he is michael pillsbury, director of the chinese strategy at the hudson institute. michael , how do we get here? well, the chinese are suspicious of us , brian ,na and they think that the oneco china policy is going toof be modified to get a number of reasons for that. the one china policy was supposed to sort of prevent any u.s. defense of taiwan. we couldn't store ammunition there. we couldn't have any armed forces of cn't o our own there. wela couldn't do war planning.we they couldn't do joint military exercises. as part of the one china d policy, we shut downow our defense command on taiwan. all this is 40, 50 years ago. it's starting to shift now. the congressss is very angry tht taiwan is kind of a sitting duck. there's no real d deterrence power and so basic military common sense tells a lot of people in congress we can't have this one china policy be so inflexible. we've got to mount a defense ofi taiwan because of china'sve threats over the last two or three years. that's the crux of the matter.la nancy pelosi has not declared herself on . if she goes and ta
