let's bring in the experts, michael zeldin used to investigate exactly these transactions for the government. jennifer and steven. michael let me start with you. legally, i don't see it, statute of limitations maybe on the civil side, fines, when you look at what's in this report by the times, what gives you pause? >> so you always have to, in these matters, make sure that you understand the difference between lawful tax avoidance and illegal tax evasion. you have to really parse these transactions almost transaction by transaction to see whether or not they were taking advantage of loopholes in the tax code or end running them in terms of legal evasion. what stands out to me the most is the valuations of these properties. for tax purposes, there was a low value set for the property so taxes paid were reduced. and when collateralizing for other loans and matters by which they sought equity, the value was inflated. that movement of value of property within a short period of time to me, reflects more on the evasion side of the leather than the avoidance side of the leather. >> there's somethin

. >> also with us is michael zeldin, a cnn analyst and form are prosecutor. michael, talk to me about the scope of this investigation. this is not related to mueller's investigation. who's driving this? >> well, it is and it isn't. it was brought, as carrie said, by a separate united states attorney's office, the eastern district of virginia. that was who brought the charges, gates and flynn. they've been very active in this counterterrorism/counter intelligence arena. it does recite in the indictment, in the information here, connections to concord and others that mueller did indict. and it charges them in the same way that mueller charged, which is to say a conspiracy to defraud the united states by failing to register as a foreign agent and interfering with the federal election commission. you have to look at the social media indictment, the hacking indictment and now these charges as all part of a broader conspiracy. these are the component parts of it. i expect they're not done looking at this organization and what it's wreaked havoc in the united states

with me, michael zeldin, legal analyst, former federal prosecutor and robert mueller former special assistantpartment of justice. good to see you. >> good morning. >> the justice department arresting elena alekseevna khusyaynova for interfering with midterms, is she potentially someone the mueller team would want to have access to to see if she was instrumental in the 2016 interference or is this an extension of the 2016 interference, meaning her dabbling with midterm elections. >> i think it is continuation of what we saw in the first social media indictment by mueller. in this indictment it is alleged that she was part of the conspiracy that started somewhere in the mid 2014 period, ran through the 2016 election cycle, and carried on into the 2018. so yes, to the extent there's information that the eastern district for virginia prosecutors, ones bringing the case, get that relate back in time to 2016 period which is mueller's mandate, then those officers will share information. >> and then talk about paul manafort appearing in court in a wheelchair, getting the date for his upcoming sentenc

joining me now, michael zeldin, former assistant to robert mueller at the justice department and a formeral prosecutor. michael, so they're preparing answers to the questions. what exactly does that mean? are they like sitting down with the president, pencil to paper at this moment? >> so i think there's a two-step process here. first is, they receive the questions and they, the lawyers, jane and marty raskin and perhaps jay sekulow, are crafting answers based on the documentation that they have already sent to mueller to make sure that which they sent and the answers to the questions are consistent. once they have clear answers to the distinct questions, then i think they go to the president because these are his statements. so he's going to be bound by them. so they'll need to make sure that the president is comfortable with what's being said. once that's all said and done, they'll send them back to mueller and mueller will review them to determine whether or not there are follow-up questions that need to be asked, new topics that need to be asked, or whether or not he's good with this

and cnn legal analyst michael zeldin. gentlemen, let's begin with the newest piece of all of this and these 29 counts he is now facing. walk us through. >> right. sought big thing here obviously with these charges he's being charged with crimes of violence that are based upon the federal civil rights laws prohibiting hate crimes. this is a hate crime. it's clear this is what the government is saying. that's how he's charged. 11 counts of obstruction of religious belief. 11 counts of use of firearm. there's other counts here. but the bottom line is he's now officially arrested, he's now going to face court. he's going to be seeing a judge in pittsburgh. whether it's tomorrow or monday that remains to be seen. but that's it. and this is all we really know right now because the other documents we usually get when someone is charged, like the criminal complaint, that has not been released yet by the u.s. attorney's office. and in that we'll learn a lot more once we get those documents which are going to be released tomorrow i
