that i will get in here, after week six and your quarterback is struggling, you'd wish you had michael vick. dude is an athlete, point blank. debt paid, let him play. go vick. so, again, a lot of sides to this debate, really maybe just two major sides emerging. let's go to rick, a friend of ours on cnn saturday morning, where i normally am, but helping us out, our business and sports analyst on the phone to break it down. rick, good to talk to you here during the week, my man. let's talk about this michael vick, that great debate. let's talk about, first, what's the bigger headache for a team or the bigger risk for a team, is it taking a gamble on this guy who has been out of professional sports for two years? can he perform or is it a bigger risk in that i have to take everything that's gonna come along with him, the possible protests and the cameras and the questions coming? >> well, my good friend, all the tweeter and the bloggers are correct. you feel both ways. probably small market team is going to take them. who to knows yet, but buffalo, jacksonville, tennessee, nashville, charlotte

i think that there's a real issue here about michael vick. michael vick committed a crime.me. he's now trying to come back and get back into his game, literally, and earn a living. i think we ought to give him a chance to do that. he ought to have the opportunity. i can't help but remember a story that ran in the detroit newspapers a few years ago about a homeless man who lived in the train station and he had a dog. and they did a three-part series how this guy ended up being homeless. the paper had to run a fourth story because so many people wrote in asking, how can they help the dog? who was living with this homeless man in the train station? what about the homeless guy? so i think the animal aspect is important here. but there's a lot of other things that are also important. probably had as much to do with it as brain scans did. >> ron christie, do you ever think that this will ever leave michael vick in any way, shape or form? this is just something he's going to have to live with the rest of his life? >> i think the stigma of the crime he committed and the heinous nat

you know, when michael vick comes off the field, then talk to should kids, get into some communities where some dogfighting might still be going on. is anything in the works at all, michael? >> it's absolutely right. the humane society of the united states has grassroots programs in chicago and atlanta. we want to expand it to other cities. where we go to inner cities, we talk to young kids on the streets, we work with ex-dogfighters who have great credibility. we have pit bull training classes. we teach them that dogs should be friends, not fighters. and we've talked to michael vick, and we have let him know that we have these opportunities, that if he wants to plug in, if he wants to go around the country and do some real boots on the ground work, he'll be able to demonstrate to society, to the commissioner, and to others that he's serious about making a difference. >> has he said yes? >> he says that he wants to make a long-term commitment to these programs. and we're now working out the details for what cities and what timeline. >> okay. hopefully, you guys can work that out. let'

but now a week after michael vick finished his 23 month federal sentence. the national football league has conditionally reinstated the former star quarterback. according to the league's commissioner roger gay goodale michael vick will be allowed to practice, he will be allowed to play in the two preefn game that end the preseasons of the final two and play in regular season games starting in october. but today commissioner goodale said he will have to follow very specific guidelines. >> playing in the nfl is a privilege. we are held to a higher standard and it is not a right to be an nfl player. i think michael clearly understands that and his responsibility. and i think it's his opportunity now to earn the opportunity to get that privilege back again. shepard: well now the tough part for michael vick. find a team that will sign you. our senior correspondent eric shawn is here commissioner goodell, did he give an explanation why he did this. >> yes. it's simple. he wants to help michael vick not just get back on the field but to be a productive citizen aga
