michelle: absolutely. unfortunately, a lot of it is driven by assessments that are required in certain states and schools. if there is an assessment required at the end of the school year that will cover content, teachers are required to cover that. let's say you are required to cover 100 years of history during the school year. it is on u.s. history in the 1800s. you could spend all year on the civil war and not cover it as adequately as you would like. you could do it well, but you would have neglected covering other content areas that may be on the test. so there is that pressure to go quickly through that kind of thing. that's the challenge. often, they are right. it will crowd out deep analysis of primary and secondary sources. there is a real tension there. what i have found in some areas is going back to local control. in some schools and states come if you have strong leadership at the district level to say we are not as concerned about the bottom line test results, particularly the standardized te
