all right now to cnn national correspondent michael yoshida, he's live for us in steinhatchee, florida. michael, tell us about what you're seeing down there now that the sun is up, we're really starting to get a sense for how powerful helene was when it hit this part of florida, right in the big bend area in steen hatchie can see some of the debris that they've already started to pile together. >> all of this from last night's storm surge, this entire area was covered with pieces of dark. some boats that had floated up out of the water as well. and as we walk this way, this entire area was covered last night, we were a little further up the hill on higher ground, but we saw that storm surge come in and really where i'm standing right now, the water would've been above me. another perspective you can see these buildings here. the water was up to about the roof level so significant significant amount of money and now, as we look at the cleanup, i want to point out and you can see a doc that was in the water. it was way further up the hill. what's now been moved closer to the marina. that

i want to bring in cnn's michael yoshida, who is in new orleans as we speak, michael, please stay safe as you continue to bring us the news. what is it like where you are right now? >> laura? yeah, we're right here in the heart of new orleans, right by jackson square, who, for those who are familiar with it, very touristy historical spot. you can see the range for the most part led up, but we still have these strong wind gusts you talked about those power outages. you can see we have power here in the french quarter, but those outages starting to rise throughout the city, across the state, last check, we had more than 240,000 outages and looking across the city throughout the evening, i want to show you this. we've seen the businesses that decided to leave the slides up, the gwinn's down a little right now but they really been battered by this way. you could see some of the cables still hanging down as a result of those strong gusts we've seen throughout the evening. of course, it wasn't just the wind causing issues we've also seen that steady rainfall officials were warning about that

michael yoshida is live in new orleans outfront michael, tell me what you're seeing yeah the conditions really deteriorated at this point. you can see here in the heart of new orleans, we are right near jackson square, popular tours it's darya, strong wind, strong way at all, really picking up in the last 30 minutes or so thankfully, it seems those living here, those tours that were in the area the advice of officials as they are staying home, hunkering down because again, if we look right over to the side here, you can see the wind just whipping here in the french quarter for their part of new orleans. we're seeing power outages start to pick up across louisiana as the storm and its impacts really starting to be felt right here in new orleans. again, officials expecting this to still keep ramping up as the evening goes on, and that's why again, they don't i want anyone out thankfully, while we've been here, we've seen mostly first responders police doing their rounds, checking out people. but once these conditions get to a certain level, then they'll have to clear the streets it's as w

i want to go straight now to michael yoshida, who is outfront in steen hatchie, florida. and michael, what are you seeing right now? >> and erin can see the wind, the rain starting to pick up as a lien makes its way towards florida. you mentioned we're here in steen hatchie for some perspective, right on the steinhatchee river just beyond the point behind me that's where you end today and then the golf and that's why for this community. and those in taylor county, there's that concern of that storm surge so that 20 foot potential to put some of that in perspective for you, the owner of the marina here, i was speaking with him earlier today and he said during previous storms, floating docks like this one, when they get that surge, he's seen it raised these docks up with the water well above this metal pole. you see here, and then they just start floating away. so that's been a concern all along those high waters combined with those strong winds bringing down some of the trees we have in this area with those power lines is why we've seen the sheriff's office it's put out tho
