michele: good evening. the questions continue and so does the investigation into the tragic attack on the u.s. compound in benghazi, libya. last september. four americans died in that attack. including ambassador chris stevens. since then, the events of that day and the u.s. government reaction to those events has come under scrutiny. this week, three state department employees, including two who were based in libya, testified that there were security lapses and conflicting information on the origins of the attack. particularly the talking points used by u.n. ambassador susan rice. while appearing on a series of television shows, the sunday after the attack, ambassador rice said the assault on the compound grew out of demonstrations over an anti-islam video. >> she blamed this attack on a video. in fact, she did it five different times. what was your reaction to that? >> i was stunned. my jaw dropped. and i was embarrassed. >> you were the highest ranking official in libya at the time, correct? >> yes, sir.

michelle knight was 21. >> michelle told my niece that she was going to use the pay phone and that shed come back to my sister's house, which she didn't. that was the last time michelle was seen. >> reporter: that day, michelle was offered a ride home from ariel castro. but instead, he took her to his home. for 11 years, she was held captive in his house, trapped like a caged animal, beaten, raped and mentally abused. it seems the longer michelle was missing, the more invisible she became. when you say the name amanda or gina in this neighborhood, everybody knows who you're talking about. but nobody knows the name michelle. nobody knows who she was. why is that? >> it's like we forgot about michelle. it's like did she ever come back home or whatever happened to michelle. after that kind of stuff dies down, you don't think about it anymore. nobody ever wondered about michelle knight anymore. we just figured she just went on about her life. >> reporter: people here forgot about michelle in part because the cleveland police removed her name from the fbi's missing persons database. just 15

it is easy to not just dismiss michele bachmann, but to enjoy michele bachmann as the sort of living, breathing embodiment of the crazy in american politics. it is almost a national pastime to watch michele bachmann do her thing. that's what news wee"newsweek" getting at with the infamous crazy-eyed cover story that they did on michele bachmann during the campaign. but i always feel like it's always worth keeping in mind these words from matt taibbi's "rolling stone" profile on bachmann when she was at the height of her presidential prospects. quote, you will want to laugh, but don't, because the secret of michele bachmann's success is that every time you laugh at her, she gets stronger. matt taibbi was making that argument in the context of her run for president last year. remember, she won the iowa straw poll. michele bachmann forced tim pawlenty out of the republican presidential race, by winning that straw poll and him not getting anywhere in it. she did great at the first republican major debate. for a while, it was not inconceivable that she might do well in the long run nar rep

the grandmother of michelle knight went to the home of gina dejesus hoping to find michelle knight yesterday, she arrived in a van full of balloons but found out michelle wasn't there. susan candiotti spoke with the grandmother and here is what the grandmother had to say. >> she has be . >> there are indications michelle did have a strained relationship with her family before she disappeared. there was some family tumult about custody of her child and it's a little bit complicated and we're trying to get the answers and trying to find out why authorities are not telling police where she is. >> that sort of does make a little bit of sense. we don't know the answer for why she hasn't made contact with her family exactly but perhaps that sheds some light on it. the other thing is that michelle knight was on the fbi missing person's list. what's going on there? >> we checked the missing person's database, it says recovered for amanda berry and nothing for michelle knight. her case remained open with cleveland police. according to the missing persons report police tried contacting her family 12 t

michelle knight's brother saying we want to know more about this. we want to see the missing persons report. >>> in west, texas, in other news we're following, that investigation into the fertilizer plant explosion has taken a bit of a different turn. investigators say they're now launching a criminal probe into last month's fire and blast that left 14 people dead. they've made an arrest of one of the first responders to the tragedy for having materials used to make a pipe bomb. it's far from clear whether there is a link between the two. cnn's david mattingly is in west, texas, for us. david, do we know anything about this arrest? what can you tell us? >> one of the people involved with the emergency medical services at the time, responding to the explosion that rocked west, texas, several weeks ago. what we're being told, according to what happened in federal court on friday, he was arrested for possession of materials to make a bomb. authorities were tipped off to this by a resident of the area who was described as having unwittingly taken posses

>> reporter: that's exactly right, michelle.f those suspects is one of three now in custody with san jose police. we do know the names of all three suspects and the charges they will be facing. they were caught thanks to a san jose police officer with a good memory. here's how it all unfolded. at around 2:00 this morning, police got a call of a robbery at a 7-eleven at kirk and foxworthy. the suspect was described as an armed woman with a long barreled revolver. police say she took a small amount of cash and lottery tickets before getting away. as officers were trying to catch up with her, one officer in particular remembered the same exact description from two other robberies that happened in san jose almost a month ago. >> when the officer tried to turn around and actually make contact with that suspect vehicle, he realized that the driver matched a description of the armed robbery that occurred about an hour and a half ago. when he got behind the vehicle, the vehicle decided to flee at which point we pursued the vehicle south

i'm michelle griego. frank has the morning off. time now is 5:00. >>> marin county commuters to san francisco could be in for a bumpy slow ride this morning. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is at the golden gate bridge with an update on this very messy pavement problem. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and i have good news on both fronts. it should be a smoother ride hopefully no hazards flying at your windshield, and the traffic should be basically back to normal. definitely different than what we saw during yesterday's morning commute. the problem over the last 24 hours was some paving work that was done overnight monday. the asphalted unraveled because of the way it was set. it was papered so it would be a smoother drive. but that plan backfired. the asphalt began to break up and sent pieces of rock everywhere during yesterday's morning commute. >> the golden gate bridge we had to nice smooth paper but the paper didn't hold up. >> reporter: so then yesterday afternoon bridge officials partially shut down the freeway for a s

i'm michelle griego. frank is off. a busy start to the fire season in the bay a w >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald. >>> good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. frank is off. >>> a busy start to the fire season in the bay area. the yellow fire is burning now in sonoma county. so far, more than 125 acres have burned. the fire is 60% contained. fire crews hope to get it fully under control at some point today. a total of three fires flared up in the north bay yesterday. those along with large controlled burns have had an impact on the air quality out there, and you can see hazy skies blanketing much of the bay area. there are a number of fast- moving wildfires raging across the state including a few in southern california. cbs reporter teresa garcia joins us live from ventura county with more on this firefight. teresa. >> reporter: michelle, good day to you. you know, you're dealing with wind whipped fires up there as well as down here. the santa ana winds are furnishing forward. we are at the springs fire.

>> reporter: that's exactly right, michelle.as one of the people who was in the car with the robbery suspects who are now just learning as identified as sherry gonzalez. this is information that we are just getting right now. we are at the intersection of silver creek and yerba buena road where that high-speed chase ended with a car driving up into this tree right over here and san jose police say it was thanks to a vigilant officer that three suspects are now in custody. here's how it unfolded. at around 2:00 this morning, police got a call of a robbery at a 7-eleven at kirk and foxworthy. the suspect was described as an armed woman with a long barreled revolver. police say she took a small amount of cash and lottery tickets before getting away. as officers were trying to catch up with her, one officer in particular remembered the same exact description from two other robberies that happened in san jose almost a month ago. in those robberies, the suspect dumped their getaway car at an apartment complex near where we're standing
