john, michaela?hat ferguson has had its share of economic, financial and employment issues. earlier this morning on "new day" we heard somebody there the activist community, one of the pastors of the church, we heard from him a short time ago voicing frustration that police didn't do more to protect those businesses. interesting jason, i know st. louis chief john belmar during his press conference early this morning, he said police tried to move their cruisers and other vehicles in an attempt to save businesses. did you hear anything confirming that on the ground? >> well, i can tell you this: the police were definitely more measured, that would be an understatement in terms of how they responded to people out here. i heard one law enforcement official last night simply say that once they saw so many people moving in and trying to cause so much damage that at one point they literally just backed off and let people do whatever it is they were going to do. i can tell you from being in this crowd, it wa

>> it's really wide ranging, michaela.d so many people willing to talk to me on the phone but afraid to get in front of a camera because they simply think there's going to be blowback. they're afraid protesters are going to come after them. some people saying that they're not worried but they're concerned about what's going to happen, they want to make sure that the schools stay open because in august the schools did close down for a week after mike brown was killed. they want to make sure their children are safe, making sure that they're able to get them to and from school is also a huge concern here. where other people are just saying that they are very concerned about the small businesses that are up and down these streets and whether or not they'll be able to conduct business and the safety of their own family and they're buying up groceries and planning to stay in their house until any potential unrest is over, michaela. >> they're caught up in the middle of it. steph elam, thank you so much. paul callan in studio, i

guy back to what michaela was asking. president, leaders in washington, you don't want to say too much while the grand jury is still making their decision. but at some point, wouldn't it help for a leader of that stature to say let's make sure this stays calm. >> well, they're going to have to make that decision in terms of what are the dynamics, in terms of what they have to consider from looking at things from 25,000 feet. for those of us on the ground in our respective communities such as myself and here in dekalb county, wonderful county, great leadership in county government, great citizens. we all have great relationships here with our local community. and in spite of having those good relationships, right now at this very moment what we find it incredibly important to do is to reach out and be planful and begin starting to think about going forward, how do we improve those relationships in light of whatever happens in ferguson, whatever that outcome may be. we've got to be talking to each other and we've got to be

john and michaela?'s the big question is how soon could we be expecting this grand jury decision to come to be released? >> you know, it's so hard to say i can tell you the rumors are rampant. i am literally getting calls every other day from people saying "we hear today's's the day and here's why" and we have to tell them hold on a second hoorkser's what the prosecuting attorney's office is saying. and what they have been saying is it could happen any time from mid to late november so this weekend is mid-november and obviously through thanks giving that's the time frame that we've been given and certainly people are on pins and needles and to speak to that there has been statements put out by suspects of schools who are saying -- asking the prosecuting attorney's office to announce this when school is not in session. they have asked the prosecuting attorney to try to make that announcement, for example, on a sunday so that it does not disrupt the school buses and the parents trying to get their childre

i'm michaela pereira. >>> we start with breaking news. a cyber breach to the tune of three million customers. who is it? u.s.ps. let's bring in our cnn justice reporter. i don't know that people might equate the usps with a cyber breach, but it's happened. >> michaela, this one is pretty big. it affects not only 2.9 million customers but also 750,000 postal service employees and recent retireers. the postal service is acknowledging the breach. they're not providing a lot of details but they're notifying their customers today, they're notifying their employees today that their information has been compromised. for the employees and the recent retir retirees, this includes their social security numbers. so this is pretty sensitive stuff. so now they're going to have to get credit monitoring paid for by the u.s. postal service. customers can start calling around to see if their data has been affected and what they need to do for help. >> evan, at this early stage, any idea who might be behind this breach? >> not yet. the fbi and homeland sec

i'm eager to see your film, michaela.it's obviously asking all the right questions. >> a lot of us are anxious to see it, especially those of us with student debt lingerng in their lives. how do you help students and parents navigate this question of whether college is right for them? what do you advise? >> you asked how we got here. it's no great mystery. first of all, people were told that a college degree was almost essential for success in life. it was heavily subsidized by the federal government. colleges tended to pocket the money and keep raising the price and no one was keeping score. there was no means of telling whether a given diplomat from a given school was worth it or not. here at purdue, we've sided that's just not acceptable. we froze tuition last year and this year. it will be frozen again next year. we reduced the cost of room and board. the all-in cost of attendance at purdue has gone down the last two years, first time since those records were kept. on the other hand, we're investing heavily in rigorou

>> yes, michaela, john, good morning. they've not released the name but we are learning more about this man. he's described as a 50-year-old white man who lives in austin, texas, and it was a really dramatic scene just after 2:20 local time there in texas. here's how they described this happening. they say the first calls came in at about 2:22 this morning of a man shooting at the new federal courthouse in downtown austin. they say there were also shots fired at the mexican consulate building. also at the austin police department headquarters which we're told has suffered extensive damage. we're expecting to see pictures of that. also the shooting went on for 10 minutes until, we're told, there was an austin police sergeant who was securing the horses from the mounted unit who, with one hand was holding on to the reins of the horses and with the other hand fired a single shot in the direction of this suspect. now, the police chief says that it will take the work of the medical examiner to determine if that single shot too
