michael gordon, he is a storm chaser who is in mayfield right now. he's at that candle factory where search and rescue operations are under way. and as we look behind you, michael, it looks like an enormous debris field that is several feet high and maybe a couple hundred yards wide. what are you seeing there right now. >> yeah, i believe -- i think there's upwards of 12 -- probably 12 feast debris, and, yes, it spans the full length of that factory, which i don't know exactly how long it is, but, yeah, it's just a pile of rubble. everything -- i mean, every corner of the yard even, surrounding this factory, has debris. it's pretty much covered with debris. and the wind's going to start picking up here. it's getting cold here as you can see. >> yeah. >> but, no -- >> michael, i can see a few people walking through the debris behind you. what have you seen in the way of search and rescue efforts? have they been able to perhaps pull someone out of the rubble? have they made any contact with somebody who may be trapped inside? >> yes, it's kind of hard t

michael gordon, you're with me now, here's my question.s to. what was your reaction when you saw this and kind of how it moved over the course of the night? >> the damage here is catastrophic. again, like everyone is saying is undescribable. it, the tornado from arkansas to mayfield and on. and i believe that it traveled at a very fast speed as well. when i intercepted the tornado on i-55, it was moving at a very fast pace. it was very violent. it it had a lot of power. and to see what it did up here, i don't even think here in mayfield, i don't even think it was at that level when i intercepted it. so it grew on its way north, this, the damage here is unbelievable. there -- going into, i believe i arr arrived in mayfield around 10:30 last night, i believe. i was not here when the tornado actually hit, but seeing the first responders on scene immediately. especially at the candle factory. i know that's been one of their big priorities. another big priority that i see now that everyone heard with the governor is the roads. and driving up an

michael gordon is on the spot. he is a storm chaser. he's in mayfield, kentucky, where as you see there's extensive damage and there are many people who have lost their lives and the search and rescue continues. i want to go to msnbc correspondent, stephanie stanton. what have you got? >> i am struck by that storm chaser and the emotion in his voice. this is someone that does this professionally and you saw him struggling how to find words and how to think and how to feel, and that is so telling. that really puts it into perspective and looking at all of the pictures, too, that are coming in and all of the video. you really can't put it into words. it is complete and utter deaf station in some cases and what these people, what these survivors of this tornado will be, and for the next days, weeks, months, it will be extremely difficult and challenging. we're seeing some come now and when you see the tornadoes poos through and maybe you see one house that wasn't damaged that much and then you see houses reduced rubble, so you will have to

it's storm chaser michael gordon. michael's actually in missouri right now. i spoke to you yesterday morning. you arrived at that candle factory here in mayfield soon after it collapsed. and you watched as rescue workers were pulling survivors out and often finding that a lot of people didn't make it out of that candle factory alive. i'm wondering what you're seeing now where you are and how you've processed everything that you've seen over the last 36, 37 hours. >> yeah. we've actually -- we're doing another full survey all the way back starting in arkansas. we've been going through, and we are starting to see devastating damage. i'm here right off of i-155 where tornado crossed i-55 and then went to 155. the damage i'm seeing is devastating. we're sad to see these communities are just -- it's heartbreaking. the power crews are out there working their tails off. and i'm seeing multiple power companies putting in new lines. they're working day and night to get power back up to these four states. like i say every time, this instance is very -- it's unexplainab

. >> joining me now to discuss is storm chaser michael gordon who experienced last night's storms. ut what you first saw when you came across the tornados. >> yeah, i mean, i followed and watched the tornados start spawning out of the arkansas area and intercepted it near missouri where that same supercell tornado traveled the next, i believe, roughly 200 miles through tennessee and then into kentucky. seeing that tornado was -- to be honest i've never been that close to a tornado. i didn't expect to be that close to that tornado. i didn't expect it to be as large as it was. when that thing went in front of my truck on the highway, i went, whoa, i mean, it was loud. even with my windows rolled up, before i rolled my winds down, it was a loud roar. you could feel the tremors coming off of the -- the radiation coming off of the decycling of the tornado. you could hear debris just whipping throughout the air. watching power flashes as it went towards -- i'm trying to think of the name now, sorry. but as it went towards there, you could see it having power flashes throughout the power l

michael gordon there for us on the ground in mayfield, who also took some just incredible video of theuri, video that i want to show meteorologist bill karins, so bill, you're back with us, and if we can show that video and kind of watch it together, you're more of the trained eye here. what is it that you pick up and glean from this video? >> the ef-4s and ef-5s, there's a tornado scale it goes from 0 to 5, 4 and 5 are the strongest. about 1% of tornados are these ef-4 and ef-5s. 95% are ef-1s that do a little damage. this is what we call a wedge tornado or a stove pipe. it's kind of hard to tell exactly, but this was an ef-4 or ef-5. it's just a massive tornado that was on the ground reportedly for four hours over 250 miles. we don't know if it was continuously on the ground, maybe it lifted occasionally and dropped back down. we won't know that later today or maybe even tomorrow, but when the lightning illuminates it, it's as scary as it gets. we know that this one, you can see there it just kind of looks like a wedge coming out of the lowering of the cloud. there in the background

my colleague michael holmes just spoke to storm chaser michael gordon who is sharing the story.ere it is. >> devastation. i mean, homes leveled, rubble everywhere. there's -- it's hard to explain, especially in the dark right now. it's very sad. you look around and you have people walking on the streets. other families looking for their loved ones still. i was out earlier before this call, going through some of the homes, trying to help out as much as i could. i think the mayfield city -- city of mayfield has been on top of it. they got -- the personnel, they got the search and rescue teams out. they got dogs out now. we've seen a lot more rescue efforts. but the damage is pretty much undescribable. >> and to put that in context, i mean, you chase storms, is this kind of what you do. how does this compare? >> this is probably one of the worst storms that i have seen. the closest i've ever been to such a large tornado in my life, and it's -- like i said, it's really undescribable. there's so much -- >> what does it look like? what does it feel like? as you're looking at this bigg

. >> reporter: here with me now, storm chaser michael gordon and meteorologist and storm chaser simonich really got a direct hit. >> yeah, as i made my way to the candle factory, i noticed a lot of flashes lights, a lot of volunteers, a lot of emt personnel rushing to do what they had to do. they were pulling multiple pieces of rubble piece by piece to free some of the employees there at the candle factory from the rubble. >> simon, you have been doing this a long time, just in terms of what, you know, the things you have seen, the storms you've tracked, how does this compare. >> this is very similar to tuscaloosa, alabama, back in 2011 during that big super outbreak. really intense path, really long path, this one's about three times the length of the tuscaloosa tornado. >> reporter: they said this was on the ground 128 miles, and maybe even longer. the national weather service is still studying it. >> yeah, so the weather service is going to find out whether this was a single path or not. if it is a single path, and we're pretty sure it frprobably is, yesterday we were looking for t

michael gordon of the wall street journal wants to know -- it was said yesterday that if russia invades the u.s., we will provide military to support to ukraine above and beyond the current package that is already flowing. should the u.s. provide that additional military support now ? and what specifically should it provide in the limited time that may be available for the ukrainians to integrate it in their forces? the floor is yours. >> yes. we should provide things that they can almost immediately use. one of those things, as was mentioned before, they do have some capabilities in air defense, but what they don't have is the ability to lash it together, to be able to sense, discern, target and assign weapons. there is things we could do to help them with that? >> kenny be more specific. >> i will not use weapons names. we need to develop a capability for them which is a series of things that bring them to the ability to deploy. >> sandy, heather, john, andriy, anyone else? >> yes. dealing with u.s. help from 2015 consider that logistics takes an extreme longtime. so, planning to do t

michael gordon, a storm chaser, he was tracking the tornado. he was traveling to mayfield.red down. bad conditions continue. he spoke with lindsey reiser earlier. listen to what he said. >> when i saw it on radar, it wasn't looking like it was as large as it really was. after it passed my truck, that was something that when i rolled my window down, you could feel the pressure just drop as it was sucking everything it could off the ground. you could feel the -- the intensity, the noise, the power flashes. just thinking what that tornado was actually doing as i could only see it in the dark. it was, you know, a gut-wrenching thing to see it just keep moving and then to learn its tracked over 200 miles and has destroyed many, many cities. one of them is mayfield. i'm actually sitting here in mayfield next to the candle factory. everywhere throughout mayfield is a destruction. i don't know. i don't like looking outside my truck as it is getting light because there's -- there's nothing left. >> there's nothing left. a lot of destruction in mayfield. you saw that candle factory.

let's go to storm chaser michael gordon who has been assessing the devastation on the ground in missouri and kentucky. he joins us now from near mayfield, kentucky. thank you for joining us. that is the site of the collapsed candle factory where authorities are still searching for survivors. michael, your sense of how things look on the ground. >> devastating, it's horrific exactly, you know, what human nature can do, and people, i think, underestimate that. i mean, these last few years mother nature has done some serious damage across the united states, and i think people are starting to see that. this -- the debris, the trees that are shredded, i mean, buildings flattened, homes completely off their foundations. cars stuck up in trees. i mean, a little ways away from mayfield, i seen whole power pole off the side of the interstate that was just stuck in the ground like it was lofted up into the air and just slammed into the ground. i mean, it's just -- the debris is so widely scattered and it was on the ground for so long that when it came into mayfield, i believe it was at its peak in
