parkinson's disease. the findings you are from a survey by the michael j. fox foundation. rrell joins us live. tell us about the study. a lot of people will say, wait, didn't we know there was a link here? >> absolutely. >> parkinson's typically affects the people over the age of 68. what was really known is there was an association between extreme contact sports like boxing and parkinson's. they sought to see if the association was also with football. 700 of the studied, what they found, people who had played football had a 61% higher risks of parkinson-ism, which is the movement or tremors that can make movement difficult. that was a pretty significant finding in this study, brianna. >> that's huge. 61% increased risk. what didded study find . >> it did find the higher left of play for football, both were played for higher risks. if you played at least five years or more, that doubled your risk. playing at a higher level made you three times more likely than the youth or high school level, which makes sense. is the longer you play, it probably makes sense. >> and also jus

parkinson's disease. that study was sponsored by the michael j. fox foundation for parkinson's research.found athletes who played organized tackle football were at a 61% higher risk of being diagnosed with parkinson's disease. researchers stress these findings are preliminary. other risk factors are also at play. now. fox medical teams doctor mike joins us now to talk about this study. very concerning, doctor mike. a lot of research put towards this, a lot of concern about playing football. what are some of the steps that can be taken to protect a player from developing a neurological condition like parkinson's. well, pam, when you look at this amazing organ called the brain, all right, it's enclosed in the skull and what happens is when you have trauma, as we see often in things like boxing, football, even soccer, when they head the ball, you you have a lot of damage that goes on in this very delicate organ. and so many people in contact sports are looking at how we can reduce the risk of this trauma that as you just said, can lead to things like parkinson's. so number one, the study ki
