bush who set the agenda through two thousand and eight in two thousand and three bush appointee michael powell tried to consolidate the media even further and wrote rules that matched the times if they got away with what they wanted to do you can end up in a community where you have one large corporation controlling the daily newspaper radio stations television stations the cable outlet in one community their profits would go through the roof i mean if it's stripped down to one newsroom without any competition or you tell me that that sounds like the mockery it didn't look good three of the five members of the f.c.c. a republican they were all pretty much on record as saying even before we consider any evidence we want to get rid of these rules or they go in their marching orders but the public found out and rose up against the us we understand we got about three million people to weigh in to the f.c.c. that's almost you know one of every one hundred americans i don't even think that many people knew there was an f.c.c. the law and how to get their information to us but they did they were real

michael powell under george bush and this report is suggesting that that report not be concluded but the proceeding just they basically shuddered and at the f.e.c. not proceed to adopt any sort of recommendations in regard to how to make stations more responsive to their local communities to what extent is that the. problem is probably the wrong word but a lack of better one is that the problem versus the telecommunications act of ninety six versus reagan's decision in one thousand nine hundred two to stop and force in the sherman act which led to the war mergers and acquisition mania which spilled over into the media right i mean they're all related the problem with the antitrust lack of enforcement for the last several decades is that we do have the f.c.c. also approving mergers there are two bodies of radio mergers like the merger that are before the commission now like the f.t. it's like the comcast n.b.c. merger that was approved earlier this year yes he has a separate mandate not only to ensure that there is competition in local media markets but that the local media is serving

then after the bush administration took office, and michael powell became chair of the f.c.c., therecame a new fine for a censored version, a cleaned-up version, a bleeped version of the real slim shady. then after people like you spoke out and said this is insane, they decided they weren't going to fine the radio station after all. what's going on there? well, i don't want to guess what they're thinking. i can only say that they didn't have any good legal right to stand on their ideals, and so they had to drop 'em, from what i can tell. that, i can assume, and i think that they were a little bit aggressive, and they--and they decided against their choice, and i think that it was going to be obvious that it was cultural, and since it's going to be cultural, and we're going to attack black kids for their language and culture, then we have to be careful how we do it, and so that was not a good vehicle to attack our freedom of speech because it was going to play out badly for them in the media and other places. they will pick better shots, but they will continue to take shots at us and
