking to you that he knew what he was saying was wrong or illegal or he felt this is the power of the president, we can strongarm our way into office. >> i got the sense he thought they would get away with it and they were in the right to do it. but he has this -- as with trump -- they have this win-at-all-cost mentality. i don't think they take those things into account to be honest. >> as we said a minute ago, we'll see clips from your documentary from the select committee, from the january 6th select committee in congress. you guys were subpoenaed for that information. initially you told the "washington post" you were reluctant to provide that material. what was that reluctance about and why did you ultimately hand it over? >> i think

and the michael flynns and the mike lindells of the world, they are the ones who were in the oval officeacy theories about how the election had was rigged, but also what they could do about it the idea of calling martial law, theed in of seizing voting machines and obstrucing the peaceful transfer of power. that's where this investigation is. to mike's point, the agents and the department of justice not just pursuing what happened there with mar-a-lago, but the january 6th investigation continues. and many people believe that still is where the most legal peril rests for the former president and we saw more than 40 trump associates had served subpoenas. this investigation is only going wider by the day. >> and but the way, those fbi agents were smart enough to know you bait that trap with a hardee's value meal, you're going to catch mr. pillow every time. >>> we're keeping an eye on london where in just over one hour, the procession to move the queen's body from buckingham palace will begin. >>> also chris coons will be our guest as he prepares to chair a meeting on the need to protect i
