from washington michael gordon, chief military correspondent from "the new york times". he is currently on leave from the time and work on a book about iraq and fred kagan of the american enterprise institute. he was in iraq this summer and just returned from afghanistan where he was helping with general stanley mckristol's strategy review. i'm pleased to have each of these knowledgeable people about iraq and afghanistan on this program. tell me where you see iraq today, and what are the -- how do you assess the pitfalls that might still be there, and the opportunities and the possibilities even of accelerated withdrawal. >> well, i think what's very clear is that iraq's problems are as general odierono has said. this he are predominantly political to you but there is an undercurrent, under -- ongoing violence that really has not stopped. and i think that is what has made certainly american policymakers nervous. but also has made iraqis nervous. because what they don't feel sure of is whether that could accelerate. general odierno has talked a lot about the friction in t

michael nash of silver spring. he was killed by a large piece of equipment whose movements he was supervising. chris gordonreports tonight from northwest. chris? >> michael nash was working as a flag man, protecting the repair crew along the tracks. something went terribly wrong and he was killed. now the heavy equipment is being inspected and the operator of that equipment is undergoing routine alcohol and drug testing, which is the case in all serious accidents. the fatal accident happened along the orange line in fairfax county. the victim was working as a spr th wiinemovts thoperator of ack traoporater ot that deposits and spreads gravel between cross ties. he was part of a maintenance crew of about 12 employees. the general manager says an investigation will determine the cause, if someone got distracted or if there was an equipment malfunction. in the meantime, he has ordered a safety stand-down, a four-day suspension of all track maintenance with increased safety checks at work site. >> the reason for this sta stand-down is to have each of our employees go through the proper safety procedures for ou

gordon has a sore back at this point. robin? >> thank you very much. >>> michael jackson's autopsy is done, but we still don't know what it say. the l.a. coroner's office says the police has asked them not to release the singer's cause of death because of their ongoing investigation. they could file criminal charges against jackson's doctor, doctor murray. he gave the alleged propofol in the 24 hours before he died. >> it's certainly one of the truisms of criminal law that cases don't get better with time. you should file a case as soon as you have good evidence, but this is a complicated case. there's a lot of scientific evidence involved, tissue of cause of death, michael jackson's access to drugs is a complicated one. dr. murray is not a fugitive. he's not going to go anywhere. so i think it's best to make sure you have the best evidence you possibly can before you file charges. >>> a judge wants to appoint a lawyer for jackson's children to go over the details. the contracts are for tribute concerts next summer and a traveling memorabilia exhibit. the final re
