michael maloof. michael, how critical is the us budget situation right now? is the $1000000000.00 that the o m b director of singled out a sufficient amount to apply this the us armed stop file as well. thanks for having the ritual. no, it's not. and secondly, there's no no indication when this is going to be passed. this is going to be in the defense department budget. and it looks like this may not occur until next year . sometime you have both the house and the senate at deadlock. and in terms of what they, in terms of priorities of what's to be funded. for example, the, the house wants to do one at a time. they are a fund of israel, but not ukraine. the senate wants to roll them all into one. and the president has indicated he would veto in the bill, but only and that, that did not include the ukraine. secondly, the defense department does have a contingency fund that's worth billions of dollars. and a lot of our special operations activities are funded out of that it's, it's, it's can conceivable that some of the funding as a stop gap could be, could be used for to replenish our old suppliers. and what's, what's ironic is that the 2 carriers stripe groups that are now in the eastern mediterranean has no money to back them. and the pentagon has admitted that it was not, it was not budgeted for that. and then they would have to go get a whole new appropriation for that. so the united states, as a, is supported to many wars on the one hand and that looking out for itself. and that is it sole stockpiles i might add, that the, the oil reserves of the united states are at its lowest point that have ever been. and why we should be replenishing that oil supply because of increasing tensions in the world and, and the need for uh to backup our own forces and our own home. these uh, fi by the ministration is not allowing for any drilling that would allow for that to be filled in at this point. it would be very expensive. so it's, we have a catastrophe about ready to do that's moving on us right here. and the administration is totally quiet about michael house. republicans remove the $61000000000.00 aid package for ukraine from the budget, and the white house agreed to a $175000000.00 line of funding for q. what does it say about future funding for ukraine? well, i think it's in jeopardy. there's, there's um, this in principle, some desire to, to have funding both for ukraine and israel. but what's also holding it up is something domestic. and that is our own southern border and an enforcement on the southern border. not just funding to process more immigrants, but to actually stop the flow that's occurring now. right now it's, it's we're, we're reaching more than $12000.00 a day coming through the southern border, and that's impossible to manage. and there are some, some very serious concerns about that. if we're going over there to protect other countries, borders but not our own. what's the point, what, why are we, why we do this? and this is, this is a very, very, a glaring every newscasts that we see now. and it's, it's, it's cre

michael michael the way to understand hungary would be through the path of eastern europe which about 1.1% of americans understand, eastern europe being so complicated is no way in which that comparison could have been or american to understand what eastern europe even was. and i'm struck by that more and more, almost every day, which highlights think even further this problem of that. it's not just the american in this case, it's the european context, not just the european context. it's eastern european context, which is under underwritten about scholars and and the scholarship on it is the popular scholarship. but but most of all as i as i listen to this, it seems to me that i'm sitting in a room where. people have done utterly brilliant work that they edition, that people here have put out the amount of work that's gone in to the effort to everything. right. it has been astounding. and yet here we are in a world in 2023, in which we've in which departments are being diminished the humanities are themselves being diminished we're not stem and we don't get that kind of of financial support and and we feel at the same time people we have nothing really to say and and i think must be frustrated doing is who's listening. so we into things like blogs and so on so forth who's listening. but i wonder if maybe there's a more of a top down kind of way to do this, i don't know whether. the dadt works, an organization with educators because how do we get the stuff that we do, stuff that's so profoundly good into high school classrooms? they do still teach american history. they don't teach european history much, but they do still teach america at history. how do we get to we assume that university level know about us? but i'm not even sure that's true. how do we do that and how do we we we produce, as i say, these brilliant, brilliant work that can be accessed, which could be used by high good, high school students and high school students, but they can be popular writers, university students. they all need context, but most of all they need attention. and and and and i think sort of from the bottom who's listening to my podcast or who's reading my letter to the editor in the washington post? that's not to say that there aren't 10,000 people reading that letter to the washington post, but i'm sure what we have a bigger problem in front of us. and so i wonder whether we ought to be thinking about how we get other interested, how the adl itself links to other education at all institutions or pieces of them, and and i don't even know what to say about popular presses obviously university presses to to to to make this work to shine a light on this, which is so fabulous and so. i want to say that at least the emma goldman, we have done several high school and middle school and gone to the educate. there are meetings of, secondary school teachers who love the material even though they sometimes have a hard time getting it through their board. but they love the material because we we set out the quotes, the context and the kind of questions that work with our material and that, you know, after doing that i everybody should do that except we're all so busy but that that really helps. but i also that's one of our or at the jane addams papers that's something we have realized that honestly a lot of people do what they do want this way to teach more specific history in their mostly high school courses we create we've gone out of our to create guides for them and we utilize the the students who in our teaching a portion of our college to write mostly ap history guys. but we have written things. i don't know if anyone participate in national history day. we have a lot of guides on the of national history day and those are honestly most visited sites on our websites consistently. and i, i know that it is not one of our primary focuses as editors but i do think that if you can find someone to with because i don't know how to write an ap history plan and i neither neither do of our editors but if you have the ability to find someone that can with you on that i think it's extreme really important and i think that you would be surprised to find how many people are looking for a resource like that. i, i if i can echo. some of what you're saying, victoria, we have in addition to the other things on our website, have produce a teaching guide. it was about texas annexation bias around some of the documents letters to and from fillmore that we'd worked on and that has been an extremely popular of the site, often viewed and know the 80 is through its educational resources site has shared that the national archivist shared it on social media and i've a big goal of the blog and our outreach in general is to to let people know we're doing but not to stop their hope hoping that some of these who can use them will move on to look at the documents that we've edited and published. so i mean, i try to include documents or portions of them as many of those entries as i can. and although i'm not part of it, so i'm not the best person to speak about it, i know that the association for documentary editing has been really trying step up its efforts in education or outreach. so the education committee as well as the university of virginia laboratory system have been trying to really expand educational and information they offer both to documentary editors themselves and more broadly to teachers and students. i was just going to i'm new to addie and i'm a little confused as to what our mission we are documentary editors. we deal with contact to become subject matter experts. but are we journalists are we the do we create speakers as we are the subject matter experts this and through our vehicles that we're using to reach the mission of each individual project, do we say the organizer? what what is is the mission of the organization to perpetuate what the members doing and develop a relationship with other organizations like the council for the social studies, or to even use common core specification for k-through-12. how to as an organization? what are we are we use as a subject matter expert on the presidential papers do you come the law school and say hey, this happened then the 1700s, 1800s. let's bring it into current times do we impact law? do we start advocating for change or i mean what is where do we go? we have such in this room, such amazing subject matters. no one knows i'm telling you honestly, no one really knows what we're doing. so relationship building is very important. the national for the social studies would jump out of relationship with the a.d. as an organizer and as a pipeline to put historical context on what our kids need to learn. so i'm still and i'm grasping, trying to understand what what is our role here, your role updating, your blog on a regular basis as a journalist as a citizen journalist, as a historian or as a scholar? i mean, do we have those defined lives or there gray areas. so i'm just speaking out loud because i'm listening to all these statements about your incredible projects and it relates to the world and the bigger picture. but what does this organization do to help us bring all this insight to the larger world? well, i just want to say thank you so much for that wonderful circulation of ideas and so i'm serenity sutherland for on duty you might not know and i'm going to soon be the president of the organizations i feel compelled to answer question i. i think that there's more that can be said here. but i want to direct people to the purpose statement we have as part of our constitution on this website. and i'm just going to read certain sections of it because i think that's really to answering this question. and there's could certainly be more conversation about what our purpose is. but we have now that our purpose is to support, facilitate and promote the creation and use of edited texts and other acts of recovery through cooperation and exchange. we also say that our our primary source material of texts, cultural artifacts that we're trying to reach editors, teachers, students, interdisciplinary scholars, librarians, our archivists and others. so mean. so think about that. i mean, do have all this great expertise. and to think about who are audiences is is summed up pretty well in the purpose statement. but i think how to do is kind of the question that we're talking here a simple one on our membership list. if we put the url of, each person's each each member subject, then we members can look at each other's stuff and help promote it and do some cross-referencing. that's a great idea to also people to to the ila elaborates his website which michael mentioned which does things like that as well. so i just wanted to jump in and say i think this is a great conversation, direct people to the website and if you're really interested in solving these problems and answering these questions, please see me because i have many committees that i could be on and we can do this work. so thank you. for years i've been hoping that our every time we have a conference that we have people from other organizations there so that everyone there can know like you can work in the goldman hour or elizabeth cady stanton and someone who's a more straight historian can give paper on at someone who works with students, can give a paper on that just so that we have some of our in public. what do you think also just reflecting on what samantha chang said a minute ago, i i think it is important, but you have to draw these connections and to remember what we are and what we are. and so, i mean, i, i, i would say really i am not a journalist. i am not a high sch

michael smerconish. michael the letter that jason was just talking about in his piece, urging harvard not to fire their president in the wake of what happened at penn, two points, resisting political pressure and that outside forces are involved here, do you think that's the case? this has moved far beyond what happened in a hearing room. >> i think it has moved well beyond that hearing room and let me say the obvious, all three of them, they flunked. they were tone-deaf, they wrapped themselves in their answers in the first amendment without expressly saying so, providing some context what they say was actually legally correct, they never explained that, what they should have done, a condemnation of hamas and antisemitism, a condemnation of any talk of yen side and then put their reflection in some form of context. if you look at five hours of testimony, you can find them saying that. bottom line, i don't think any of the three should be ousted for this alone, if there's more to their record let's have that. >> liz magill at penn there was more to her record specifically on this issue. i thought your interview yesterday on your show, saturday on your show was illuminating, you got into what the first amendment means and where the bounds are the first amendments. it applies differently between private and public institutions. do you think they were too lawyered up? >> absolutely. poppy, they're well educated. they're usually good communicators. each of the three of them. i suspected and said and it was confirmed over the weekend by "the new york times," that perhaps they were prepared by the same law firm and two of the instances that was the case. behind closed doors they were doing a murder board going over the different questions, but given bad advice if terms of talking about context and talking about speech versus conduct, instead of saying as rabbi said, slam that table and condemn all of this and then explain some of the confines of your position in view of the first amendment. the rules and regulations adopted by each of these universities has the first amendment in mind. it's complicated. it gets reduced to a soundbited a for that they're paying a price. >> as an attorney can you explain that to our viewers? because there are limits to the first amendment. jewish students or arab students, muslim students walking around campus feeling threatened, feeling intimidated, the question is, where is that line? >> right, let me begin by saying, those students also believe that other minority groups are receiving more attention, more protection and their rights, particularly jewish students, have been cast aside, you mentioned other events at the university of pennsylvania, preceding the hamas attack on israel, was the palestinie ian writes, marked a literally festival but some saw it as cover as anti-israel -- when that speech now becomes conduct, when it becomes harassment, in somebody's face, intruding on the rights of others, then all of a sudden you're afforded far less rights. that's what they were trying to get to, context, if i'm pro-life and i show up at a planned parenthood facility and i believe there's genocide being conducted behind those walls and i start shouting and holding a sign and saying, stop that genocide, that may be appalling speech viewed by many but it's afforded a certain level of protection, these are very complicated issues. in front of the lights of congressional hearing, elise stefanik asking those questions, she has an agenda, they came out on the losing side and they flunked. >> michael, we appreciate it. thank you. >>> in just a few hours, jury selection begins in rudy giuliani's civil defamation case, brought by the two georgia election workers that he lied about what to expect, next. >>> the texas woman granted an emergency order to get an abortion had that blocked, waiting for another order to terminate her pregnancy. we'll be joined by her attorney, stay with us. i'm a little anxious, i'm a little excited. i'm gonna be emotional, she's gonna be emotional, but it's gonna be so worth it. i love that i can give back to one of our customers. i hope you enjoy these amazing gifts. oh my goodness. oh, you guys. i know you like wrestling, so we got you some vip tickets. you have made an impact. so have you. for you guys to be out here doing something like this, it restores a lot of faith in humanity. >>> welcome back. next hour jury selection will begin in civil case against former trump attorney rudy giuliani. this is now to determine the monetary damages he must pay t

michael mallos. michael, great to help you with those. um, now i'm show you heard that and these random minutes, the officer said that the idea should completely destroy the gaza strip noise is simply part of the wall of woods by a military officer engaged in combat or so what should we be troubled by this? well, i think we should very much be troubled by this because it actually reflects the opinion and, and, and the policy of the netanyahu government, they want to make that entire area uninhabitable. the site with the west bank they want by that i mean they want to push all palestinians out and they don't care where they go. they just want the land for their own settlements and, and, and for their own radical notions. what i saw in those pictures from f t was the devastation turned them out to what i saw in comp or after world war 2, and also style and graph. uh it just total devastation. and that's their point to making uninhabitable with the fact that they're, they're flooding some areas reported late, will make it totally on a habitable, they won't be able to have any agriculture. they just don't care. it's right, this is their policy. we have rabbis who are talking about killing the children, you know, because the palestinian children because they were hooked all the homeless. i mean, they just equate all tell us that he is without me. and this is this, this is just mind boggling. and it's insane with his apologies for insults i'm just gonna jump in that by color and play devil's advocate. it's a bit a bit. so i guess is, i would say that is, is defending is national security in lights of those a trusted fees that were committed on october the 7th. but when you see what's happening to i get the sense that you believe that this response is disproportionate. so what happened 2 months ago to michael did, did you, did you hear the question? yes, i thought you were going to play something. ok. sorry. yeah. i it is. it is disproportionate . you have 1200 versus 20000. that's an unspeakable. that's. that's the ludicrous. and it's not just to, for the security. yeah. the, the, to the 2 state solution indeed is uh, uh, knowledgeable right now there is no question about it from the, from the perspective of the, of the administration of, uh, yahoo, i had, i came across an interesting article recently from harass. it's a joyce newspaper dating back to 2011. and what's that talk openly about the possibility of layman's wrong? now that's in german nazi term for clearing up the people who are not like them and, and so that they can have their own areas in it. i don't see and it's a part time, it's and, and now they're on top of that, they're adding this many depths well with, without any discrimination. so the, the, the destruction that i saw in those photographs show a, a carpet bombing in
