joining me now is correspondent michael shure. tera and o'brien murray. thank you for being here. first of all o'brien, do you think this is going to be--the president will spend much time talking about foreign policy and terrorism. we have some numbers but i don't see this as being much of a speech. j. >> this president has been a failure in foreign policy. >> a failure? >> when you look at russia and the middle east, he will want to bury it. >> russia's economy seems to be collapsing. >> he's too late on isil. he should have been out there a year ago teeth, and at least he does not know how to negotiate. jobs and the economy are the issue that americans care about. healthcare as well. they're not happy with the healthcare situation give this president. >> tera, do you want to dive in, then michael we'll get to go. is this likely to be a speech about the economy right now? >> absolutely. to everyone's point the americans care mostly about jobs. that's not new news. it's not breaking news. despite the fact 2014 was the best job creation this century. we have this stop burn inequal

for how all of this place out politically, we turn to al jazeera's political correspondent mike michael shure is this a wise strategy for the president to signal essentially war? >> well you talk about the politics david, and what mike viqueira said is right, there is no chance this is going to passite ever house of congress. but this puts the republicans in a position to defend the wealthy. going into 2016 that's not where they want to be it was a formal that didn't work for them before, and we have talked much much more in the past few years about income and equality and that is going to be in the forefront of the election. >> in the polls the president's approval rating is starting to tick up as more as more americans start to think maybe the middle class haven't seen their wages go up but other areas are getting stronger. >> what the white house, the president and the candidates who will be running for the presidency need to do is to find a way to articulate that. 61%, largely it is even higher than that only 8% of the people in the poll said they felt it a great deal they felt the econom

i spoke to michael shure, al jazeera political correspondent, about what is to come. >> his popularity is steady climbing a bit not in the zone that you want. the caucus the democratic caucus in the house is tight. in the senate it is tight as well. a silver lining of one of the democratic senators. a lot were considered the conservative type center. they are not there to mess with the caucus trade things off so the republicans can get their votes. we know the votes are there, and where the democratic votes are. it will be tough for the republicans now, because of the president's veto. >> correspondent michael shure. immigration issues are included as part of a bill that funds the department of homeland security. general motors will unveil a concept version of a car. it's been in the works for years and designed to last 200 miles on a single charge. the price tag is around $30,000. it's the same as nissan's electric car. the car only goes about 100 miles per charge. >>> offing -- of course with the price of gas dropping people may decline to buy electric cars. prices dropped 27 sent ov

for more we bring in al jazeera political contributor michael shure. michael, members of the obama were on the morning talk shows pointing out similarities between the president's plan and the 2014 bill from the g.o.p. how do we expect this to play out? >> it's exactly what they would want to do is go through and show how there are so many similarities to what republicans propose to the president when trying to make a deal. it doesn't go into detail about what the democrats want at that time. it's not going to play at all. this is the first salvo of the 2016 presidential campaign this is defining his party, and the rhetoric of his legacy in terms that separate the middle class from those in the 1%. it's the same - you know in the week we here mitt romney may run for presidency it's the same narrative, the president is bringing it to capitol hill because he doesn't have to pay electoral politics. >> it sort of feels like ground hog day for you as well. >> it does. >> look at the tax proposals and what he wants to do in terms of ley form. -- reform. he w

michael shure, political correspondent, is life for us. what is the freedom summit? who organises it? what is it about? >> it was organised by citizens united. i think you heard of them and steve king the congressman from iowa, the conservative congressman from iowa was looked at as a kick-off to the 2016 election getting all the conservatives to iowa and activists from the 99 countries in iowa together in des moines to hear them out. >> tell us about the memberable moments. i understand there's a few. who were the big winners and losers. >> the big winners in this correspondent's opinion, were the people that did not show up there. mitt romney didn't go marco rubio didn't go among others. in fact the people that were there, i would say scott walker came away as impressive. what he does that a lot don't know is he can talk the conservativelingo and put himself in with the mad rate or centralist republican establishments. scott walker was quite good. the wisconsin governor. sarah palin gave a stem wiper leaving a lot -- stem winder leaving a lot curious as to what she

michael shure is with us. your thoughts on the news that saudi arabia's king abdullah has passed. >> it's a complicated relationship but a long-standing relationship through the white house, through the presidencies. one thing that we're not talking about is what a good customer saudi arabia has been to our defense department in terms of buying our aircraft and munitions. they've done that with us and the united kingdom. not to mention the politics of it. jeb bush, his family was very tight with the saudi royal family and jeb bush all but running for president right now. because of that i think that the saudi relationship will come into play in 2016 in a way that it hasn't. they tried to sell themselves as progressive and, indeed, they were more progressive than their neighbors. and they bought their way out in a sense as we heard in that last report of having to go towards democracy completely by appeasing their people with infrastructure and rebates as it were, on taxation. it's a complicated country and an

john. >> michael shure was inside the house chamber to watch the president's speech. what were your thoughts? >> my thoughts, the republicans came out of their retreat this weekend in pennsylvania, a sweet place with lots of high hopes coming in to talk about reconciliation ways that they might and ways that we won't. the president took that from him. they are now going to have to retreat in their own way to say come together themselves. this patch work as libby just talked to us with her conversation with steve king. the republican's need to assist what issues they are coming with a plan for and not just send him things to veto. he seems keen to vote tee those things. >> where does he go from there. >> we can talk about the style potential. i don't think you can arc with the fact that the president made a good speech, well delivered and well received by everybody. the question is what's going on? is president obama laying down negotiating conditions to soak the rich and redistribute wealth? are republicans just satisfying their base putting together abortion bills an

let's wrap this up with michael shure.s we look to the next big political event in washington you are fears of an imminent terrorist attack in europe. and there is the sensitivity over discussions over iran's nuclear arms and then the issues of cyber security. how does this all play out leading into the state of the union? >> well it just shows that you can't write that speech -- you can't wait long enough to write that speech david, because so much of what will be discussed is going to hinge on what happened in the past couple of weeks from the sony hack to the paris bombings to what is happening daily as we speak. so-so much of this is going to be incorporated into that speech but i don't see the president laying out plans other than to say they are sharing intelligence et cetera and the important part of what was said today in the white house was about iran as far as the way he addresses the american congress. i think he is going to talk about how important it is to put things on hold let these -- these talks work thems

let's bring in our political correspondent michael shure, did you see this coming? >> in a way did i. last night president obama or mitt romney responded to something that president obama aid over the weekend at the democratic retreat questioning the all of a sudden there was a conversation about poverty coming from a former presidential candidate today or last night. mitt romney responded to the president in a tweet saying, i care about poverty because you let so many people in poverty. something to that effect. here he is tangling a little bit. however, i didn't see after romney started flirting with the idea of running for president, i didn't see a ground swell of support. i didn't see people excited within the republican circles. one republican i know said that they were afraid he was, in fact, going to run. i'm not surprised. i was surprised that it happened this morning but that's about it. >> do you see romney throwing his support behind another candidate? i heard traumatic about him being a king maker. i don't know what that means any more? >> well, if you c

i spoke to al jazeera political contributor michael shure, about the tax proposals and what president obama processes to do in terms of financial reform. >> he wants to get rid of the trust fund loophole a cousin of the death tax. when it's called the trust fund loophole it sounds different, sounds like something you would want to support. to that end he wants to take into account that there are childcare tax credits and middle class tax cuts that would come out of that as well. when you look at the trust fund loophole you are looking at something that is hard to get behind for anybody running for office and certainly someone in congress to do that independent of itself. there is financial reform that has to come into play. that will come in terms of looking at the banks, and how much money the banks will be - banks with assets of $50 billion, will have to pay tax. these are strong fighting words, liberal fighting words and will not play in the republican controlled congress it's meant to have them say "hey we don't want to play like that." the republican response is said to be a smar

for more, i'm joined from chicago by bill warren and from los angeles, michael shure. jim, the president said veto pen is said to be primed and ready. the senate bill was five votes shy have a veto proof majority. is the president going to win this one? >> yes. should web concise? yes. rarely have so many fought so long so hard for so little. effective tools that were given both sides in the last year for at least fundraising, but on the policy grounds, the significance of this is far outweighed by the symbolic significance and ultimately, obama's got the votes. nothing will happen. >> is this a lose-lose for the president, if he doesn't veto it, he runs afoul of the democratic base especially environmentalists? >> in that case, it's not a lose-lose, probably a lose-win. it's something that the american people have moved past in a large way. even the voters of louisiana marry landrieu in trying to keep her senate seat in a run off tried to make this her last stand and she stood no more. i think the presidencies and finally came through with this. he wants the last word

. >> michael shure is in the chamber. what are you seeing? >> she has written letters to the president for the people sitting with her in the ghoulry playing off what we were just talking about if there is somebody getting a sort of leg up, it is ted cruz, yucking it up the entire time he's been in here. he's the first to iowa and that's an advantage to cruz. corey booker sitting with the republicans is sitting next to senator kelly a few away, the only democratic sitting outside of his party on the republican side. >> again i guess we want to think about what it's like for the president of the united states to sit in a house chamber that is solidly republican. >> since 1950, all of the presidents who have been sitting a second term is facing the other party giving the second state of the union address. going back to what david and mike were talking about, he was a senator and sat in that chamber and listened to the state of the union address and found himself as president. after talking so much about how a first term senator first junior sen

al jazeera america political correspondent michael sure shure joins me now. if money is a problem for running for president. i don't know why anybody would ever run for president. >> it's hard to believe that someone who is worth over a quarter billion dollars would cite money as the problem. but fundraising is different than the money you have in your own bank account. jeb bush with his excellent timing in announcing his run for the presidency and the formation of his pac took away of that power from mitt romney. the same people that they would both be going to. jeb bush had his opening fundraiser at the home of durkin in connecticut, a former romney backer. >> jeb bush has been on a 60-event so-called shock and awe tour. did that have some impact on mitt romney's decision? >> you know, listen, if romney was going to run for president there would be somebody running for him. the problem is the same acreage that romney carved out for himself is now the same acreage that jeb bush would move into. so a lot of what the space that let's say mitt romney would take
