we bring in michael lewis of lazard capital markets.ith a new report today saying the trigger will have a devastating impact on the industry and national defense. thank you for joining us. >> thank you, maria. >> i was really interested in reading this report because we know that the defense companies are front and center in terms of companies that will lose federal dollars, when the spending programs go away. what are the consequences? >> it's certainly true. really major consequences, jobs. there's going to be a risk to many thousands of employees being cut. we're going to see the industrial base for defense really significantly impacted. at the end of the day, it's not going to be good for the companies as they try to run their companies with less money. >> they have to tell their employees if they're going to cut workers by october 1st, right, the defense companies? >> in fact, it's november 2nd. it's the warren act. >> november 2nd, okay. have we heard of the announcements yet? what are you expecting in terms of layoffs? the defens

. >> rose: michael lewis reports-- who spent a lot of time close up with president obama-- but michael says at 10:00 the kids are in bed and mrs. obama is in bed. he's up from 10:00 to 1:00 calling foreign leaders, looking at his ipad, reading things. now, that's probably a good time to get chummy with members of the congress that could help you wouldn't it? >> listen, if you want... i mean one of the things that i report in the book is jack lou, who's now the white house chief of staff who was the budget director during much of this back and forth, he worked for tip o'neill when tip o'neill made the deal with reagan on social security. and the point lou makes is that it would be un... that reagan, tip o'neill disagreed on just about everything, but they had this relationship where they could talk and they knew they had to accomplish certain things like save social security in 1983 which they did. now, this does not speak well at all for the way the house republicans operated, but when obama wanted to get a phone call returned they wouldn't call him back. jack lou was running through t

when you start to see some of it in these long pieces where somebody has had a lot of access like michael lewis. >> i think one of his problems is, and this has been clear for a while, he is not needy, he is not a needy politician. >> rose: right. >> and there is a reason almost all other politicians are needy, because the profession almost self selects for neediness, next to acting, hollywood. >> rose: right. >> politics is full of the neediest individuals, and so on one level that is good, it is nice to have a. >> rose: it is nice to. >> >> rose: he does haven't that. >> it looked ba good on one level he is secure and not needy but it hampers him because if you don't show that you have some neediness and try to compensate for it by reaching out to people, you are going to have a gap between you and not just the public, but the people -- the politicians you have to deal with every day. i don't think he really likes politicians -- >> rose: one thing, there is also neediness and not neediness and imperviousness, imperviousness to a sense of people who have helped you and things like that. >> wel
