we have a ton of developing news let me bring in kaci hunt on capitol hill, barbara comstock, michael steel. one of the questions was what will the numbers be? we don't know, what are you hearing from inside of the room on how that vote went down? >> this was, of course a question and liz cheney could have required a secret ballot recorded vote. she didn't do that and it tells you just ho dramatically support for her in the house republican con for instance has shifted since 100 plus people voted to have her retain that position just a few short months ago. so it is likely that their sense was asking for the accurate ballot would have been a show of strength. she is trying to project that these willing to take them all on. she walked straight down the middle of the room past all of the males that were voting to take her out. while a lot of the questions have been in the context of who will be the next speaker of the house, cheney is clearly focused beyond that and as chatter increased about whether or not former president trump is likely to run for president again, she has her focus there.

joining me now to discuss, michael steele, former rnc chair and host of the michael steele podcast and tara palmieri, politico playbook co-author. you have known kevin mccarthy for a long time. who is this guy? what is motivating him, and maybe this is a leading question, will he do anything to get that speaker's gavel? >> well, that's kind of been the knock on kevin for quite a while within the caucus. he's kind of like the last man standing for the positions that he's held. much of the frustration of a lot of republicans in the caucus during that time. so, yeah, he's very ambitious and very calculating. as the sound bites you played showed. you know, he comes out on january 6th and says, yes, the president bears some responsibility. but then when he's asked about it later on he goes, well, he had nothing really to do with it, as he said. so he figures out just where the line is, and he gets right as close as he can to it without tipping the hand against him. in some sense he's a lot like donald trump. it is all about him. and i think that's one of the things that have rubbed folks in
