michael brown was killed. some of those peaceful protesters as i understand it, got in the way of the looters and say, no, you're not doing this anymore. yes, victorm robbery where police released those still photos and then video michael brown stealing cigars, cigarellos is the name. the rain is picking up. there were people sitting behind me across from the ferguson police department. they've now gone inside. but what we saw overnight, was a confrontation between people who went into that ferguson market. and local people who stood between them and the market and tried to keep them out. we understand from a producer who was there a few moments ago, steve kastinbaum, says there was actually a negotiation between the people guarding and protecting that store. and the people who wanted to go in. and at some point, the men standing trying to guard it let them go in. now from what we understand, they have now dpeispersed. there was some fate that the store could meet the fate that the qt met a few days before. the police actually protected that store. we also know from our shimon prokupecz, that some store owners are taking that into their own hands

victor blackwell, cnn. >>> and grief and anger after a teen was shot and killed by police. the police chief says michaelcer before he was shot to death today but witnesses say the killing was unprovoked and they say he was unarmed. our affiliate has details. >> reporter: here in ferguson it's been a very tense situation all day. around 10:00 this morning police finally gave their side of the story. until then we only hopes that witnesses saw this shooting go down. police claimed michael brown asaumted a police officer. the officer that ended up shooting and killing him. they say there was a struggle inside the officer's vehicle, that michael brown was shot once by the officer. the officer then got out of the car and fired more shots, shooting and killing michael brown just a few steps away from his grandmother's apartment. now, there had been demonstrations all throughout the day yesterday. they continue outside the ferguson police department. in fact, they were going on while the press conference was going on. the crowd stormed the police didn't. they were so loud you could almost hear them over the po

michael brown should be criminally charged. stephanie elam is live for us. stephanie, what the are officials contributing the calm. is it the weather or folks are tired? >> reporter: i think it's both, victorook, less people showed up here last night. we did see they sort of came in waves and groups. at one point, a group was out marching in the cold like they had been doing over and over again. we went with them for a walk and they went to the ferguson police station about three miles away. when they got there, they embraced, did a circle, prayed. we did see people coming out. just a different tone that we saw. if you ask some of the protesters, if you ask the police, overall, it sounds like it was seen as successful on both sides. take a listen. >> these are really the brave. these young men are brave. they are freedom fighters. to me, it's refreshing to see young people get involved. with the movement because a whole nation to look and say hey, listen, it really is inequality in america and it's not supposed to be like that. >> we go back every night and look at the operational plan and see how we can make it better and do it better. part of that is, when we are out in the community and
