and i hear michael steele saying it was character that made him take a step away from the president asormer chairman of the republican party. how do you think character is driving these early voters that you just heard dnc chair tom perez believes are coming out more for his nominee than the incumbent president? >> i think it's all about character. i don't just mean the candidates. obviously i believe that joe biden -- get away. sorry, i have a cat on me. that joe biden possesses a far greater character, a man of dignity and esteem. i don't want to even begin describing donald trump's character. these numbers that chairman perez talked about, they're eye-popping. they get blurred together because they're so large. people are all sorts of things, but something that michael just said has been on my mind a lot, which is we talk so much about the 40%, the 35% that are entrenched for donald trump. i'll probably never understand that. i don't think any of the three of us or the folks watching at home are going to understand. but there are a lot of republicans like michael, and they don't wan

michael steele, let me start with you. we were talking about this in the last segment when you look inside our new nbc/"wall street journal" poll. senior citizens a big part of that is voters 65 and older. we have biden in this poll ahead by more than 20 points. well over 20 points. we've seen other polls, though, consistently now been putting biden ahead of trump with seniors. that would be a departure from the last 20 years of presidential elections in this country. what do you chalk it up to? >> well, i think there's two things going on here and one was highlighted by another number from your nbc poll that the president's temperament that biden is viewed more temperam t temperamentally and i think senior citizens, one, are dealing with most directly the impact of this pandemic. they are with the u.ones fallin ill and passing away and their the ones whose friends are passing away and they funeral. two, the most sense of what a president should look like and donald trump in that debate did not look like. >> i guess the op

i'm going to fall in between michael steele's incredible optimism and bart's pessimism. and it's nice to play goldty locks when you work on democracies in decline. usually i'm in bart's shoes, so this is good for me. let's just say, the election's happening. the election's happening right now. there's already been 6 million votes cast, probably more at this point. it's been open here and new mexico for a week, there have been opening day challenges, but so far we are mostly muddling through. however, that doesn't mean we will continue to muddle through. and the numbers are not looking great in terms of what americans are worried about. so more in common, which is a group that works against polarization around the world, they found that 71% of americans are worried about political violence in this election. that's an enormous number. a group of our best political scientists -- larry diamond, lee drummond, people who have been doing polling on american attitudes for years -- were so concerned about the findings on violence that they actually polled all a their numbers toge
