and it is my great g pleasure to welcome you to my good friend and colleague michael strain director of economic studies a widely polished scholar in many areas as the exceptionally broad and clear overview of the state of economic life. the actual conditions we face how those relate to those dark stories that we hear in our politics to the conditions americans havens experienced. it's fair to say that things are much better than politics and the critics of the market economy would suggest that we face risks but that mood are the most important it is a controversial thesis as a conservative i am resistant and being told everything is fine. but it is a very powerful argueof thesis. a thoroughly supported thesis in the book so to respond to the argument is one of the smartest social analyst and policy thinkers in washington. he is the chair and senior fellow of economic studies at the brookings institution director on the future of the middle class author of important how the american middle class is leaving everyone else in the dust and what to do about it. the format will be very sim

michael strain has been a clear, empirically grounded and irritatingly well-written book. i'm going to briefly outline areas of agreement and focus on areas i think are useful disagreement. what are the incentives for pessimism if we are overly pessimistic, probably. it is working for us in some way. i agree there is an overstatement on left and right and broad trends affecting us, the middle classes been killed says joe biden, american carnage as donald trump, etc. there is a bipartisan overstatement of the problem. wage and income growth to use michael's words have been solid. not spectacular but not stagnant. these used to be the right words. michael is right to split post-world war ii economy into these broad 3 phases, very strong growth followed by stagnation followed by more growth, not as strong. one of the problems in the postwar years, when you have an economy that is growing by 4% a year from 20 years, you get a lot of upward mobility, people getting better off and it seems to me that era of american history casts a shadow over all contemporary economic debate. t

he's university of chicago booth school professor michael strain is with us.policy studies director and david balin at citi private back our own diana olick and steve liesman is with us as well steve, let's get to you as well. your take on the numbers you had been looking for lousy numbers. here you go, you got them. >> reporter: yeah. astonishing. we talked about this with the panel, the market rallying on what are absolutely atrocious numbers here i got the philly fed index, which is down 56 if you are looking for a bright spot here, it's not down as much as the empire state was yesterday, which was down 78 prices paid falling suggesting inflationary impulse expectations also negative minus 30 employment down 46 new orders down 70 it's justone awful, terrible number after another able to do some quick calculations here. if i take the total of 22 million jobless claims over the past month or so since the 21st of march, you have an unemployment rate, potential unemployment rate, somewhere between 12 and 20% depending on how much of that moves over from unemplo

one of the world's oldest unions is feeling the economic strain — 10 million people are nowjobless in the united states of america. michael i don't think anyone can begin to have a policy for that. when the economy is being shut down piecemeal, remember that the federal response from the white house, two weeks ago, they were saying that we will be in a church for easter. now finally the penny has dropped, and they are acknowledging that this will go on for quite some time. the us are shutting down new york city, now the epicentre of the global pandemic, effectively shut down. it was going to be a moment of increased unemployment, but 3.3 million people filed unemployment claims last week. 6.6 million people in the weekjust finished, that is 10 million people. to me, it seems to me that this is a moral equivalent of the 1929 stock market crash. the stock market crash did not immediately cause the depression. several years went by while the big ripples went throughout the economy, ultimately with mass unemployment and banks collapsing. i think when you look at 10 million people filing for unemployment in a month, while we w

michael. very much so of course italy's health care system has been under enormous strain during this outbreak but it's just announced its 1st drop and the number of patients needing intensive care so let's go to francesca or tony who is in milan so francesca tell us the numbers out of italy. well the number of that you were given about the intensive care units are quite good as the new figures that are coming from italy that seemed relatively positive also for the fatalities 681 people died today and this is the smallest number and more than a week and also the new positive cases are less than 5000 today the increase is just a 4 percent daily base and it's in line with the past day so they the infections confirmed are 125000 since the outbreak. italy has reached the plateau or at least this is what experts are saying the curve is still slightly going after but it's going slower every day and it's almost flat after almost one month of lockdown. florida's are warning citizens not so leave their houses because the emergency is not over just a number to remember 80 doctors have died 5500 nurses a
