michael shaw. the race tightening up a little bit there between the remaining candidates behind truch at least. what's the news out of mich? -- donald trump. >> reporter: the margin that donald trump won by, but you have to look at the fact that john kasich who has been surging both the national polls and those here in michigan did find a way to finish in second place. he called it that he will finish in second, particularly counting on money here favoring john kasich in that race. i think that we cannot talk about the republicans tonight without mentioning the fact that it could be amarco rubio does not get one single delegate tonight. if he doesn't get a delegate it means that he will leave here headed into florida next week without winning a delegate tonight. that's big news. >> i will get michigan because we're going to bring the car industry back. we're going to take it back to michigan. it is never even a question. when that's candidates are talking a question, it's not a question. michigan i

is al jazeera's chief political correspondent michael shaw. let's start with this big win for cruz in kansas. first off, is it a big win? >> yes. any win is a big win when you're ted cruz, obviously. i would say it is, and also because of how decisive you are. any time when you're not losing to donald trump, it's a big win. if you look at all of the delegates up for grabs today, they totald exactly as texas. in total it's a lot. i think ted cruz recognises that and gives him another win, which means marco rubio isn't and it means donald trump isn't >>> with donald trump there do you think he has been hurt at all by what has happened this week, this uprising against him from the g.o.p. establishment? >> it is a good question. hard to say. i think the greatest indicator of his being hurt is a small poll that was released today in the state of michigan. it was taken yepped and today-- yesterday and today. it shows john kasich ahead by 2 percentage points over donald trump in michigan. he has a margin of error by five. in terms of answering your q

going to detroit where al jazeera's michael shaw has the latest on the michigan primaries. the democratic race neck and neck looking better and better for bernie sanders and that is certainly something the polls didn't come anywhere close to predicking. >> reporter: no. as a market of fact, this is probably if bernie sanders wins here in michigan, which he is likely to be the winner mere, a lot of the vote that isn't counted yet is in wane county and most of that in detroit city. those votes have gone 16% to hillary clinton, by 16% to hillary clinton and in detrait even more. there are not enough votes probably left to count in order to make up the deficit that she has in this. this could be a big surprise with the exception of donald trump's success all year long. the biggest surprise of all the nominating contest. we look at this and we see that the united auto workers who really liked bernie from the beginning came around the other night after that debate, perhaps, but also after these private sector unions never warmed to hillary clinton on those trade issues. that is m

we will bring michael shaw in electric from the marco rubio headquarters which looks like an empty room. this was designed in some of the states after met romney had to limp over the line. the republican sat around in its post-mortem after the last election saying if we have someone a front runner early on, we want to protect them and make sure they're not open to attacks. that has come back to bite the republican party. >> that's exactly right. what they were trying to do was talk about an incumbent president romney which they were expected to have. if you look at these states, how it's frond loaded, the-- front loaded, the thresh holds to be met. that's perfectly designed for a candidate who would be the choice of the party, as would be an incumbent president which they were hoping we on would have the president going through all the states tonight. it didn't do that. it back fired. you talk about him limping towards the nomination. it sucked a lot of air out of the party. it was a lot of back and forth. they said they didn't want to do that. four years later you're here having the sa

donald trump way ahead >>> going to michael shaw in utah. we won't know for a while who has won. it wrapped up. it is a state where there is an interesting play where republicans are doing to try and stop donald trump. >> reporter: that's exactly right. this is so of the birth place of the blueprint of the stop trump effort. over my shoulder you see precinct chairs bringing their caucus results to the main lobby here where those ballots will be counted and reported. they're counted in the caucus rooms as well. it's very interesting. you have rinse saying that if donald trump-- republicans saying that if donald trump is the republican i will vote democratic. there are lots of interesting dynamics here. utah is the home to 63% of the mormans. it is very power and not what you would think of in terms of the conservative movement here. they are to the left of most republicans on issues and certainly donald trump on issues of immigration and interacting with muslims i spoke to a lot of voters here today. a lot talked about why it was important and why they were here to vote against do
