here now is former pentagon adviser michael rubin michael rubin, is he going to survive? is mohammad morsi going to survive this? >> i think he probably won't survive. this he's a gambler but he's a very bad gambler. the situation he set up is this. when he passed his decree calling for his own dictatorial powers he said they would only last as long as there was no constitution. then he presented the egyptian people with a constitution which was much more extreme than he had promised. and so he kind of figures you either take me as a dictator you take this constitution. what the egyptian people are saying, none of the above. we want plan c. >> that's the thing. the constitution, this referendum, is not that good. it has much more muslim brotherhood. it has much more dictatorial powers. it has much more shirea law than economic and legal and moral freedom, michael. that's what it seems to be. i don't see morsi retreating from that. >> you're absolutely right on that. look, it's no surprise the muslim brotherhood and islamists won the sweeping election at first because they

michael rubin, let me start with you.hink is the best way to respond to maintain influence but, you know, not turn over weapons to people who will use them against us or our allies? >> first of all, we have to underrtand that egypt shouldn't be too-big-to-fail and that american weaponry and american taxpayers assistance shouldn't be entitlement to fundamentally increasingly ostile reg emgood. that said, i think we should slow roll it. i'm less sanguine than judy about the egyptian military. most americans know our generals as warfighters. most egyptians don't really know their generals for their heroics in the battlefield. the egyptians never won a war. they know their generals as businessmen first and foremost. what i see the egyptian military doing right now seeing which side, either mohammed morsi or people on the street will cut them a better deal because i'm not so sure that the egyptian's military interest is anything other than their bank account. melissa: judy, what is the best play here? >> i understand what mich

here is former pentagon adviser michael rubin. >> thanks for having me, michelle. >> what should thete house do in response to this? >> ultimately, what with will have to be inspected and considered is the whole nature of the reset policy. if we trace the beginnings of this crisis back it actually started with the white house reaching out to vladimir putin to russia in supporting russia's accession to the world trade organization. the amendment which had govern the a lot of u.s.-russian/soviet relations going back to the 1970s had to be replaced. it was replaced in congress by the act which set russia's worst human viets violators there should be consequences when it comes to getting visas. vladimir mute indecided to lash out to the united states by pointing a figurative rifle at the head of russia's orphans. >> we improve russia's trade relation with us, officially and then he gets upset because buried within there is a little clause that says, as you point out, the worst human rights violators should have trouble getting into the united states. how far should we go, throw, right? i

with me now is michael rubin, resident scholar at the american enterprise institute and a happy new yearyou, sir. what does it mean for the united states? does it up the ante or is this more bravado from the iranians? >> certainly, adam, we need to take iranian bravado seriously. they are sabre-rattling, when it comes to the military tests there are photoshop warriors to be attached but the iranian arms industry is becoming more lethal and indeed they're getting a lot of help, not only from countries like north korea, but also from countries like belarus and perhaps even russia. adam: do we know for a fact this test really took place and it was successful or are they plain out lying? >> we don't know that yet because in the past sometimes the tests have been exaggerated but remember, the iranians can learn just as much from a failed test as they can from a successful test. but what we do know is this. the iranians have been expanding beyond the strait of hormuz. they have established naval bases on the indian ocean, the sea of oman. they have sent ships up through the suez canal. and the

michael rubin, iranian expert used to work at the pentagon.he american enterprise institute. thanks for coming on the show. >> thanks for having me. melissa: do you think they will be successl in this? do you think sancons aimed at ending flow of gold into iran will really work first of all? >> sanctions itself isn't going to reverse the determination of iran to, get a nuclear weapons capability. but what we're doing is applying increasingly amounts of pressure on iran and about a year ago t senate voted 100-0 to impose banking sanctions on iran and there is very little from which we can get such bipartisan unty. what happens is iran started sending oil, sending gas to turkey in exchange for gold and so what the cop guess is doing now, again with the unanimous vote, the senate, that is, is to try to plug this last hole. if precedent is to be believed it will increase pressure a huge amount. melissa: but you know turkey wants that natural gas. that is why they're paying in gold. so i mean how realistic is it that we can actually stop them from
