>> hi michaela. the bluefin is a remarkable piece of technology.ger locator so we can listen below the surface. with the bluefin you're talking about getting down here and moving around. it's not listening at all. it's mapping by sending sonic signals and recording what comes back in an elaborate and fancy way. it goes about two and a half miles down and back and forth in a long, slow process and downloads all that data. when it works properly, when you get hit in the right position, it produces remarkable images of what the ocean looks like in that area. >> this is the thing that's so interesting that we've been hearing from the very beginning of the search that this is an inaccessible area and angus houston adding that this area is new to man. we know very little about it. >> it's like a lot of the deep ocean. there are many places we don't know a whole lot about. once you get down there you're in the deep ocean. that's for sure. in terms of depth, the general area we're talking about can be anywhere from 1.5 miles to, say, three miles, three-plu

>> reporter: good morning, michaela.al milley there talking about lopez being treated for psychological and psychiatric issues. and in fact, when you look at the details, we do know about him, after serving a tour in iraq in 2011, four-month tour, very short, he did come back and he was being evaluated for possible -- possible post-traumatic stress. that diagnosis had not been made. in fact, pts is something that can be difficult to diagnose. but he was undergoing that treatment for anxiety and depression. not clear with all of that how he did manage to buy a handgun. the issue really at hand here, for the investigators, are two things. the security procedures at ft. hood that were put in place after 2009, were all the standards met? but the second thing is, another soldier with a history of mental illness and possible post-traumatic stress. this is very sensitive for the military because the reality is, there is no direct link between post-traumatic stress and resorting to mass violence. soldiers are not ticking time bo

michaela pereira is off today. we are following breaking news that has been developing. at least 19 students and one adult have been hurt in the stabbing rampage in a high school in murrysville, pennsylvania, 15 miles east of pittsburgh. authorities say the suspect is a sophomore male, 16 years old. he is in custody. what he did, at about 7:15 this morning, a little earlier, he ran down the hall in the school with two knives attacking people. the injuries reported so far include stab wounds to the torso, the abdomen, the chest area and backs of some of the victims. we are told by doctors that some of the injuries are, quote, clearly life threatening. jean casarez has been following all the developmentings over the last few hours. for the latest we know. >> the latest we know is that three people are in surgery. two were in. one was being transported to surgery, clearly with life threatening injuries. let's start from the beginning. at about 7:13 this morning is when the initial call came in. classes don't start until about 7:30, 7:40. the doors had opened. students were

. >>> this is "new day" with chris cuomo, kate balduan, and michaela pereira. >>> welcome to "new day." it is friday, april 25th. 6:00 in the east. a pilot sent out a hijack alert on virgin airlines flight from australia to indonesia. >> it was all a miscommunication sparked by an unruly passenger. erin mclaughlin is live in perth, australia. erin, what more are we learning about what happened on this flight? >> reporter: kate, we understand the incident was caused by a disruptive passenger on board a virgin australian boeing 737 flight from bris bon, australia, to bali's main airport. there were those initial reports of a hijacking but that turns out not to be the case. virgin australia putting out a statement saying, at no point was the safety of the 139 passengers aboard that plane in question. now, by sheer coincidence a cnn producer was actually at the airport at the time the incident occurred. she described a scene that was actually far from chaotic. she said the plane was simply brought to the farther end of the runway.
