. >> al jazeera american political correspondent michael shure joins me, on the road in montgomery alabama. good to have you with us. >> nice to be with you. >> why did ted cruz make a point of stealing a day's march on opponents, declare now rather than virginia, texas? >> i think a little bit of that is an imagery. he's at liberty university in virginia. that is a sort of the hallmark of ted cruz's political and campaign life. portraying liberty as his motto. it's only fitting that he would be there. he'll go on the road and do a little fundraising. he's going to new york and be over the country. he wanted to get an early start. a great place to get attention. >>> a poll from republican voters put ted cruise behind the presumed republican candidate. let's do a little calculus. first going on the favour and what is working against him. >> what has ted got going for him? >> what is going for him is rising name recognition. he doesn't have the recognition that some have. you remember huckabee won in iowa in 2008. he has a skill that is underrated and will be well seen, certainly in the prim

michael shure is live for us in los angeles. she has been listening to the news conference. i was struck by the fact that she did not say when asked directly that she made a mistake. >> yes, nor did she apologize del, which a lot of people were waiting for her to do. it also makes you wonder why did this not happen a week ago when all this came out, and one of the questioners said do you regret anything about this, i'm sure that's one of the regrets she has. but a lot of team will have problems of the whole idea of convenience. personally speaking, you can have a few different accounts on one device. the notion on this day and age that you could not have two devices, i don't know enough if the state department allows their e-mails to go to the same device as your personal e-mails but we're going to get to more questions, questions that were not answered here e and they didn't get into the legality of. this is hillary clinton saying this is the issue. we're putting it behind us and we want to move forward. she's held to a different bar. she said colin powell did the same thin

let's bring in our contributor michael shure. when it comes to politics and campaigns, everything is strategic, what is the significance of ted cruz's announcement at this time? >> part of it is getting name recognition out there. we who cover this all the time know who ted cruz is. doesn't mean anyone in iowa or new hampshire knows his name. also he needs to get a jump on fundraising. >> we have foster saying he'll open up. others are speaking up. he'll go after votes in state like iowa. he has to get out there early, now is early. he is the first one. i mentioned his conservative hard-line stance even within the g.o.p. party. what will he try to convince on his background. >> i think the fact that he is unbending in his conservatism is a good selling point in the early states. you look at joanie ernst. the special tea party representative running against obama and the tea party. he'll try to duplicate everything that joni ernst did in trying to win the race. she didn't have a great opponent. his work will be cut out for him >>>

michael shure is with us. the ap released this statement on the reasoning behind the suit. let's read it together. the associated press is taking the necessary legal steps to gain access to these important documents, which will shed light on actions by the state department and former secretary clinton during some of the most significance issues of our time. the state department is planning to post these e-mails, why is the a.p. suing? why not wait to see what the department actually posts? >> there are a few reasons for this tony, the chief reason is to be more expeditious. when government departments are under legal action they act much more quickly in terms of getting these things out. and also the scope of the associated press is asking for is wider. they want schedules. they want to me why special dispensation was given to people who worked for secretary clinton at the state department, presumably will be part of her campaign should they run for office. there are real reasons to have this lawsuit take place right now. the ap said they're the proxy for the people, the pr

michael shure is live for us in los angeles. here is the question. how bad are these subpoenas for hillary clinton. put this into context for us? >> well, the context is unchart unchartered waters. there is nothing bad if nothing wrong was done. the clinton people have 55,000 e-mails, but we don't know what other e-mails are out there because it's her staff which decide which should be sent to the state department. in the foreign relations committee they said we're going to do this. we have the majority, we can do that. they'll put it together in the house and see where it goes. but this does not help. you'll remember this was a kenneth starr independent investigation and found other things. if they go in looking for bengahzi and find other things, that's a bad day for the clinton clintons. >> have a listen here. >> former secretary powell has been out saying he did use personal e-mail. he did the same--not the same exact thing but had a personal e-mail that he used. secretary kerry the first secretary of state to rely primarily on his state.gov e-ma
