and michael mann joins me now. thank you so much for coming back on the show.e, the impact of climate change nordic constitutes an accidental threat if we fail to act. but we can act. our fragile moment can still be preserved. and i admire your optimism, but personally i for one to spare when i see what we have seen this summer. the record temperatures, the lives lost. the natural disasters. how do you maintain that hope? >> yeah, it's great to be with you, mehdi. we all feel that. my city of philadelphia, we are the worst air quality in the world for several days. and that was because of these unprecedented canadian wildfires and the smoke coming down from them, into the lower 48. so we are seeing devastating climate consequences. there is no question about that. now, if we look at what the models have predicted, decades ago the warming is actually right about where the models predicted it would be. if we continue down this course of fossil fuel burning. so we got that right. with the models, probably underestimated. with some of the impacts of that warming, t

with this issue, let's talk now to one of the most influential climate scientists on the planet, michael manns latest book is "our fragile moment: how lessons from the earth's past can can help us survive the climate crisis." congratulations on the book, michael. despite this year being on track to be the hottest ever recorded, you take as bill just did a cautiously optimistic tone in your book. you write, "the greatest threat is no longer denialism, which is frankly untenable given the impacts that we can all see playing out in real time, but rather doomism, the notion that it's too late to act." so what lessons from the past give you hope that we can actually meet this moment? >> yeah, thanks. it was a great sort of summary that bill provided there. and he emphasized sort of this duality of urgency and agency. the urgency is obvious. it's clear. we're all feeling increasingly dire consequences of fossil fuel burning and the warming planet that that's causing. but as bill alluded to, we have agency as well. we can reduce our carbon emissions enough to avoid crossing into truly catastrophic t
